Panel Hole repair
Hello
??? RE: unwanted holes drilled in equipment panels.
1) Find someone who will weld a filler piece into the hole
2) What WE do:
???? Clean up the hole ( file edges, remove sharp bits, countersink slightly the front of the hole
???? Clean paint from around the cleaned up hole to a distance of 1/8" or so
???? Carefully clean bare metal with acetone
???? Get out the JB Weld
????? Cut a small thin piece of metal, ( we use brass) slightly larger than the hole) clean and acetone this piece
????? Use this thin piece as a "backer" to cover the hole
????? Schmear the JB into the hole, using the "backer" piece to keep the JB in place
?????? Round up the JB proud of the front of the panel
????? Let cure for a few days
????? Mask off around the hole( so you don't disturb the paint
????? Very sharp chisel, pare the JB as close to the panel surface as possible
?????? Sand until you cannot feel the patch
?????? Prime , touch up . This patch will be invisible.

My only EF Johnson radio at the moment is a Ranger I plan to restore. I wished now that I had bought a Viking at a hamfest in NW Ohio a month or so ago. It was said to be in working condition. My problem was it was big and I'd have no place in the house to store it or set it up. The other problem was how heavy it was and I didn't feel like trying to carry it all the way back to my car. I think it was under $100.

I just jointed this group.? Hope it grows.? I'm an older ham and have been in the hobby since 1953.? Over the years I have collected a lot of ham gear and own a fair amount of EF Johnson gear including a Desk KW, Valiant, Ranger, Viking 2, viking 1, 6N2, etc.? Right now I am just getting started refurbishing a Viking 2.? I'm always restoring something.? EF Jonson made some nice gear.? When I first got into the hobby, I think just about every other ham had a Viking 2 and a SX-71 Hallicrafters receiver. ? Or at least it seemed that way.? Those two pieces of gear were extremely popular and make up a very nostalgic station. |
