Hello
I just jointed this group.? Hope it grows.? I'm an older ham and have been in the hobby since 1953.? Over the years I have collected a lot of ham gear and own a fair amount of EF Johnson gear including a Desk KW, Valiant, Ranger, Viking 2, viking 1, 6N2, etc.? Right now I am just getting started refurbishing a Viking 2.? I'm always restoring something.? EF Jonson made some nice gear.? When I first got into the hobby, I think just about every other ham had a Viking 2 and a SX-71 Hallicrafters receiver. ? Or at least it seemed that way.? Those two pieces of gear were extremely popular and make up a very nostalgic station.

Welcome to the group. My only EF Johnson radio at the moment is a Ranger I plan to restore. I wished now that I had bought a Viking at a hamfest in NW Ohio a month or so ago. It was said to be in working condition. My problem was it was big and I'd have no place in the house to store it or set it up. The other problem was how heavy it was and I didn't feel like trying to carry it all the way back to my car. I think it was under $100. On November 4, 2021 5:11:32 AM "Lee Bahr" <leebahr@...> wrote:

Similarly I have a Viking II on the way to being refurbished - caps and such.
I got it last winter but that was just about the time that the weather was opening up soon-ish, so once that happens I put indoor projects on the back burner. In any case, I intend to order the caps for it sometime in the next week to be ready to get at it. One thing of interest to me was the situation with the oil-filled bathtub capacitor. I asked around a bit and the general consensus was to leave it along, but there are others who are concerned that it does usually have a PCB oil and it is also corrosive if it starts to leak (after all these years). I just wanted to state that Terry Dayton at D Labs has put together a replacement board.. a video link is below. I don't know yet what? his price is or have any comments yay or nay on it. Once can do the same themselves with decent caps and balancing resistors I think (I've yet to fully digest the balancing resistors info such that I could do it). In the past I had collected a couple Viking II but they were moved on to local boatanchor guys when I figured I was not going to do AM, and had a multi year house renovation to be working on as my own labourer...HI. I will only be using my Viking II for CW at this time now. BTW, Terry does have a number of videos on the Viking II re. rigs he has worked on so they are likely a good idea to see.? Brian VE3HI |
Just curious, what's the AM power output of these Viking radios?? On November 4, 2021 11:17:08 AM "Brian Pepperdine" <busybrian@...> wrote:

I am not going to replace the oil filled capacitor in my Viking II I am now restoring.? It's not leaking and I doubt it will ever leak in my lifetime.? I want to keep the transmitter as original as possible.? Besides that, the PCBs don't concern me in the least.? Too little in there to worry about if a clean up would be ever required and I am not dealing with PCBs on a daily basis.? If I wanted to replace it, I'd make up my own board for pennies.

I won't change my oil filled cap either, I think the consensus is that they are OK as is.?
Just wanted to 'close the loop' on this from an Archive point of view.. and not leave some perceived Fake News or Disinformation on the topic. Mine had a wee bit of stuff around the seam but once I wiped it off it has not returned after about 9 months of sitting and waiting for Cap surgery. tnx Brian VE3HI |
