Johnson/Transcrypt 5000/Stealth 25 firmware and programming. 2
I have a VHF 5000 that has had its EEPROM wiped with no firmware installed at all. I need to find a way to load firmware onto this radio to get it to work again. Also, speaking of firmware, I was told the 5000/Stealth 25 has an Easter egg of the Nebraska Cornhuskers fight song if you press a certain button code. Is this true? What is the code? Thanks.

Viking II / SX-71 Restoration
I have been working on two projects. I acquired a EF Johnson Viking II that was at some point used in a high school station. It had a bat handled switch mounted on the front panel upper right corner to lower the power down to 75 watts for a NOVICE operator at the school. The three power supply tubes were missing and one 6146 had a loose plate cap as well as with one of the 807 modulator tubes. All the internal parts for the most part were original. The cabinet paint was not in good shape either. That was the starting point for the transmitter. So far I have painted the lower cabinet panel with copper paint, and plugged the holes in the front panel and primed it. It's ready to have the top gray portion painted. (All the lettering has been masked with pin strip tape.) I plan to paint the top and bottom of the front panel with matched gray and maroon paint. Plus paint the cabinet with matched maroon paint. I had Sherwin-Williams match these three paints for me. I'll be using the PREVAL spray system to apply the paint. While doing the above, I have acquired all the resistors and capacitors needed to re-furbish the electronics. I did repair the two tubes with loose plate caps using muffler cement. The tubes that were in the transmitter test out good on my TV-7 tube tester. But, I have spares if needed. I'll also be applying lithium grease to the detente portion of the rotary switches and applying conductive grease to the roller inductor roller. I've already cleaned up the dust on the chassis and cleaned and lubricated the audio pot. Most likely will clean switch contacts with De-oxide cleaner too and oil the variable capacitor bearings. I've acquired the needed coax to replace the RF output and VFO input coax cables as the originals look to be in bad shape. The chassis cleaned up very nicely. I also picked up a couple new bat handle switches to replace the badly corroded originals. I most likely will repaint the five transformer bell housings once the restoration is complete. When finished, this transmitter should look very nice and work like new! Besides this, I have been restoring a Hallicrafters SX-71 to match and go along with the Viking II. When I was a 14 year old kid back in 1953 I think every other General Class license holder or above used a Viking II and SX 71. Or at least it seemed that way. They were a very very popular combination. So far I have replaced all but two resistors and all the paper and electrolytic caps in the receiver. I had to remove the front panel and re-string the main slide rule dial too. That is where I am with it right now. I don't trust the silver mica caps in the IF transformers, so I think replacing the caps after removing the IF cans will be my next step. Then a re-alignment. I'll also replace the line cords with three wire ones and will be using a 2000 watt variac to run these units on 115 volt mains. (My line voltage here is close to 125 volts.) In the mean time, I'll be looking for a Johnson 122 VFO for the Viking II. When finished, I should have a very nice working 70 year old station. I'm really looking forward to using this station set up. If anyone has a reasonably priced Johnson 122 VFO with nice front panel let me know. I'd be interested in it. Some time ago I refurbished a Johnson TR switch, so it should go nicely with the pair too. It's a lot of work, but enjoyable. I'm just slowly doing one thing at a time. Eventually I'll be done and can enjoy using the pair. Lee, w0vt/w5drc w5drc@...

Oil filled filter caps, Viking II
Hello Our $ 0.02 worth: What WE did, in our Viking rebuilds,( Not a repair) was to make all those old caps vanish. Period. Along with just about every other resistor and capacitor. ( Except TEMPCO units). Thank You Kiss-Electronics Ms Ashley Hall 183 N 5th PL. Just wanted to 'close the loop' on this from an Archive point of view.. and not leave some perceived Fake News or Disinformation on the topic. Mine had a wee bit of stuff around the seam but once I wiped it off it has not returned after about 9 months of sitting and waiting for Cap surgery. tnx Brian VE3HI

Hello 7
I just jointed this group. Hope it grows. I'm an older ham and have been in the hobby since 1953. Over the years I have collected a lot of ham gear and own a fair amount of EF Johnson gear including a Desk KW, Valiant, Ranger, Viking 2, viking 1, 6N2, etc. Right now I am just getting started refurbishing a Viking 2. I'm always restoring something. EF Jonson made some nice gear. When I first got into the hobby, I think just about every other ham had a Viking 2 and a SX-71 Hallicrafters receiver. Or at least it seemed that way. Those two pieces of gear were extremely popular and make up a very nostalgic station. Lee Bahr w0vt/w5drc

Panel Hole repair
Hello RE: unwanted holes drilled in equipment panels. 1) Find someone who will weld a filler piece into the hole 2) What WE do: Clean up the hole ( file edges, remove sharp bits, countersink slightly the front of the hole Clean paint from around the cleaned up hole to a distance of 1/8" or so Carefully clean bare metal with acetone Get out the JB Weld Cut a small thin piece of metal, ( we use brass) slightly larger than the hole) clean and acetone this piece Use this thin piece as a "backer" to cover the hole Schmear the JB into the hole, using the "backer" piece to keep the JB in place Round up the JB proud of the front of the panel Let cure for a few days Mask off around the hole( so you don't disturb the paint Very sharp chisel, pare the JB as close to the panel surface as possible Sand until you cannot feel the patch Prime , touch up . This patch will be invisible. Thank You Thank You Kiss-Electronics Ms Ashley Hall 183 N 5th PL. My only EF Johnson radio at the moment is a Ranger I plan to restore. I wished now that I had bought a Viking at a hamfest in NW Ohio a month or so ago. It was said to be in working condition. My problem was it was big and I'd have no place in the house to store it or set it up. The other problem was how heavy it was and I didn't feel like trying to carry it all the way back to my car. I think it was under $100. On November 4, 2021 5:11:32 AM "Lee Bahr" <leebahr@...> wrote: I just jointed this group. Hope it grows. I'm an older ham and have been in the hobby since 1953. Viking 2 Front Panel
Bye chance does anyone on here have a nice looking Viking 2 front panel without holes drilled in it I could purchase from you ? I'm restoring a fairly nice Viking 2 but someone has drilled holes in the front panel. It would be nice to replace it with something much nicer. I just gathered most of the needed parts to start the restoration. Plan to replace all the carbon resistors, electrolytic capacitors and paper capacitors, plus anything else that shows up needing replacement. Lee, w0vt w5drc@...

Unidentified Johnson Power Transformers
Hello We are cleaning out the far corners of our shop and we found one (1)) large Johnson Power transformer, Johnson Part Number: 22.1211, 138713,25919. It has 12 output wires, so we presume it is a power transformer of some sort. Dimensions: ( between mounting ears centers: 3 3/4 X 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" tall. We have not checked this beast for winding continuity but if you know what it is and are interested, we would test for continuity and you can have it for postage to the lower 48. Shipping is probably going to be Fed Ex, WELL padded and Fed Ex shipping these days is about $1.75 per pound . Thank You Kiss Electronics Ms Ashley Hall Owner W7DUZ www.kiss-electronics.com

Johnson KW Matchbox 2
I have the guts of a Johnson KW Matchbox. Here is the schematic, https://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/images/kwmatchbox.jpg Now it is all there except the bandswitch. I use it on 80 meters all the time with an open line feeder dipole. It looks like all the band switch did was short portions of the coil together. Anyone have an idea as to how I could accomplish the same thing? It would be even neater if one could use every turn of the coil instead of just 5 taps. Having another homebrew tuner with a roller inductor, makes one spoiled. having infinite inductance steps. Any thoughts? Joe WB9SBD

Legacy EF Johnson 5318 alignment?
I acquired an EF Johnson 5318 which is a very old radio in that when it powers up it only displays 1 version number (3.x.x something) and can only be programmed with PC Configure 1.28.08 using 9600 baud. The file version on it is 5.5, I believe. I am using a remote head, not a HHC. Is there an older method or version of PC Tune than version 2.2.3 that will work on this radio? Otherwise, the radio works fine in that it transmits and receives in analog and P25.

EF Johnson 242-9890 900mhz mobile radio 5
What software is used to program the 242-9890-403? I have the programming cable, I'm just having trouble finding the correct software... I have PCConfigure 1.28.0.8, but it does not list the 9890... Best Regards Jeremy N2UGS

Other EF Johnson Products? 2
I hope this board is open to equipment other than radios. For instance, EF Johnson's line of antenna couplers such as the 250 W or I KW "Match Boxes" Other than not tuning some of the newer bands and being several times larger (Physically) than the rigs these days, they are still functional and even the lower power unit can easily handle a KW of SSB. The older rigs ran AM modulation and the amount of instantaneous output power was quite substantial 73, Wayne W6IZK

I found the EF Johnson mailing list
you can sign up for it here: https://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/johnson It also has very few messages, going a month or two between messages, but it's a resource. Well, as noted there are basically no messages...yet. Hopefully there will be some people who wander in. I am here in large part due to my interest in watching Terry's videos at D Labs Electronics (YouTube and his YT page video archive). Interesting stuff Terry has done on the Rangers and Valiants and Viking II rigs, amongst other stuff. Anyhow, hope to see some exchanges on this Group. Brian VE3HI

New ham groups added, new groups.io pricing structure on Jan 18, 2021 (long post, intentionally cross-posted)
First, the new pricing structure for NEWLY formed groups on groups.io beginning January 18, 2021. Basic (free) groups formed on or after that date stay free *up to 100 members*. After that, it will need to be upgraded to a premium group. Premium groups ($220/year) are good up to 400 members, after which a per-member fee ($.05 per month or $0.55 per year) is added to the $220 per year premium group fee. That will bring a burden on some new groups, so I created some more ham groups that may grow, or flounder, but I wanted to beat the deadline so those groups will not be charged extra fees, or any fees, for that matter. If they take off and are useful, that will be great. If they flounder, I might just delete the group if members agree, or if there are no co-owners by the time I review whether the group is worth keeping. If you were thinking of creating a group for one of your interests, THIS IS THE TIME TO DO SO before the new pricing structure goes into effect. If you need help with that, email me *privately* and if I'm not overwhelmed with requests, I will try to help. You must be willing to assume group ownership as I will leave the group after creating it and you've been made a group owner. If you need help getting started with the group, I can hang around for a short while and direct you to documentation on how to run a group. As for the new groups I created last evening, I will list their web addresses below. Please contact me *privately* ONLY IF you are interested in joining one of these groups AND ARE UNABLE to use the join button on the web site or find the join process confusing. I would like to avoid what happened when Yahoo closed their groups and I offered to help people if they were unable to join themselves. I was overwhelmed with requests to help, and I'm sure not all of those were from people who had difficulty joining, so please give it a try yourself first. Go to the site and press the join button on the group(s) you are interested in. Follow the simple instructions and you will be approved. All new members will be moderated for a short time so don't expect to post immediately. There's only one moderator right now (me), and I work for a living, sleep at night, and take naps because of my health condition in late afternoons sometimes. I donate some of my time for community work, am a minister, and have to wisely use my time. But I don't want anyone to not join one of these groups because they find it difficult to join. YOU CAN JOIN ANY OF THESE GROUPS BY EMAIL by sending a message to the subscribe address. Take the web address name at the end of the URL and change it by adding [email protected] to it. For the FT-757 group (as an example): /g/FT-757GX Send an email to this address: [email protected] no body text is required in the message, just the address, but to make your email program happy, you can put the word subscribe in the subject and message fields. These new lists are email reflectors only with no storage (a change that was made almost a year ago by GIO's owner). If I had created them before February 2020, they would have storage. We will work something out for storage if the groups get large enough and have a need for that. I will need moderators for these new groups, and soon after they get on their feet, a co-owner who has some real interest and hopefully experience with these different brands of radios. Contact me off-list if you are interested in volunteering with any of these groups. I will help you out with anything you need to know about how to manage a group as a moderator or co-owner. I will list the NEW groups first, then list the other amateur radio groups I created. Note that most of these are not model-specific and are "general-purpose" groups for a BRAND of radio or a general-purpose group for a type of equipment. I did not create any group for which there already was a general-purpose discussion group for that brand of radio, like Drake and some others. I am not interested in amassing a lot of groups to manage. My purpose is just to see that interes

New ham groups, also new pricing structure for groups
The next message is about some new groups I created to have a general-purpose discussion group for some brands of amateur radio equipment and radios before groups.io's new pricing structure goes into effect Jan 81, 2021. It is a long message, so I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I cross-posted it to all the groups I manage. I will be looking for moderators for the new groups and even some of the established groups, so if you're interested in helping, please email me privately about this. For the rest, please read my next post. It's a long and detailed one.
