I just found this group and subscribed so I thought I would say hello. EF Johnson gear has always appealed to me and I have fond memories of the Viking II I used as a Novice in 1970. I didn't own another EFJ transmitter until very recently when a friend and former colleague gave me a Viking Challenger that had been stored in his basement for the last 50 years.?
?
Bringing the Challenger back to life has presented some challenges (pun intended I guess). After new PS capacitors, power cord and internal fuse it acted like it wanted to go but after a few minutes of operation the 15 ohm meter shunt went up in smoke. I think I have found the root cause for that and have it under control but I need to do more work on it.?
?
My Challenger came with some mods. Someone replaced the 6DQ6A finals with 6146s. It has a 6AU6 and some mods in the oscillator circuit. It has (had) the PTT mod. I removed the PTT mod in the process of trouble shooting the run away plate current problem. Not sure if I will restore the PTT mod or not as I mainly want this transmitter to be a Novice rig.?
?
Anyway, I'm glad I found this group and I look forward to reading and taking part in the discussions.

Welcome, Jerry !

You’ll find helpful, friendly folks here.

Among the rigs in my radio-overpopulated-shack are a Valiant and a Navigator along with a couple of Messengers converted to 10 meters.

Thanks for joining us!

Hello Jerry,
You won’t normally see a bunch of traffic here. ?If someone has an issue, people seem to appear ‘out of the mist’.?
Back about COVID time, it seemed like I somehow wound up with a bunch of Johnson stuff. ?It gave me plenty to work on.?
I believe I have the following stuff.?
6- Viking II’s. Two are Civil Defense models?
At least 6 VFO’s
Two Valiants
Two Rangers
Two Thunderbolt amps
Two vacuum tube T/R switches
So, I’ve got a bunch. Never wanted a desk KW, nor the 500.?
Johnson made some solid transmitters back in the day.?

Welcome to the group.?

Well since we've got no pressing technical issues,? here's something that might be of interest to new and old members alike.

The EF Johnson Company was growing rapidly in the late 1950s and had run out of both administrative and factory space.?? This photo was taken at the ribbon cutting for the 113,000 sq. ft. new building on July 2 1961,? which was designed in 1959 to handle double the sales volume at that time.?? However by the time of the ribbon-cutting,? Edgar was quoted as saying "Sales have increased so rapidly we are approaching that point now."? Further expansions were made in subsequent years.

Pictured are Minnesota Governor Elmer Anderson and the Johnson brothers - Edgar,? Marvin, and Everette:

It's nice to hear about your Johnson gear. And I really like the picture. When I was a teenager growing up in NE Iowa we made a few trips to the FCC office in St. Paul for exams and also to Canada for fishing. We often stopped in Waseca on those trips to visit Herters - an awesome fishing and outdoors gear supplier. Herters was just across the street from EF Johnson and I remember looking over and dreaming about what might be going on in that building. I did tour their plant in 1974 but it was mostly CB radio production at that point.?
