Johnson Navigator output 3
Just finishing up restoration of a Navigator, and measured the maximum achievable output into a 50 ohm dummy load on each band. This was with a new 6146 and other tubes testing well above "good" on the tester. Here's what I saw: 160M - 28W 80M - 26W 40M - 25W 20M - 23W 15M - 18W 10M - 13W I've found comments by others who mentioned 25W output was normal, but no one ever commented about the output on the higher bands. For anyone with Navigator experience, is the output level I'm seeing on the higher bands what I should expect to see? One fellow told me the Navigator had the same RF stage layout as the Ranger and that I should see the same output level as the Ranger. That, of course, is far from true and there are major differences between the two. Drive on the higher bands is much lower than the lower bands, around 1 ma. of grid current on 10 meters. Any comments or advice? 73, Floyd - K8AC

For Sale: Johnson Viking Valiant 1
For Sale: Johnson Viking Valiant 1 This radio is in good overall shape and appears to be complete. It is untested. Condition is commensurate with age with some ¡°patina¡±, especially on the rear panel. All knobs move easily. It has been in dry storage for 10+ years. There appears to be extra jack on the front panel placed there by the prior owner (probably for a mic). It does not take away from the look of the radio. Additionally, there appears to be one 6-pin tube missing, and another was replaced by what appears to be an R/C network. Because of the above, the radio is being sold for ¡°parts-only¡±, although I believe that it would be a very good base for a high-fidelity AM transmitter. I'd like to see this go to a good home. No reasonable offer will be refused. Unreasonable offers will be considered. ; - ) Pick-up or meet-up in Metrowest Boston (495/Rt-20 area) If not sold before, it will be at NEARfest* on Friday and Saturday MAY 2&3 (assuming weather) https://near-fest.com/ 73, Gene K1NR * NEARfest is the largest ham radio flea market in the North East

Johnson Ball Drives, Ball issues 7
Applicability: Any Johnson Transmitter using the Johnson Ball Drive Assembly 1) Johnson Ball Drive assembly uses 3/16" ball bearings (3) 2) We have found cases of the balls showing a "flat spot"/galling resulting in a "glitch or hesitation" in the ball drive input shaft rotation 3) This "flat spot"/galling results from over-tightning of the outer tensioning nut which crushes the wavy-washer, resulting in the balls in the assembly being "dragged rather than rotating" in the input shaft concave drive recess. 1) Disassemble ball drive mechanism 2) Clean thoroughly 3) Replace the three balls ( McMaster Carr has these: 3/16" stainless balls) 4) Polish the input shaft concave ball drive recess ( We chuck the ball carrier assembly in a drill motor, polish the concave drive recess with 1000 grit wet or dry) rinse and dry. 5) Carefully re-tension ( bend) wavy washer. If wavy washer is missing, McMaster Carr has a suitable replacement. 6) Re-assembly ball drive assembly, don't be stingy with lubricant ( we use lubriplate) 7) If your Ranger does not use a "floating snubber", and the ball drive uses the front panel as a support structure, tighten the "tensioning nut" only enough so the dial pointer rotation is smooth and does not "skip" . Custom replacement meter 12
While restoring a recently acquired Johnson Navigator transmitter, I was surprised at the very low quality of the stock meter. It was completely undamped and of questionable accuracy. I picked up a replacement 0-10ma meter on Amazon for just $6.47 and made a new face for it with the Meter program by Tonne Software. I've used these meters in other homebrew projects and found them to be of considerably higher quality than the original Johnson meter. Here's how the completed meter face looks: I printed the meter face on an inkjet printer using matte finish photo paper. I removed the original meter face and glued the new face to the original scale plate and then replace the plate. The Tonne Meter program allows you to design the scale, graphics and text and you can even make a meter face with multiple scales. 73, Floyd - K8AC

Navigator 2
Anyone interested in a Navigator? I sought one for years thinking it would make a nice station paired with the Icom R70 I had at the time. Finally I bought one from "Vintage Radios" of Paris, TX in 2001. He had put a nice front panel on it. The meter was non-original of course. I put the station together and to my dismay I found that the Navigator chirped so bad it was unusable. I messed with it in depth and finally decided I would have to either run it crystal - controlled or come up with an external stable VFO. Back into its shipping carton it went and has been there ~20 years. ( I've heard here recently that there is a fix but I never tried it.) The time has come for us to relocate to more age-appropriate quarters, and so the Navigator looks for a new home. 73 Richard Kirkpatrick N1AA Portsmouth, NH

Mystery Wire in Valiant Wiring Harness 9
Hi Folks, I could use your help! I'm in the process of re-kitting a Valiant I transmitter using the Valiant Assembly Manual. The Valiant wiring harness schematic in the Valiant Operating Manual shows blue wire 71 entering the harness at breakout K and coming out at breakout Q. Breakout K is between the modulator tube sockets (XV16 & XV17), and breakout Q is at the RF output SO-239. I have looked over all the steps in the assembly manual multiple times, and I can't find any references to 71A or 71B. Could you check your resources and tell me if you see any references to this wire? Considering that it is the last numbered wire in the harness, I wonder if it was put there for some purpose, and then never used, or maybe it was originally used for some purpose which was then deleted. I'm really puzzled! Like I said, I've been through every assembly step in the book, and there are NO references to wire 71! Thanks for your help! Mike, WB0LDJ mharmon at att dot net

FS: Viking 500
FS: Viking 500 Beautiful Condition. $3500 OBO local pickup in Westchester County, NY My loss is your gain¡ time to downsize. It was completely restored about 10 years ago, including a beautiful refinish of both the RF and power supply cabinets. Was fully operational until a few years ago when I moved the shack from CT to NY but has always been stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled family room/shack. Includes custom caster wheel dolly for power supply, all inter-connecting cables and manual. Also includes, heavy duty, custom Logo covers for both RF and PS cabinets. Only known issue is the mode switch gets frozen in the AM position. I have not powered this up in the past 2 years and it should be brought back to life slowly with a new alignment. Some pictures attached. Jerry NY2KW

Johnson knob pointer source 3
I recently purchased some Deutsch Sealing Plugs from Newark.com to use as pointers that were missing from knobs on my Ranger and Navigator transmitters. I see that the plugs are now available from Amazon at a price of $6.12 for 10. If you have Prime, shipping is free so the plugs cost you less than the shipping charge from Newark. These plugs are a press fit into the holes in the knobs. I cut them to length, file or sand off the rough edge from cutting and then press the cut end into the hole. The end of the plugs come rounded off nicely and look good as the exposed pointer end. 73, K8AC

6N2 with a Viking 2 supply/modulator
I¡¯m about to begin modifying my Viking 2 for operation with the 6N2. The modifications on the Viking 2 seem straight forward with the exception of two things. Thing 1: changing out the VFO socket on the Viking 2 to a 9 pin socket and ¡°socket support shell¡±. I¡¯m not following what a ¡°socket support shell¡± is unless it¡¯s the mounting bracket for the socket that connects it to the chassis. I¡¯m unable to find a 9 pin socket so I planned to simply use the existing ceramic 8 pin socket. Pin 9 on the 6N2 is a ground and there appears to be several unused pins on both the V2 and the 6N2. I¡¯ll just use pin 8 for a ground and replace the existing 6N2 9 pin male connector to a 8 pin male. I¡¯ve got plenty of 8 pin male and female connectors and shields. Thing 2: I don¡¯t see anywhere in the 6N2 manual providing these instructions to modify the Viking 1 and 2 or the Ranger that the modifications will allow normal operations of this equipment after they are modified to work with the 6N2. If it¡¯s necessary to reverse these modifications to operate my gear on HF, I may look for another way to supply and modulate my 6N2. I¡¯ll put a sticker on the Viking 2 VFO socket stating that plugging a 122 VFO into this socket might not be a real good idea. Thanks, Tom N5AMA

6N2 with a Clegg Thor modulator/supply 4
Does anyone have any experience mating a 6N2 with the Clegg Thor supply/modulator? I¡¯m trying to put a 6N2 on 6m AM for some local rag chewing and really not interested in modifying either of my Viking 1 or 2 transmitters to work with the 6N2. I think I should be able to cobble up a cable between the two if it makes sense. I would go with the Thor transmitter and supply but can¡¯t locate a Thor transmitter. Any help appreciated. Tom N5AMA

New Member 5
I just found this group and subscribed so I thought I would say hello. EF Johnson gear has always appealed to me and I have fond memories of the Viking II I used as a Novice in 1970. I didn't own another EFJ transmitter until very recently when a friend and former colleague gave me a Viking Challenger that had been stored in his basement for the last 50 years. Bringing the Challenger back to life has presented some challenges (pun intended I guess). After new PS capacitors, power cord and internal fuse it acted like it wanted to go but after a few minutes of operation the 15 ohm meter shunt went up in smoke. I think I have found the root cause for that and have it under control but I need to do more work on it. My Challenger came with some mods. Someone replaced the 6DQ6A finals with 6146s. It has a 6AU6 and some mods in the oscillator circuit. It has (had) the PTT mod. I removed the PTT mod in the process of trouble shooting the run away plate current problem. Not sure if I will restore the PTT mod or not as I mainly want this transmitter to be a Novice rig. Anyway, I'm glad I found this group and I look forward to reading and taking part in the discussions. 73 - Jerry - W0PWE

Feelin' Like a Dunce 12
It is one of those "I should know this but ..." questions. For the Johnson 250-39 TR switch, Table I presents the resistance at pins 2 and 5 of the 6BL7 as 100K ohms. For the life of me, looking at the schematic I don't see how that could be. Assuming the DC resistance of the RF chokes and toroid to be negligible, where would 100K be coming from? My VOM readings basically show open circuit. Thanks, Jeff (callsign hidden out of embarrassment)
