Dahlquist respect or lack thereof.
Has anyone noticed that a lot of people just don’t seem to get it about Dahlquists? ?Particularly the ones beyond the 10’s and sexier ones. ?
People just don’t seem to understand what they are or how they could dethrone some of the other usual suspects. ?For example, I picked up for free an old set of Boston Acoustics A150’s. ?(See waiting on the side in this pic, from when I was trying them out head to head with my m907’s yesterday). ?I posted a thread on Audiokarma and said how I really like them and I was lucky to inherit them for free (though I will want to refoam them at least) but that my m907’s were just better. ?The two speakers each have 1 inch dome tweeters, the Dahli’s having the VIFA’s, the BA’s having a BA tweeter, the BA’s have s 4.5 inch mid, and the m907’s the 5inch VIFA, and each having 10 inch woofers. ? The m907’s want more power to get the same decibels out of the same streamed Tidal music I was using. ?But to me just a one good step above the BA’s. ?Seems like a few on the AK site just don’t understand how I could say that. ?Well, there it is. ?I passed up the BA’s (two way period version) in favor of my DQM-5’s back in the mid 80’s when I bought new for a reason. ?To me, I liked the balance, imaging, punchy tight bass, of the Dahli’s better. ?And the BA’s just seemed slightly shrill or harsh in the treble, tweeter range to me. ?Just my ears. ? Anyway, do you guys run into that with your audio friends or people you meet or talk to? ?Not that it really matters as it is not a competition. ?But just fun to yack about with other appreciators of this brand. |

Introduction for lurking member. Sun Valley, Idaho area.
Hi there! ?I have lurked here for a while and figured I would do an introduction. ?I am Steve, aka sunvalleylaw on lots of audio and guitar forums. ?I have had Dahlquist speakers since I was 21 and bought my first pair of DQM-5’s with the nextel finish and cabinet with the “cheeks” from Magnolia Hi-Fi on Roosevelt in Seattle. ?I still have those, and they have been re-foamed. ?
I have since added two pair of m903’s, because they are useful as rears in my main system when I am watching TV/video and using my 2 channel system for that, and because they are just nice in smaller spaces, and because I couldn’t pass either pair up for the prices they were being offered. My flagship pair is my m907’s I bought from a vintage audio guy in Boise, who had carefully refoamed them, and had too many speakers. ?Got them for only 150 which I thought was pretty good, already being refoamed, being in good cosmetic shape, and having the original matching stands. ? I don’t have any of the sexy 10’s or 20’s or alternatively shaped Dahli’s. ?But I love my more conventionally shaped ones! ? Will be considering doing some re-capping, and so am hear to learn. ?None of mine have been re-capped, and so I wonder if I should do that, especially with my beloved DQM-5’s, which have always blown me away at how good they are, and how they give that almost spooky imaging, being lonely lowly 2 ways. ?I guess Regnar offers some sort of upgrade to that model. ? But want to learn before I try to do anything, when nothing is really broken right now. ? Cheers! |

Re: Recommendations on Compact Amplifiers
开云体育Hi Andy, ? Nuforce and PS Audio make class D amps in addition to some that have been previously recommended. I would respectfully avoid the Carver as they were notoriously unreliable. It was a novel design by Bob Carver that showed promise however the construction was rather cheap and the earlier M400’ S ?did not sound very appealing to me when I auditioned some Dq10’s that I purchased in the early 1990’s ? Although I have not personally heard them, the newer class D ?amps have supposedly made great strides sonically and brands are springing up on the market like weeds. Check out the used market (Audiogon, US Audiomart). ? Jerry
? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Andy Heckl ? @Ed Lindsey - You are spot on. I’m looking for someone here with experience in Class D,G and H amplifiers with you referenced. The two caveats are the unit has a maximum chassis size constraint of 12”x 12” x 12” and capability to drive DQ-10 speakers.? |

Re: Recommendations on Compact Amplifiers
开云体育@dina Hirsch, @ Andy Hecki ? I have no direct experience with M400 amplifiers.? I do however have years of experience with Carver amplifiers, mainly M500 and M1.0 and their variants.? My observations of M400 is that hey are dense topographies that are best when newly restored.? Unrestored examples typically a problematic.? The best technician to talk with about their restoration is Neilson Audio.? They are quick turn-around, eminently competent and fairly priced.? While I highly recommend them I have no affiliation nor receive anything for recommending them. ? If newer topologies are of interest, I suggest looking into the G and D topologies coming to market.? They are dense power, cool running topologies that are clean sounding.? Prices are within a $1000 budget all the way to the stratosphere.? The research can be very educational and interesting. ? That amp is going to get hot running 10's. Do you have space for adequate airflow for it to vent or plan to add a fan? On Sun, Aug 23, 2020 at 11:05 AM Andy Heckl <andyheckl@...> wrote:

Re: Crossovers
Hi all! ?I have been kind of a lurker, as I didn’t have anything I had to do on my speakers. ?I own 4 pair of Dahlquists, some m907’s, my original pair of DQM-5’s I bought as a college student in the 80’s at Magnolia HI-Fi on Roosevelt in Seattle, and two pair of nice little bookshelf m903’s. ?None are the sexy 10’s or 20’s people talk about most here. ?But I do love the Dahlquist sound.
Both the DQM-5’s and the m907’s have been reformed. ?The m903’s don’t need it as they have rubber surrounds. ?None have been re-capped. ?I am not aware of any specific issue with the crossovers in any of them, and they all sound pretty good. ?The DQM-5’s obviously are the oldest and maybe could use it. ?Also, I think Regnar’s crossover has some sort of improvement for those. ? Well, not in any hurry to re-cap, but thought I would join the conversation. ? |

I used pioneer sx1280’s to drive dq10 and two dq 1’s can get 85-95 dB before running into issues when deep bass comes up like cannons on 1812. I have a mac2300 380 wpc texted but it’s big and 125kbs. It drives all easily to dB you can’t stand . Mac 2300 are 2500$ and bigger then your specs. I suspect two carvers would be just as good! But a good 200 w receiver can get by even with subs.. I have two set ups . Second using a polk powered sub and it easily exceeds the dq1’s and doesn’t rob power from receiver . Options? On Sun, Aug 23, 2020 at 11:05 AM Andy Heckl <andyheckl@...> wrote:

Recommendations on Compact Amplifiers
I have an application for a compact amplifier. I’m considering the Carver M-400 amplifier due?to it’s compact size and 201 watt per?channel rating.?

Re: Carl Marchisotti and Dahlquist
开云体育I understand that the final DQ10 models were sold in late 1982 and mine date to 1981, the serial number situation is a little more difficult as I have a pair of sequential model numbers in the late 55,000's - I will have to pull them from the store and then post the serial numbers.? I believe there were 58 to 59,000 pairs made and sold. Sent?from?my?BlackBerry?10?smartphone?on?the?EE?network.
Drian, Thanks for the history, and great listening perspective. I am considering purchasing another set of DQ 10. You mentioned you have a pair from the penultimate year of manufacturing. What year was that, and what was the serial number range produced during that year, if you know.? Thanks! On Jul 27, 2020, at 1:10 PM, drianhodgson <drianhodgson@...> wrote:

Carl Marchisotti and Dahlquist
It's nice to read this article and it goes quite a way to explaining the situation of the Dahlquist DQ10.?

I have owned 7 pairs of DQ10's from the very 1st non-mirrored DQ10's to a pair from the penultimate year of manufacture. Many of these I have had to re-cap and have replaced broken or dysfunctional drive units where required - other than that I have exchanged the Motorola piezo tweeter with 'matched pair Motorola piezo's' chosen both electrically and audibly. Ok, what does all of this experience from 1975 to 2020 actually tell me? The DQ10 with it's very unusual driver array and crossover, originally designed by Jon Dahlquist, and apart from the mirroring modification introduced by Carl Marchisotti (CM), is a 100% original Jon Dahlquist design which is substantially different acoustically from the DQ12, DQ20 and DQ20i - plus all of the other CM designs which followed. I have owned all of the Dahlquist open baffle designs, still owning several pairs of DQ10, DQ12 and DQ20's and can say that the DQ10 is the most 'musical' of the entire range.? The DQ12 and DQ20 are very, very good, I think more accurate than the DQ10 in the rendition of the musical signal especially compared to modern designs from Thiel, Focal, Wilson, etc however, when listening to the 10's compared to the 12's or 20's the 10's have a more natural and pervasive sound which is very difficult to actually better when played with excellent ancilliaries. Interestingly, CM left Dahlquist due to 'bean counter' control and he left to form his own company.?? The original new speaker design he built, Alon IV, is in my view simply an 'better presented and updated DQ20i. I have owned both of them and listened to them extensively 'side by side' and they are very definitely from the same stable, the Alon IV is without a doubt the better speaker, not by much though, CM did a very good job on the original DQ20 and 'i' for Dahlquist. So, for those members who love their CM designed DQ20 and or DQ20i a 'perfected' version is available in the form of the Alon IV and it really is a perfected DQ20i. However, for all those who love and appreciate the original Jon Dahlquist designed DQ10, there is no alternative to the original, they are very different in their musical presentation to any of the subsequent Dahlquist designs and IMHO the original DQ10 design with properly matched and balanced Motorola piezo tweeters is still in 2020 a truly competitive loudspeaker.?
