Viking mobile transmitter gang tuning capacitor chain locked up
Good day, all. ?My VM transmitter has been working well until today. ?I tried to adjust grid current using the Gang Tuning control. ?I turned the knob about half way and the control locked up. ?I could not turn the control in either direction. ?I loosened the shaft coupler between the front and middle tuning capacitor and the front capacitor turns freely. ?The middle tuning capacitor would not budge. ?I loosened the shaft coupler between the middle and rear capacitor and the rear capacitor moves freely. ?I am afraid to apply too much force to the middle capacitor shaft. ?Has anyone run into this problem and any recommendations on freeing up the capacitor. ?When the problem is solved, I will need to re-align the position of each tuning capacitor. ?As best I recall, all sections were at approximately the same location ( all fully meshed).
Thanks for any comments. 73, Bob, KN4HH? |
Johnson Invader 2000
I’m ready to sell my Invader 2000. I’m having to move things around the shop for a better fit. This isn’t a fire sale as some of the footprint of this rig is the supply which fits under the bench. I’m asking $1500 for it and that would be without shipping. If you know this rig, you know shipping isn’t gonna happen for two reasons. First reason is its weight and the second is this rigs cosmetic condition. It works and has a manual.
Pictures are available on this site posted September 8. Please email me if interested. Tom N5AMA |

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had a PDF copy of the Viking II assembly manual? I am specifically interested in the sections related to how the two pulley knobs are strung. The strings on both are broken on mine and I am unsure how to correctly redo it. |
Re: Hello to the Group
开云体育I was going to mention the Wireless Girl site but Steve, N4RM,
beat me to it! Lotsa stuff on that site that goes well beyond the
Viking II & CDC.
Check out the very indepth analysis of these rigs. There is an
investigation/debunking of mods that have been "out there" on the
net, and mods that Janice finally implemented. The Viking II discussion on modulation also applies to various AM
transmitters. It is worth a read if you want to avoid destroying
your iron in just about any AM transmitter.? I blew up a mod
transformer on a Valiant years ago, never knowing why, and finally
found the answer here. Many tips to learn about here. The CDC, in addition to the expanded coverage, has a really nice fast-acting compression circuit not present in the Viking II. I decided to leave that circuit unmodded - it works really well as far as I'm concerned. Check out the other topics on this site, quite a lot of info. 73 John KN3I |
Re: Hello to the Group
开云体育Hello all, A very good resource for all things Viking II.? Lots of things
about how to check these rigs out and repair/restore them.? I had acquired my Viking II CDC model from an estate about 8 years ago (maybe 10).? It had been used, while sitting on a shelf, in a rack cabinet.? There was not top, no bottom, and now back/sides 'wrap-around' sheet metal.? Over the next several months, I was either given, or purchased for 'peanuts', five more Viking II's, in order to scrounge the cabinet pieces I need, and for general spare parts.? One of them was another CDC model. Well, during Covid, I wound up restoring two of the five, which was kind of enjoyable when there's nothing else you can do.?? I found this site a great place and very useful. 73 de Steve, NR4M 73 de Steve, NR4M On 10/11/2023 9:52 AM, WA8JXM wrote:

Re: Hello to the Group
Thanks, Steve!? I have never seen or heard of that in the 59 years I have had the rig. The Viking II is an amazing rig with its output circuit.? The only antenna it ever failed to load was a 3 foot metal fishing rod, on 2.2 MHz! 73, Ken On Wed, Oct 11, 2023 at 9:35?AM Steve Bookout, NR4M <steve@...> wrote:

开云体育Quicker way to tell is by the band switch. It covers all frequencies between 1.8 and 30 MHz. In several bands.??Steve NR4M? On Oct 10, 2023, at 10:49 PM, WA8JXM <wa8jxm@...> wrote:

If I may ask, what is a Johnson Viking II CDC?? I have my old Viking II (purchased used?in 1964 after?I got my General)? but this is the first time I have seen the "CDC" part.?? Hi Jim, I took some additional pics of my Invader 2000 while I was doing some repairs and applying a little Deoxid. I've got some better images than what is posted on a earlier post. I've resized the images so I'm not sure how crisp they will display but I can resize them to a larger file size if needed. I've included a few with the skin on but have more with the skin removed if anyone in is interested. |
