Re: Can I use a 2m radio with DINAH to set up Allstar access for a local repeater?

You may want to check the FCC rules,? Linking Via VHF is- or was against the rules. I have not boned up on the FCC rules for about 10 years, but I believe links had to be above 222 mhz and previous to that above 432 mhz. By definition it would be a RF link..
?
It is also or was against the rules to control a repeater on VHF via signaling- (Touch Tone)
?
That VHF rig would have to identify according to Identification protocols also in the rules.? Easy for a Dinah attached to a Raspberry Pi.?
?
About 25+ years ago ICOM came out with a Dual band 25 watt FM radio. I believe it was a 7210... It had the ability to cross band repeat and it had frequency agility. I bought the 1st one at the ARRL National Convention. Then subsequently wrote an article in QST regarding how to set up the rig to use it as a remote base, as the owners manual was terse in that regard. I explained it in great detail.? You could set up a input on UHF and transmit out on VHF and change VHF frequency? and offsets, even PL, etc.? The problems was the "mechanism" to do it could be reversed to use VHF as an input and therefore controlling output frequency from VHF via Touch Tones. was against the rules. The EDITORS at QST required a caveat stating so, and there was a rumor the FCC pulled the certification on the radio because it could be setup to violate rules and regs out of the box. Something they didn't dive into when the radio was sent for certification.? The radio was only sold a short time after my article was published in QST... The exact reason they quit selling the radio in the USA was never uncovered.
I still have mine, and the UHF final brick is blown. I have a new one to install, but it's one of those - one of these days repairs.. I really should set it up and as long as it's UHF in and VHF out I'll be fine.. My 50 foot tower is only at 20 feet. I installed a wall bracket on the barn but it's been raining so I have not finished the tower. Temperature right now is 37 degrees. I'm not doing anything this morning, but I'm not motivated to get the rest of that tower in the air. Besides yesterday winds were above 30mph. It will be done by Sunday however.

Re: Can I use a 2m radio with DINAH to set up Allstar access for a local repeater?

I have a node on a repeater using a remote radio and I set it to duplex=0 that way there is no ID coming from the node and the club repeater folks are happy about that.? I also did a noununct setting of one to do away of the courtesy tones on the node. Now the issue your having with the repeater in a loop issue can be resolved by adjusting the rxondelay setting in the simple USB menu.

I would also add that the node radio will send the repeater ID and courtesy tone down the network. Some nodes don't allow this traffic. Best way is to make the repeater dumb and allow the node to do the ID and tone.

There is a local repeater without Allstar access, and we'd like to enable that without adding anything at the repeater site.? We are trying to set up a VHF rig with a DINAH, so the Allstar audio would be sent to the repeater.? The repeater audio would be received into the Allstar node by the radio.

We attempted it, but the repeater starts looping a transmit/receive cycle as soon as the TX is released.? So it sits quietly, receives audio ok, but as soon as we try transmitting via the DINAH node, the repeater keeps cycling.

Is there a way to do this, or are we just missing something basic?

Adjust the radio itself.

?

Re: how to set a ctcss tone when using dinah

You set up CTCSS in the radio that DINAH is connected to.? Thr radio combines CTCSS with squelch to create a composite squelch signal.

Re: Changing Freg

You reprogram the frequency in the radio that DINAH is connected to.

What radio is your Dinah plugged into?

For me, it’s a Kenwood TM-V71A, and I just tune the VFO.

Re: Strange behaviour when dinah connected to pi

Try wrapping your hand around the USB cable (if not directly plugged into the Pi) or the radio cable leading into the DINAH, for 5-10 minutes and see if your Pi behaves itself.?? I had issues with that and the addition of a ferrite cleaned it right up.??? And this was interfacing to a DR-135 on an external antenna, not an HT that might have been transmitting too close.

I figured since the DINAH does not have a radio inside of it, it wouldn't be as much of an issue.?

Did you make your own cable to go between the Dinah and the FTM-500?

?

Page 70 of the operating manual, go through the DATA section.? You will need to select the DATA BAND.? Also set DATA SPEED for 1200 packet as that will leave pre-emph/de-emph ?enabled at the radio(turn it off in simple-usb-tune).

It has a 6 pin miniDIN packet connection so it should work fine with DINAH.

I have a ft-8100 that I would like to use as an allstar node for my local ham community. I am wondering if the device is compatible with that radio or if I will need to modify anything?

Thank you
