Re: Best TV Shows in 2010/2011

jhdouglas59

Linda;

I am dead on serious about my list.

Concerning entertainment performances live and in person:

We went to Gruene Hall yesterday (in New Braunfels-kind of close)
to see Gurf Morlix and Ray Bonneville for free. Gruene Hall has
free Sunday entertainment in an old dance hall setting. It was
great.

We are almost groupies for live entertainment for relatively
unknown but great sounding entertainers at house concerts.

We are regular attendees at Alamo RV Park house concerts in Boerne.

Great entertainment because the host insists on his house rules--
no cell phones and absolute quiet while the entertainers sing
and play their guitars or whatever. There is a potluck dinner
before the performance and desserts at intermission.

Do you have any house concerts close to Allen?

Check out
to see what kinds of acts perform there.

We were in Allen at Thanksgiving but I think you were in Ohio
then.

Hope your Patsy Cline routine is going well.

As far as tv shows, make sure you see Pit Boss this Saturday
on Animal Planet. The season's premiere starts then (around 9pm
central time).

Still trying to figure out how to type correctly without making
mistakes for these e-mails. Every time I make a mistake and
use the backspace key it messes up the sentence length and paragraphs
and makes me look incompetent (which is probably accurate).

You told me once how to make the contents look right. Can you
clue me in again as to how to do the correction routine and make
the sentences look pristine (as though I had not made typing mistakes)? I admire those who do intelligent looking e-mails--unlike me. I never will get used to the touch of electric typewriters
and computer keyboards. What the world needs is a keyboard with
the touch of the old klutzy typewriters we had at Dalton High.

Hard to believe I actually got an A in typing. All I remember
is the ticking metronome which Mrs. Eshelman used to get us to
speed up.

Glad to hear someone actually read my dalton59 posting.

Later,

Juan (proper spelling these days for John)

Nobody asked me

jhdouglas59

Here are a few items I never asked for:

1. T shirts with no tags. Hard to see which is the front or back of
the t shirt. It was easier just to feel the tag. Now without
the tag I sometimes put on the t shirt backwards.

2. Pants with pleats. What a waste of material.

3. Pants with cuffs. Another waste of material.

4. Shirts with no pockets. What a dumb idea. Pockets are useful
as a place in which to place pretzels from Tractor Supply Co.

5. Shoes with shoelaces so long I have to double tie the knot to
keep the knots tied or they come loose and I trip over my own
two feet.

6. Neckties. They are only good for funeral attendance.

7. Cell phones with too many features. I only want a cell phone
for phone conversations and voice messages. How do you buy a
cell phone without the texting feature? Maybe I need a Maxwell
Smart shoe phone instead.

8. CFL lightbulbs. What's wrong with Thomas Edison bulbs?

9. Gasoline with ethanol. What a brilliant concept. Use our
corn supply to make gasoline which results in lower mpg and
increases the cost of our food supply.

What other dingbat inventions, etc. may bother you?

Nothing else to do today on this drizzly day but digress.

Have a mundane day.

Hi Keith:
Thank you very much for the kind words.? I'm glad they enjoyed.? That means a lot coming from you and your Dad - as you and your whole family are musicians.? Their Activity Dir, Kathy Smucker, told me to let her know when I come back into the area again - as I may get to go back again sometime.

Hi Linda Freeland here...Merry Christmas from Texas! on a Christmas eve before I go to bed to everybody - wherever you find yourself tonight - as we celebrate Jesus' birth.

Been busy ever since I got home from going to Dalton over Thanksgiving and never got a chance to report on that trip. I had a great time although the time went very fast. Before I left, many were decorating their homes up for Christmas, which was really nice to get a little of Ohio Christmas flavor. I did get to perform two times.

First was the Sat. after Thanksgiving over at Buehlers supermarket in Orrville in their Community room. I had two cars of "Smith" relatives on my Mom's side that drove over from Alliance to attend. Also friends of my sister, Cindy, and my Mom were there. I met a lady in the store earlier in the week complimenting her on a purple hat she had on. We struck up a conversation and I told her that I was going to perform there on Sat and she
said she heard about it already. That was sort of a "God-thing" that of all people I spoke to her and she had heard about it ??? Anyway, she did end up coming and drove in all the way from Columbus (where she had been visiting her sister for Thanksgiving) that morning to be in attendance also. I can't remember her first name now, but her last name was "Marthey" - a very nice lady.

The second performance was on Monday, Nov. 29th at Orrvilla Senior Community in Orrville, Ohio. I had a great time over there. My Mom was w/me and we first went to the wrong building. Then we were directed elsewhere and my Mom said she would go in and see if this was correct place. Well, she didn't come out and didn't come out. Finally she did. What happened was when my Mom went in there, so many folks recognized her and they immediately started visiting and wanting her to sit down and have lunch with them, etc. It was like "Old home week!" For me too...some lady
started asking me if I remembered her from the Methodist church when I was a small child - really "no" I didn't remember her. Keith, your Dad was there - so good to see him! He told me he thoroughly enjoyed my program and the songs. Gwen, I saw Linda, your sister. Got to talk w/her afterwards and pray over her. Met her boyfriend as well and he took our picture together, which she
sent me a copy of it. Also, Barbara Gerber, a relative for sure of Karen Gerber's. She was in my Mom's class at school, so not sure if an Aunt or what. Then, Mary Shane, a sister to Cookie was there also. Plus there were some other wonderful people there including the Activity Director, Kathy Smucker,(for Independent Sr. group) who was a "sweetheart" of a person. I sang in front of the Christmas tree and it was a wonderful experience.

Again, Merry Christmas - got to get to bed - have lots to do in the morning. P.S. My babysitter when I was young, June Ressler Hiner,
got to be the Grand Marshall in the Dalton Christmas parade held after I left. I was so happy for her to be chosen to do that. She was at my Buehler's concert as well.

2010 Review/2011 Preview

jhdouglas59

Per Patricia's request, here?are our 2010 highlights and 2011 preview:

2010 Review:

Jan-went to Walmart and Costco

Feb-ditto to above

Mar-ditto to above

Apr-ditto to above and also went to Fiesta in San Antonio.? Also took a day trip to Rocksprintgs, Tx just because we have never been there before.? On the way back to Boerne, we stopped to see Stonehenge replica in Ingram, Tx before it is dismantled.

May-ditto to Mar and also went to Kerrville Folk Festival.? We go there every year and are probably Kerrverts by now.? Amazing to see so many hippie, weirdos, and old people (like us) plus Obama bumper stickers (mostly on old VW vans).? They still sell dye-tie t shirts there also.

Jun-ditto to Mar.? Also mowed our lawn.

Jul-ditto to Jun above.

Aug-ditto to Jul above.

Aug-ditto to Jul plus we went to visit Lanny for his 70th birthday party in Az.? On the way back to Boerne, we stopped in Las Cruces, NM and found a pepper store where we bought dried chili peppers and also green Hatch peppers--yum.? Then we stopped at a bed & breakfast in Balmorhea, Tx.? Would you believe the owner is a food broker/other stuff broker and deals with Peter Dunn's in Dalton?? He also sells Laird Ranch jelly (made by Troyer's in Holmes County).? Small world indeed.

Sep-ditto to July plus we went to Hawaii (big island of Hawaii and also Maui).? Rose has always wanted to go to Hawaii so I finally gave in--and glad I did.? The sunsets in Maui are for real.

Oct-ditto to July and also went to the International Accordion Festival in San Antonio.? It is an annual event and would recommend it to everyone (even though I don't really like accordions).? Where else can you see a group who sings punk rock /conjunto music with accordions?

Nov-ditto to July plus we went to Wurstfest in new Braunfels, Tx.? Good accordion music, sausage and beer extravaganza.

Dec-ditto to July and we plan to go to the annual Tuba Christmas Festival on the Riverwalk at the Arneson Theater.? Probably 100 or so tubas of various shapes and sizes with performers from ages of 8-80 performing.? Would highly recommend this to everyone.

?

2011 Preview:

No clue yet what we will do next year.?? For sure, go to Walmart (Wally World)? and Costco.

Tentative plans are to drive the perimeter of? USA and stop in Washington, DC to visit my sister.? Then on to Boston to see our daughter.? Then probably to Dalton to see my brother.? Then who knows what from there.? Maybe North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota just because we have never been there.

Merry Christmas to all,

Re: Cheesy lighted Christmas wreaths circa 1959

jhdouglas59

New update.

Now I have finally hoisted my red chili pepper lights in our kitchen
above the counters. Now this is real class-perhaps a bit cheesy also.

Christmas would not be Christmas without the red chili pepper lights I always say.

Nothing like a fake Christmas tree and red chili pepper lights to
make for an old fashioned Christmas.

Too bad we don't have the aluminum Christmas tree anymore.

I must say the newer fake trees are so realistic that they shed needles just like the real trees.

All I need now is a Lionel train at the base of the tree to make
for a real authentic Christmas.

May all you lads and lasses have a neato Christmas,

The Curmudgeon Weaselmeister

Addendum to my previous e-mail.

I now have found some of the wreaths I was pondering before.

If a person were to search for cellophane lighted Christmas wreaths
on the internet, one would find that there are some of these
available as memorabilia. The ones I found are red with red lights
in the center as a bulb for the candle fixture.

One might imagine that the cellophane wreaths are some kind of
fire hazard. Probably true that they are indeed.

I had forgotten that they made them with red lights.

That must explain why so many people drove past our house.

Maybe they thought it was the Dalton red light district.

I suppose I am the only one to see the humor in that--my mother
had no clue what was so funny about that.

The Curmudgeon strikes again.

Merry Christmas.

Help!

As I was putting up my new eco-friendly dim C7 outside multi-colored
Christmas lights outside last week, I thought back to the 50's
and what kind of decorations we used to have at our home. These new
eco-freak lights save a lot of energy but they are very hard to see
(especially if a person has cataracts such as I).

Finally I had the flashback about the cheesy artificial green wreaths
with a light in it (orange or yellow I think) and how it might somehow
look nifty today. So I surfed the internet for these cheesy wreaths
and alas no luck finding them. I think all the Christmas stuff got
trashed when my mother moved from her house to the nursing homes
a few years ago.

Anybody remember of which I speak? (Miss Campbell would be proud
that I did not end my question with a preposition).

May the spirit of Christmas past be with you all,

The Weaselmeister (has returned to the group after a few months of
non-participating--more junk to follow as I reflect on life's futilities).

Re: Cheesy lighted Christmas wreaths circa 1959

David Yoder

Hoosier greetings to the Class of 59!? I remember driving to Canton and loved seeing all the blue Christmas lights both along the streets and houses.? I also remember the "foil" trees with disco lights changing the colors.? I remember Mom making me cut up Buehler bread wrappers and punching them on to a wire hanger to make a "white" Christmas wreath to hang on the door.? We didn't call it recyling back then but many of us learned to wash plastic bags and aluminum foil to reuse again.? I hated having my lunch sandwiches wrapped in wax paper taken from cereal boxes!? Couldn't wait until I was old enough to plead at the grocery store to buy real wax paper!
?
Although Dave continues to take chemo pills 5 days a week followed by 3 weeks of healing, we did accept my sister's offer to spend a week in Branson MO the first week of November.? Dave thought he would not have the energy to do the trip but after I reminded him that since he sleeps all day at home, he could sleep all day in the apartment while she and I go shopping, he agreed to try it.? She and I hit most of the quilt shops in the area.? Also went to the College of the Ozarks for a meal to help students learn the craft of cooking, waiting on tables etc.? You do remember that the kids work their way through college in lieu of paying tutition.? Bought some of their fruit cake which Dave says is much better than the commercial stuff.? Also took a scenic train trip through the Ozarks but the best show was Yakov Smirnoff.? It was worth the trip just to see Dave do belly laughs for 2 hours.? Laughter is the best medicine.? We did see other shows like SIX, the 6 brothers who sing a capella and the Dutton Family who, from Grandpa and Grandma down through the grandchildren all play musical insturments and sing.? What a good tradition - and work ethic is passed on in that family.
?
Dave has another MRI tomorrow.? The oncologist wants to keep tabs on the "lit up" areas to see if it is just residue from the radiation or whether it is in fact, little tumors growing.? The best thing about this anaplastic astrocytoma is that it will stay only in the brain and not metastize elsewhere.? He is till ambulatory for which we are thankful.? I still have my church job, ogran only, but I still get cabin fever to go out and do more.? I need prayers for patience!
?
Seasons greetings to all, post date that to include Thanksgiving!

mayo, and dill pickle at your local DQ yet?

We still say Merry Christmas at our house,

Johnny

Our trip to Ohio..............
Nov 29- Left GA Monday morning 830 arrived in Waverly, Ohio at ?Jackie holt about 3 pm. She lives in Bristol Village ??
one of the best retirement places I have seen. Was great to see her again! ?After much conversation we had a great dinner of BBQ chicken, sweet potatoes and veggies and pumpkin and pecan pie. ?Then a trip to Wal-Mart to find some blinds that needed to be replaced for Jackie. ?Early to bed as it had been a long day. ?I enjoyed the down time to catch on my magazine reading. ?Woke up the next morning to snow. ?Soon we were off to a Dr. appointment and then to Bob Evans for a great breakfast. ?Back to Jackie’s where George replaced her blinds and a wonderful salad for dinner. ?Jackie left early next morning to go on a bus trip to a ?dinner theater. ?We headed out shortly after but not ?until we stopped by the Bristol Village White Elephant shop where I found a few cute things. ?

On up the road to Wooster Ohio (where two of our children were born, me too, same hospital) and through the beautiful flatlands of ?Ohio and the never ending fields and farms to visit Phyllis, George’s sister. ?She has been widowed for a couple of years and has been through some tough physical and emotion times but has now found a wonderful companion, Denny, who she is enjoying life with. ?It was wonderful to see her so happy. While there we got to meet Denny and his daughter. ?We approve! ?Short visit and then on to Dalton where I grew up (well not really, still waiting) ?Stayed with Skip and Camille Olsen (Schultz) that night. ?We went to Bishops to enjoy a memorable Nutty Muffet. ?All that was missing was the drive in restaurant and car hops. ?Spent the evening talking about the past, present and future and hunting and fishing.

Next morning Camille and I took off to Amstutz Pantry where they have a large selection of bulk foods and ?trail bologna and baby Swiss. ?We loaded up and then back to her house where we shared our goodbyes and then took off for Kidron’s Lehman Hardware. ? ?That is one place that you need to spend a whole day or perhaps two. ?One hour was about all we had so shopped quick and left. ?Decided to see if our friends, who live just up the street ,were home and for once they were. ?Heinz Peter and his wife Rosie were good friends of our when we lived in Dalton and George worked with Heinz at Schantz Organ Company. ? It was great to see them after so many years and catch up on our families. ?

After leaving there we decided to drive back to Dalton to see my childhood friend Peggy Hoover Henning and her husband Greg. ?After a nice visit with them we took off for Frostburg MD to see our friends Jackie and Sterling Edwards. ?We arrived there around 7PM to some wonderful smells of meatloaf and potatoes and ?vegetables. ? Then the apple pie showed up! ?YUM! ?After and evening of visiting we said good night and fell into bed. ?It had been a great day of visiting many friends.

Next morning we had breakfast, some of Jackie’s homemade granola, but saved room so we could go to the Tai Restaurant for lunch. ?Soon it was time for Thai food and ?it was divine. ?We then drove to Penn Alps where we like their Buckwheat Pancake Mix which is made at Stanton Mills, ?
a very old mill from the 17th century. ? We were informed that we may want to stick around as they were having their Christmas in the village with luminaries lighting the paths. ?The snow was coming down rapidly and it was a perfect setting for the evening. ?We then went to a small church in the village where some school choirs were performing Christmas songs. ?Back thru the snow to the Edwards home. ? We had an evening of domino’s and ?phase 13 and coffee and conversation. ?It is always great to see my two Jackie friends that I love.

Left early next morning and headed home. ?We were on I-81 going thru VA when we started to see weather warnings and soon we were in a bunch of ?snow and cars sliding off the road and trucks splashing slush all over when passing acting like they owned the road. ?The temps were dropping quickly and we decided to get off the road and ?stay at La Quinta where we felt safe from the storm.?

Dec.5 - Left around 9am after loading up on breakfast and headed back to Blue Ridge arriving around 2PM. ?It was a great trip, wonderful visits but always to get back ?home to our cat! ?Thank you Lord for safe travels and good times. ?
