WTB: Invader 2000 close to Austin TX
Hi all My deal for a good Invader 2000 fell through -- in case you're wondering, both the buyer and the seller are delighted, and that particular radio now has another fun story in its provenance -- so once again I'm looking for a good Invader 2000 that works and isn't all beat up. If you can deliver it to my QTH in north Austin, I'll pay gasoline and will buy you dinner at one of Austin's more well-known eateries. Reply in PM, please. Thanks and 73 Jim N6OTQ

Viking II Question(s) 6
I've been thinking about setting up an AM station for the low bands. My friend Matt has told me that he really likes his Viking II, but my only problem is that it's so big and heavy! I realize that with AM, the old boatanchors probably will out-talk the newer (smaller) gear, especially small transmillers like the Heathkit DX-60 and the Ranger I/II. I've never owner a Viking II, but I've heard good things about them. I'm curious about the special "CDC" model. Can a regular Viking II be easily upgraded to the CDC model? Does anyone have a better recommendation for 160, 80 and 40M AM operation? BTW, I already have a Collins R-388 (51J-3) that I'm thinking about using with whatever transmitter I get. Any words of advice? Mike Harmon, WB0LDJ mharmon at att dot net

Looking for clean schematic for Viking Mobile Transmitter
I am having trouble using my copy of the VM transmitter schematic. I have a scanned copy of the manual and the schematic image from BAMA. I tried cleaning up my copy in Photoshop with minimal results. Does anyone have a cleaner copy than what is in the scanned manual. I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Bob, KN4HH

Viking mobile transmitter gang tuning capacitor chain locked up 8
Good day, all. My VM transmitter has been working well until today. I tried to adjust grid current using the Gang Tuning control. I turned the knob about half way and the control locked up. I could not turn the control in either direction. I loosened the shaft coupler between the front and middle tuning capacitor and the front capacitor turns freely. The middle tuning capacitor would not budge. I loosened the shaft coupler between the middle and rear capacitor and the rear capacitor moves freely. I am afraid to apply too much force to the middle capacitor shaft. Has anyone run into this problem and any recommendations on freeing up the capacitor. When the problem is solved, I will need to re-align the position of each tuning capacitor. As best I recall, all sections were at approximately the same location ( all fully meshed). Thanks for any comments. 73, Bob, KN4HH

Johnson Invader 2000
I¡¯m ready to sell my Invader 2000. I¡¯m having to move things around the shop for a better fit. This isn¡¯t a fire sale as some of the footprint of this rig is the supply which fits under the bench. I¡¯m asking $1500 for it and that would be without shipping. If you know this rig, you know shipping isn¡¯t gonna happen for two reasons. First reason is its weight and the second is this rigs cosmetic condition. It works and has a manual. Pictures are available on this site posted September 8. Please email me if interested. Tom N5AMA

Viking II Kit Manual 4
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had a PDF copy of the Viking II assembly manual? I am specifically interested in the sections related to how the two pulley knobs are strung. The strings on both are broken on mine and I am unsure how to correctly redo it.

Hello to the Group 9
Hello! I retired from Lockheed when the Pandemic hit. I've been collecting BA's and old test equip for decades. I currently have a Johnson Viking II CDC on the air, mostly on 75 and 40 meter phone, paired with a National NC-303. I use a KW matchbox with a mod for 160 meters to tune a 160m half-wave inverted vee for 160-6 meters. I have a Ranger and a Viking Valiant that are undergoing some restoration, a Johnson Mobile transmitter (and Johnson mobile VFO but no PS) and a Challenger which I've collected but I haven't done much with yet. My long term plans are to keep the Viking II CDC and the Ranger but if anyone is interested in making an offer for any of the other rigs let me know and we can work something out, especially if you can visit the Southeastern Pennsylvania area (Pottstown/Phoenixville). I have way too much stuff! 73 KN3i John

For Sale Johnson Thunderbolt and Pacemaker
I have for sale a Johnson Thunderbolt and Pacemaker. I don't think they have ever been turned on. They are just way too heavy for me to manipulate. The Faceplates are extremely good, and no rust or corrosion of any kind inside. They are too heavy to ship obviously. $800 for both. They are located near LAX.

Hello from Mike Langner, K5MGR, new to this group
Hello everyone ! I'm just now new to this group -- I'm in "active retirement" from broadcasting. Now I repair and restore "great old radios" from the glory days of ham radio. Sitting across from me are a Viking Navigator and a Viking Valiant, both completely restored. Next to them is a pair of Johnson Messengers awaiting conversion to 10 meter AM. They join a number of shelves of other brands of the great old boatanchors I'd have given my eye teeth for in my youth! 73 all! Mike/ K5MGR

Programming 5300 Series - VHF High Power 3
Hello All, I hope that you are well. I am attempting to program a 5300 Series - VHF High Power Radio. I am using PC Configure 2_18_16. I can read the radio and see all the settings, but can't write to the radio. When the radio is powered up it displays V 3.18.21 then V 1.23.0 So, should I, can I, is it possible to upgrade the firmware to work with PC Configure 2_18_16? Or Do I need to use a different version of PC Configure? Maybe PC Configure 1.3. Any help and assistance would be appreciated. Thank you. All The Best & 73's (too) Charlie - N6JOA

WTB -- Invader 2000 at Dayton
On another group there's a Dayton list started. Is there a buyer here who can take a credit card or is willing to do PayPal F&F and can arrange shipping to central Texas (78758)? I want a Johnson Invader 2000. Not the plain old QRP Invader, but the Invader 2000. I want the QRO Invader. I need it to be cosmetically nice, but it doesn't need to be perfect. I prefer that the exciter be working. The finals can be illin' because I'm comfortable fixing / rebuilding that part. What I'm willing to pay depends on what's non-functional, and whether the chrome-plated power supply is intact-- or whether the power supply is there at all. I don't want to do a 100% concours, Colins 10 of 10 restoration of restoration-capable, because functionally, the part that matters is the part that people see when they look at the operating console and hear when I'm on the air. This is cross-posted to the repeaters and boatanchor lists. Thanks and 73 Jim N6OTQ

Johnson Viking Valiant 2 - voltages 5
Hi all. I'm working on getting this JV2 back to factory. Not a restoration just functioning. And I'm a rookie so its quite the learning curve. I have a lot of chaos with the voltages on this unit and one item I am stumped on is the R57 shunt > picture + schematic attached. Why would the voltage be the same on both sides? Unless then repealed Ohms law I should have a lower voltage on one end? Its a 5.1 Ohm that measures about 6.1 and I get 3mV across it power on. DC Voltage is -67 on both sides with T2 or T1&T2 on. What am I missing? Can I replace it with a 5 Ohm 2 Watt and be fine ?

EFJ 242-9673 3
Greetings from Utah... I have several EFJ portables, 242-5597, that I use in the ham 900MHz band and I found this mobile that looks a lot like a 5300 ... but no joy programming it. I have searched all over for any info and have come up dry. It's labeled as a Viking, powers on, has the same power and accessory connectors as a VHF 5300 mobile. I have tried every version of pcconfig that I have and no joy at all. It powers up and transmits and the FCC data shows it as an 18-watt 900 MHz commercial radio. Based on the reliability and stability of the Ascend portables, I was hoping this one would work. Anyone have any thoughts, advice, or pointers I can try? Thanks in advance. Jerry, W7SAR

P25 radios 4
1yr 3mo new 59yr old ham seeking info on p25 vhf and uhf rigs. Cost associated with rigs and software packages. Of the Ham clubs associated near me one uses uhf encrypted one uses vhf and one uses vhf trunked. Why do they all use different rig setups? Where they can control who's in and who's out?
