Thanks, ED and Jeff. There seems to be as many schemes as there were locomotives, one reason why I like the D&H. I have a bunch of RS-3s in at least 8 differing schemes, and none are any of the rent-a-wrecks.
Then there are the U23Bs, GPs, and the RS-11/36s... Bruce ----------------------------------------- From: "Ed Cox via groups.io"To: "[email protected]" Cc: Sent: Monday May 27 2024 8:14:56AM Subject: Re: [DandH-Railroad] The Lightning Stripe Scheme Good morning Bruce,
As Jeff stated, there was also a
period where a side number appeared on the side of the running
boards on some lightning striped engines. This was limited to the
RS-11s, RS-36s and the SD45s. Starting by 2/68, Gothic numbers
started showing up on most of these units. It was about centered on
the RS units above the fuel tank and above the front axle of the
rear truck on the SD45s. Because of the radiator flaring of the
SD45s, the yellow number couldn't be applied there as on the other
six axle units.
With the arrival of the C-628s,
a yellow number appeared above the radiator. This continued on the
U30Cs, U23Bs and U33Cs.
The Railroad Roman number
started appearing on the side of all engines, under the "Delaware &
Hudson" by 3/71. Eventually, they were changed to the Gothic
type.?
The large number on the sides of
the lightning striped units was generally a "patch job". This
stared by 5/81.
These dates are from pictures I
have found from sources published and unpublished. They are as
accurate as I am able to discern.
I hope this helps.

Hi!
?? While looking at images of Rs-3s and Rs-11/36s I noticed some changes. At first, it appears there were no side numbers. At some point, the side numbers were added. There were two styles, Railroad Roman and Gothic. So when were the side numbers added, and was there a plan to which loco received which lettering? Many, if not all of the 6-axel power received yellow numbers near the radiator exhaust. Did others receive the yellow numbers? Lastly, when did the D&H start applying the large side numbers?
