Hi Richard

Curious in what amps you are using to push the ?DQ subs?

Two subs, lp1, restoration , two sub amps... equals how much in dollars?

?

I bet I have 1k in two subs, lp1, sub amps . So I have that set up running through one speaker outlet b. Then a Polk 12@ 300 w via speaker c. I can compare. Even with polk set at 60hz and less then half vol it produces far deeper, louder, and tighter bass ?for 459.00

?

I¡¯m a purest so I like to use dahlquist system but dollar for dollar the 65 yrs progress renders the factory system inferior sound wise.

?

I also redid the dq10 xo with clarity caps and mills resistors. That made a sig improvement to the mid and high end. Less grating to my ears. Parts cost about 250.00 to redo both.?

Re: DQ LP1 and DQ-1w

Each mans ears are diff. I wish my two subs 500.00, lp1 375.00, two sub amps sounded better then the powered Polk! That would make me more happy ! They are both hooked up so I can alternate and compare. So far the Polk blows the DQ setup away. As for blending... the DQ setup blends better but nowhere near the lower tunes or the volume. To me with such a bright top end the mains need the bass to balance out. I¡¯ll keep switch as it¡¯s just a button on and off?

I want to weigh in. I¡¯m running 2 pairs of DQ-10s, 2 DQ-1w¡¯s through a LP-1 powered by 2 MC2205 for the DQ-10s and 2 MC2100 McIntosh amps. All of which have been professionally recapped to spec.
When I listen I couldn¡¯t be happier with the sound.
The quality of the sound is incomparable
I tried B&W powered 12¡±, went back to the Dahlquist. The ability to fine tune the sound of any recording using the LP-1 and the richness of the overall sound is, to my ears, wonderful. If you decide to go with the recap it won¡¯t take long for you to say money well spent.

Re: DQ LP1 and DQ-1w

Dave - what you describe here is exactly my system ( 2 10's,? 2 DQ 1W's one their sides puts the 10's at a great listening level, and an LP1). I'm using two Hafler DH500's to power the 10's, and an Adcom 555 (the orignal Nelson Pass design, not later versions) for the subs. Why these amps? They were cheap and are good. Plain and simple. I don't require more.?

If I que up the last track from Hans Zimmers "The Dark Knight" and turn it up, the entire neighborhood trembles in fear.

Re: DQ LP1 and DQ-1w

Sounds like an epic setup. Well executed.

Re: Has Anyone Used GR-Research To Analyze/recommend Upgrades To DQ-10s?

I have three sets of Bozak symphonies .?
The dq10¡¯s now have better mid and high end, and powered sub equal or better bass too. Bozaks mint ones can be had for 1k. I¡¯ve spent prob 2k , reforming woofer, upgrading xo¡¯s, recapping mx1, lp1, two subs, sub power amps etc..I use a 200 wpc Mac for both speakers. I¡¯m afraid to push them over 85 dB because no idea where I can find replacements for mids, tweeter or mid woofers which surrounds crack..( I keep them lubricated). So I have tons of backup Bozak drivers. Have to decide if to find another dahlquist setup or just be happy with Bozaks as I have been since 1970¡¯s?

Re: Has Anyone Used GR-Research To Analyze/recommend Upgrades To DQ-10s?

Don¡¯t do it! There are plenty of online discussions about the DQ-10. As well as upgrade recommendations. Refoam surrounds if needed, recap and replace resistors. You will have to go with the electrolytic for the 80uf unless you have somewhere to mount a beer can. It¡¯s not a difficult restoration. If you don¡¯t feel comfortable, Reynard does an excellent job but you will pay for it. Bottom line to the DQ-10 in my opinion is that if you bring it back to specks you will never regret the time or the money. Hope this helps?

Do you have the part number for the Burr-Brown op amps? I've got the technical skills to change them, the issue for me centers around selecting the correct op amps especially in light of the limited capability of the LP1 transformer.

Hi Dave,

I love your idea of setting the DQ-10's on top of the DQ-1W's.
May I trouble you for a picture of your speakers please?

Re: DQ LP1 and DQ-1w

Nope not implying that at all. The mx1 only drives one sub. The lp1 provides so much more like two subs, freq crossover selection and vol levels. I properly redone lp1 is superior to mx1. My point was neither the mx1 or lp1 used with dahlquist subs can¡¯t come close to the powered subs by good manufactures. I¡¯ve spent 1000.00 on two dahlquist subs, mx1 recapped, lp1 redone...and in the end I sell all the DQ subs and xo because a single Polk 12¡± 300w sub adds deeper, tighter bass at a fraction of the cost.?

The LP-1 looks fine, but I'm considering doing an upgrade. I contacted Regnar and they will do a rebuild which includes new Burr-Brown op amps for $320. The pricing seems high for such a simple circuit.

Looking thru the internet, the DYI upgrades seem to center around recapping and gold RCS jacks.

Any advice or recommendations?
