Re: Who remembers Cleveland TV stations in the 50's?
Well, the announcer always says "Now, please join Kate
Smith as she sings God Bless America".
?
I guess any singer who has been recorded never

--- Chuck: I remember the old party telephone lines, too. I don't think we had a crank phone, but I remember how infuriated my mother would get when she heard another person on the party line listening to her phone conversations (otherwise known as eavesdropping). I recall that my Uncle Leroy Moser had the old crank type phone, and I was always intrigued by that phone. I liked his phone better than ours because it had a crank on it. We just had that stupid rotary phone. The good old days... Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Our Miss Brooks, Sky King, Jackie Gleason & The Honeymooners, Arthur Godfrey, Jack Paar, Burns and Allen ("Good night, Gracie"), and in the '70s, Glenn and I loved Flip Wilson's Geraldine character (and her boyfriend "Killer").???
?
By the way, does anyone remember this??????Your telephone number used to have a word in front of the numbers.???For example, my parents was TA8-2460.????The TA stood for TALBOT.???? When we cleaned out my mother's house, she still had that old phone?in her basement.??? It was written this way:?? TALBOT8-2460 but you only dialed the TA?part.??? Thus, 828-2460.??? ?
?
I can recall that bellboy who?called out ?"Phillip Morris", but I can't for the life of me recall the name of that show.
?
Glenn and I talked to Harold Saurer last night.??? He won't be coming to our reunion.??? He has these anxiety attacks due to the Vietnam war.??? He was burned real badly, if you recall, when his helicopter which he was piloting was shot down.??? He has paid a dear price..........

I had a flashback about the bad old days of local tv (before
cable and satellite), and I recalled how awful the choices were back
then. Does anybody remember the Gene Carroll show at noon on Sundays?
It was the local version of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. I remember
that we would make a mad dash home after church to watch that show (I think it was on WEWS TV). What a laugh it was to watch Gene introduce the talent before they came on the show. Those were the days!
Also, I remember the flaming redhead Dorothy Fuldheim on the
local news (probably on WEWS TV also). She was a legend back then.
How about Ghoulardi (on Channel 8?). He had some ghoulish second
or third rate horror movies every Saturday night. And I actually looked
forward to his show every week. I watched his show on my 7 inch black and white tv that I think I got for my birthday. That tv
was about 2 feet square and probably weighed about 80 or 90 pounds.
But it was real groovy at the time. I don'r recall the brand name but it
might have been a Crosley or a Dumont. It had a whole lot of
tubes in it. That tv really threw off the heat. That was great in the winter but not too swift in the summer.
I don't remember when we got our first color tv. I just remember going to Bud Powley's and Jimmy Amstutz's stores and being amazed that the tv's they were selling were in color. And all I had was
a crummy black and white tv. I guess I should just count my
blessings that I had a tv at all.
What other local tv shows were there back then? Let me know what else we watched back then.

Re: Who remembers Cleveland TV stations in the 50's?
-- These were not local Cleveland tv shows, but who remembers some of these legendary great innovative tv shows: Pinky Lee show (starring, who else, Pinky Lee) Mr Peepers (starring Wally Cox) Mr Wizard (Don Herbert)--a great science show for kids The Cisco Kid with his sidekick Pancho The Lone Ranger with his sidekick Tonto (Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels) Some kind of space show with phony rocketships. I can't remember the name. Was it Captain Video? Flash Gordon (a weekly series with short episodes of 15 minutes?) I do remember the Howdy Doody Show with Buffalo Bob, Clabelle the deaf mute clown (all clowns are creepy), Princess Summerfallwinterspring, Phineas T Bluster, and others. Steve Allen show (The Tonight Show before Johnny Carson was on it) Amos and Andy (with the Kingfish--that show was really funny) The Stu Erwin Show Mama (an awful show); maybe it was I Remember Mama? Anyways, I choose to forget it. Bishop Fulton Sheen-a real entertaining show. Ted Mack Amateur Hour ( a precurser of The Gong Show which appeared in the 70's or 80's)--now that's my kind of show. Dragnet (starring Jack Webb who married Julie London--she was really a great singer with a sexy voice) Kate Smith (God Bless America) I don't remember the show, but maybe somebody does; all I remember are the dancing Old Gold cigarettes. There was also some show that this goofy bellboy calls for Philip Morris. What was that show? Just trying to recall some of the great? shows of the 50's... Re: How to kill a rat with an oboe (aka high school band instrument disposal)
I'm really behind in this conversation, but here is a
memory from the band program.? The band went to contest and there was a
rather difficult section for the clarinets that we hadn't learned very
well.? When we got to that part, we didn't play it any better than we had
learned it; apparently Nancy or Barbara saw the judges when we played that part
and said that one of them practically knocked her glasses off looking at the
music when we played it.? I think we ended up with a second or third
ranking; it was definitely not "Superior".
?
My clarinet was school-owned; so I had to return it
when we graduated.? I thought about getting one a couple of years ago, but
decided that something different might be more interesting, and decided on a
cello.? My wife related this to her sister when she was here for
Thanksgiving and her sister gave me a new student-level for Christmas that
year!? That was five years ago, and I have been attempting to learn to play
it since then; I have taken lessons.? It's the hardest thing I've ever
done, musically.? It's probably harder than learning to play golf, although
I think I have a better chance of getting good at playing the cello than I do of
getting good playing golf.
?
All of this reminiscing is fun, but my detailed memory
of many of these things is fuzzy, at best.? I enjoy reading all of the
responses.

Patricia, ? First let me thank you for getting this thing together.? Do not get discourged, keep up the good work.? Even tho I may not participate as many?as the ?others do, eg weasel, I read all the messages and enjoy them.

Sure is a cute bunch of kids but i can hardly see it let alone guess
who anyone is. Perhaps we can blow it up for us with older eyes. anyhow i have just been thinking about the two churches and who went
to which ones. it seems that the more affluent people went to the presbyterian and the more middle class went to the methodist. or is that just a case of too much thinking? i remember that the les mosers went to the ME and the weisgarbers and the douglas's and
the goudy's went to the PRES. oh yes and the I Glen Berg's went to
the ME
as Alberta played the organ. lets take a poll........ ...where did you go to church as a child? or where did your family drag you?
we went to the ME and i have lots of great memories of revivals and church camp and youth fellowship and church dinners. One of my memories of going to church was that my dad would escort me up
the street to church and then toss out his cigar as we got closer. He would then turn around and walk back home as I crossed the
street. Also who remembers the OX ROAST? and the street carnivals? and
the sock hops on the school black top where all the girls had to
dance together. the DJ's came from wooster or massillon and played all the
great tunes from the 50's. We were a lucky bunch of kids growing
up in a great era...we just did not realize it! Just love looking at the pictures of the guys at Brownies that Corrine posted......

I posted a picture of the Dalton Presbyterian Choir. Don't know the

Well I don't know if it is the phrase that you are looking for but one of my most ?frightening moments In chorus was when I saw him jump up and down turn red In the face because we would not?listen?and be quiet and he said "Judas Priest" and I about crawled under my chair as I was sure it was a?really? terrible swear word!? ?pjlee ? -------Original Message----- -- ? Hi All, I have a question:???? what did Vic Gerber say when he was frustrated with a sour note (either in band or chorus)???? He would say a phrase as he wildly raked his hands through his hair and paced.??? What was that phrase???? Last year at Glenn's 50th, Don Adams (who married Priscilla "Pootsie" Gerber, Vic's daughter) said the phrase and now I can't remember it.??? Anyone remember it?????? Gwen

Patricia, ? First let me thank you for getting this thing together.? Do not get discourged, keep up the good work.? Even tho I may not participate as many?as the ?others do, eg weasel, I read all the messages and enjoy them. ? We attended the Methodist church, caty corner from the Presbyterian church.? I remember a couple of things.? I remember Mr. Thomas after the services standing out front smoking his cigarette and just talking to me about things, a dumb kid and he took the time to jaw with me.? I remember one Sunday rev. Price had invited an evangelist to the service and after he preached he asked all those in the congregation (who were praying with eyes closed) who wanted to be saved to stand up.? I guess I was so inspired, (why??I never listened to the sermons anyway), I stood up and I stood there I peeked around and saw that no one else stood up.? A very embarassing moment as he asked who all stood up to come forward, and of course I did not. ? Does anyone remember or participated in the Youth for Christ at the Methodist church?? Keep it up because memories are coming back. ? Waiting?? Is life about waiting?? In school I waited for it to end.? I waited for the school year to be over and for summer to come.? In the army I "hurried up and wait".? In my life occupation I waited and watched.? Now, I find myself in the doctors office waiting for tests, opinions, diagnosis, referrals.? OLD AGE IS NOT FOR SISSIES!? ? Lanny ? ?

Sure is a cute bunch of kids but i can hardly see it let alone guess who anyone is. Perhaps we can blow it up for us with older eyes. anyhow i have just been thinking about the two churches and who went to which ones. it seems that the more affluent people went to the presbyterian and the more middle class went to the methodist. or is that just a case of too much thinking? i remember that the les mosers went to the ME and the weisgarbers and the douglas's and the goudy's went to the PRES. oh yes and the I Glen Berg's went to the ME as Alberta played the organ. lets take a poll........ ...where did you go to church as a child? or where did your family drag you? we went to the ME and i have lots of great memories of revivals and church camp and youth fellowship and church dinners. One of my memories of going to church was that my dad would escort me up the street to church and then toss out his cigar as we got closer. He would then turn around and walk back home as I crossed the street.
Also who remembers the OX ROAST? and the street carnivals? and the sock hops on the school black top where all the girls had to dance together. the DJ's came from wooster or massillon and played all the great tunes from the 50's. We were a lucky bunch of kids growing up in a great era...we just did not realize it! Just love looking at the pictures of the guys at Brownies that Corrine posted...... Keep the memories coming~ ~pjlee~

Keith,
I don't have a clue as to who any of those little people are. But I bet you
are one of them! The little fellow in the front row (second person from the
left as you view the photo) doesn't look too happy. I hope that isn't you!

I have been reading all the messages and loving it. Have been busy so
haven't created a bio yet and will post more pictures later. Will also
review and answer some of the questions that are being posted.
I posted a picture of the Dalton Presbyterian Choir. Don't know the year but maybe mid-1940's. Have fun seeing how many you can identify.
I can only get a handful.
