Collets 3
I know Dennis has said what Collets fit the Dalton B4 30" Lathe a million times and since I do not have any and never wrote it down I seem to have forgotten guess thats what happens in age ---- I think it was a 3C Right or wrong ?? Dennis if you should see this I would be interested in one of your Spindle thread caps if you have anymore of them. Someone awhile back said a Motorcycle front top shock cap will work but never found anything. Terry St.Pete Fl.

Dalton TL 44
Good evening everyone. My family recently purchased an old factory and in the old tool room was a Dalton TL. I am really fond of old machines and have restored a South Bend Heavy 10 and an old knee mill, so when I saw it I quickly snatched it up. At some point over the years, bed extensions had been welded on and after reading everything I could find on Dalton lathes, I was pretty bummed b/c of not knowing the serial number. Wasting no time, I got to work tearing everything apart and cleaning it up and while I'm not close to getting everything "paint ready", I think it's not too bad damaged. The ways have some marks but that's to be expected after almost 100yrs. I knew I didn't want the bed extensions, so I cut them off and stuck the bed in my mill, with the hopes of peeling the metal back until I found the serial number. Well luck would have it that after two nights, I found part of it. They had welded part of it up and that is as clean as I can get it. I think the serial number is 10103 which I would think it high b/c of the tags have the New York address, so I believe it would've had to be built between '22 and '25 but please let me know if you feel that is incorrect. There was a smaller tag with a place for a model number on top of the cutting table tag. Someone has made a steady rest for it over the years, I also found a milling attachment (It looks like it could be from Dalton but there are no markings on it....that I have found), the 3c collets that came with it and a precision level along with a few chucks, and various live and dead centers. The collets all have Dalton stamped on them. I have not found the collet draw bar yet, so I guess I'll have to make one of those if I can't find it. I don't think the Master motor is the one that came with it but after doing some research, it is period correct and runs like a top. My plan is to get it back to as close to new as I can (within reason) and to quote Henry Ford "you can have any color you want as long as its black", so black is what it will be. I plan to bring everyone along as I go and if anyone has any pointers or information, please let me know. Thanks Trey

Tray I’m not at home right now and only have my phone to communicate with so I’m limited.
The numbers and letters you see are casting pattern identification numbers. The item you call a hanger is one of two standards that held the ceiling mounted countershaft. As to moving the belt from one pulley to the next it was done by walking the belt off one pulley to the next and was done by hand. As to powder coat my black TL is finished in 60% gloss black powder coat. The first one I did in ? coat is my 1917 Lot 6. If you have never mask for powder coat it takes a Special Mylar tape. Will say it’s a bastard to work with. This tape is very ridged and does not stretch so it takes a. Lot of small pieces to go around odd shapes. Also if you need to use any filler only JB weld can be used under powder coat as it’s good to 500 degrees. As to the end door we have seen similar things on other models besides your TL. Too bad I’m not home as I have pictures that would help you. Dennis

Early Lot 6 4
Hello ALL, Just acquired this nicely restored lot 6, Sn 7090, 36” bed, from Bill Fit, in Seattle. Bill acquired the lathe from a previous private owner in Oregon. Not much is known about the lathe, except that it is a west coast machine and has a brass badge with inscription “Harringtons 092” rivet to the headstock gear cover. I assume this badge might by an early 20th machine shop inventory tag of some sort. Loose brass badging that comes with the machine shows a patent date of 1922. So either thismlathe dates from the 1920’s, or the badging came off another machine at some point. I assumed early lot 6’s were built prior to 1920’s. Also, The back gear motor mount appears to have been reworked, maybe installed in lieu of the original Dalton motor mount. But, Iam not very familiar with the subtleties of the Dalton 6. The angled dovetail on the cross slide is something I haven’t seen before. The lot 6 does seem to be a more robust lathe than the SB 9” I have, from the same mid 1920’s time frame. glenn B.

Lot 2 lathe 7
Hello, I just came across a lot 2 Dalton lathe and want to add a tool post to this. I am looking for some feedback on what others have done. I’m also interested in a 4” Chuck for this. Does anyone have parts for these lathes? I’m glad I found this group so I can ask more questions pertaining to these vintage, unique lathes. Craig

Lot 4 lathe and tooling … free 15
Lot 4, no. 256. Two three jaw chucks, a lantern tool holder and what is likely a shop made tool holder (by the previous owner). I believe all the change gears are here, as well and a collet closer (twist to close). The lathe was given to me, so I’m passing it along the same way. Pickup from the northern Chicago suburbs. Steady Rest 7
Is there anyone that might have a Steady Rest that fits a Dalton B-4 Lot 4/30” Bed. I know they are not to be found but do pop up now and then. Since I do not know what it looks like for my Dalton when out at flea markets or on the internet looking pictures would work nice and maybe some dimensions to work off of would be very nice if someone has one. Any help out there would be great .Thanks Terry Sent from Mail for Windows

WTB: new chuck for Lot 5 8
Hi guys, The chuck on my Lot 5 seems to be on its last legs. Can anyone recommend a modern replacement that is affordable and able to be easily mounted to my spindle? Seems like the one I have has a 3-jaw setup with a plain back that threads onto the spindle. Seems like there are a few options from Bison, but not sure if anyone has tried mounting these before. Any suggestions welcome. I use my Lot 5 almost every day and really need something that can reliably hold my work. Bushings and spindle are all running well. Just need a new chuck. Thanks! Dalton type B-6 for sale 5
My brother bought this years ago from Dennis Turk, and it has one of Dennis' reproduction thread dials on it. Cabinet with drawers not included. I think Glen was going to finish it up and use it, but now I just want to sell it to help my sister-in-law out. Asking $500 for everything shown except the cabinet. I wanted members here to have 1st shot on it before listing it on Craigslist or eBay. I'd prefer not to ship, since I've seen so many disasters caused by careless shippers of lathes, shapers, etc. Not to mention prohibitive shipping rates. Dennis can chime in with any additional information on this. It is currently in Tillamook, Oregon, but I may bring it over to my shop in Salem within a week or two. Thanks, Dan Linscheid

OT: partsproduction has passed away 3
Just a quick note to let everyone know that my brother (Glen) passed away 2 days ago. He went by the username partsproduction both here and over in the Practical Machinist forum. He would have turned 74 this November. A massive heart attack took him quickly.

New Lathe owner Dalton 6 3
Hello Dalton Folks I found this lathe in Grass Valley, California for $300. Posted a photo album "daron dalton 9x4" No gears but includes lot of tooling. I just wanted something for making nicer aluminum spacers and lightening gears for Alfa Romeo gearboxes. I have no idea how to lathe so it will be an adventure. It was very rusty when I got it but cleaning up to working state. Crossfeed lead nut worn and has some slop. Trying to understand how to operate the powered cross-feed independently of the main feed. I suspect the "clutch" is stuck so may have to take the apron off and tinker a bit there. regards Daron

Unusual motor on a TL electrical shop repair lathe 4
Hi guys. So a few years ago I picked up a second TL Dalton. This one was unlike my first one or the pattern makers lathe. First off the lathe had a double gear reduction overhead drive so the lathe only turns about 450 rpm. Second it does not have the pattern makers spindle nose that is 1 1/2 - 8 rather this lathe has the 1 1/4 - 12 spindle nose. The lathe came with a face plate a dead center for the spindle and a Jacobs generator chuck for the tail stock. It also came with one tool holder and a lathe dog. The lathe though in just wonderful condition was covered with copper shavings. It was obvious to me that the lathe had been used to turn commutators on generator and starter motors for the auto industry as well as maybe the repair of old induction run repulsion start electric motors. These motors are equipped with a commutator and brushes like a DC motor though they are AC. So one other thing was really unusual and that was the motor that was installed on the over head drive. This motor is built unlike any motor I have ever seen. This motor is equipped with a centrifugal clutch on the motor shaft. The armature spins freely on the motor shaft and the armature has a centrifugal clutch and the motor shaft has a clutch drum. The motor runs really well and it will spin up about one third of its rated rpm before the clutch engages the shaft. I think this motor was used to start heavy loads. Take a look at the pictures as this is a most interesting Dalton lathe. Dennis

Spindle nose thread protector
Hi guys. Sorry been off line for so long. I have a new email address and now can read as well as post to the Dalton sight. I see questions about thread protectors. I still have a large quantity of spindle nose thread protectors I made up some years ago. These are for the 1 1/4- 12 spindle on the Lot 2 3 4 and 5 lathes as well as the Dalton TL that has the same spindle nose. These TL models are kind of rare as they were marketed as electrical shop lathes and as such had the 1 1/4 - 12 spindle rather than the more common 1 1/2 - 8 we usually see on the TL pattern makers lathe. $15 and shipping if interested. The picture shows an original Dalton thread protector and the ones I made are exact copies though made of Aluminum and black anodized were as the originals were cast iron. The second picture shows an original and also one I made. You can email me at dennisturk448@...

Daron Websters Dalton Six photos
Take a look at the photos Daron posted in our photos section yesterday. Photo # 5600 shows the compound tool post mount at what appears to be a 30° rotation from the cross feed ways, in the casting itself. Are these common in the Dalton Six? Just curious, as I'd not seen this before. He told me that it appears to be a factory unit. Dennis? Glen? Have you guys seen these? Thanks, Dan

Dennis, I'd be interested in one of your spindle thread protectors if you still have some available. How do we go about getting funds and info to you? Would also be interested in thread dials if you decide to make some, or even just one of the gears. - Chris

New Dalton Lot 5 Owner 11
I bought a Dalton Lot 5 last weekend. I'll post better pictures sometime in the next couple of weeks. It was part of a bigger buy and I need to get everything put away before I can get proper pictures. It was, says the previous owner, black with gold pinstripes. It is currently dirt/rust covered. It has lived outside for an extended period of time. The compound does move but nothing else does. I noticed near zero back lash in the compound and no visible ridge on the ways. I have a feeling it was purchased and stuck in a corner somewhere and rarely used. Hopefully it looks just as good once the dirt/rust/grime is removed. It is a 36" bed, Lot 5 no 50. I has a taper attachment and threading dial. No change gears. Three jaw chuck. It is missing all guards include the rear guard that would have the change gear threading information. My plans are to restore it to as near as how it left the factory as possible. I'd love to find some guards to replace the missing one but will fabricate some if needed. I need change gears and would like to buy some original ones but if not will be happy with some from Boston Gear. I will use the lathe some but I have others so it is more of a restoration/history project.
