Viking II Question(s)
I've been thinking about setting up an AM station for the low bands.? My friend Matt has told me that he really likes his Viking II, but my only problem is that it's so big and heavy!
I realize that with AM, the old boatanchors probably will out-talk the newer (smaller) gear, especially small transmillers like the Heathkit DX-60 and the Ranger I/II. I've never owner a Viking II, but I've heard good things about them.? I'm curious about the special "CDC" model.? Can a regular Viking II be easily upgraded to the CDC model? Does anyone have a better recommendation for 160, 80 and 40M AM operation?? BTW, I already have a Collins R-388 (51J-3) that I'm thinking about using with whatever transmitter I get. Any words of advice? Mike Harmon, WB0LDJ mharmon at att dot net |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Mike. II've had several AM stations over the last 57 years or so, but have not operated AM recently.? I think the nature of AM has changed over the years. It just doesn't seem to be as "gentlemanly" as it used to be when I ran my Heathkit DX-60A and Lafayette HA-350 combo.? But that said, I do have a Ranger II that I am thinking of pairing with my National NC 300. Both require some work before I can put them on the air though.? I'll probably add a little bit more oomph to my signal with my homebrew linear.? I know that's not a great thing to do from a purist AM standpoint, but right now it's seeming likely.? Have fun! ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe DX-60 with the controlled carrier, is ideal for driving a (quality) linear amp . Simple audio mod (two disc caps) result in terrific sounding AM. My Dixey 60 drives a Gonset GSB-201 with 100w resting carrier and 600W on voice peaks.? ?AM Rally is this weekend, light the filaments ! Bill KE7KK |
If you do a google search for Viking II CDC model, there? are a bunch?of references.? I had not heard?of the CDC model until you mentioned it.? Apparently it just fills in more non-ham frequencies than the standard?Viking II covers. Other alternatives?? BC-610?? Collins KW broadcast transmitters?? If you really?want THE SIGNAL, I also know where there?is an operational 500,000 watt AM transmitter (GE/RCA/Westinghouse)... Ken WA8JXM |
