Query - any D-Star 1240-1300 DD networks still in use?
18
All: I'm working on a future story for my newsletter (https://zeroretries.substack.com) about the failed promise of the Icom ID-1 system. Part 1 I'm aware that there were (or still are) "ID-1 networks" in: * Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN * Dallas, TX * Vancouver, BC Anyone on this list from those groups? Any others that you know about? Any other significant use of ID-1s outside of Japan? Part 2 Any thoughts from this group about the "ID-1" capability in the Icom IC-9700 (1240-1300 MHz, inclusion of D-Star "DD" mode)? Part 3 Does anyone here have any contacts within Icom relevant to the ID-1? Thanks, Steve Stroh N8GNJ -- Steve Stroh stevestroh@... Editor Zero Retries Newsletter - https://zeroretries.substack.com

Query - any D-Star 1240-1300 DD networks still in use? Yes
We put in about 5-6 DD Mode “repeaters”/nodes in Minneapolis/St Paul to support database application access at scale for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in around 2007. It worked well. The range was excellent and web type apps ran fine. The point to point nature of the protocol was a limitation. We had multiple stations on ID-1s via Icom “repeater” nodes that needed to reach our data trailer. KD8GBL came up with an idea to use DNAT- and use multiple /24 addresses blocks- so four ID-1s could reach one ID-1 on the database. DNAT ran on a Linux box on the Ethernet on the “repeater.” We had up to three uplink ID-1s in the data trailer, each feeding an Icom “repeater” on a building rooftop. (Having the database and “repeaters” co located was not possible). We found the system reliable and interference free. In no way a failure. The protocol needs an update to allow meshing. We did not find the linking feature of D-Star DD (via the Internet, callsign routing etc.) to be useful and bypassed it. DD Mode was complex and widely misunderstood as an Internet /ISP solution and does not support full duplex well so was not useful for video or VoIP. The ID-1 is semi mysterious and acts like an Ethernet bridge. But for web disaster database apps it is still in use as our backup. We routinely got 10 mile range on an Omni antenna DD-1 to an Icom node Erik NY9D www.14567.org

New Hybrid Repeaters
Any updates on a timeframe for release of the new hybrid dual mode DSTAR repeaters?

Adjustment Software?
The service manual for the ID-1 says that you adjust its frequency to spec using some "Adjustment Software". Is this an actual thing? Where can I get it? (I have the operating software, there does not seem to be any way to do adjustments from that). Thanks Ken (KE2N)

IC09700 Dstar, pressing Mike causes the repeater link message to repeat
OK, I'm at a loss here, I have set up my new IC-9700 for DSTAR, and when press the mike key I get the message repeater linked message. On the IC-92AD after you link, you push the CW button for a few seconds to get to cqcqcq. How do you do it on an IC-9700? Tnx, Tom KT4XN

I see that there have been a few conversations regarding win 10 x64 and Id1 drivers, has there ever been any resolution? I have a new machine and the ID1 drivers won't install. Any help greatly appreciated AL M KF5SMH

Buy a spare D-STAR controller?
Not sure who needs a spare D-STAR controller, but HRO is having a huge sale on the ID-RP2C controller with the RS-RPC3 G3 software for only $169.95! Sale ends 8/31/2020. Maybe they are just trying to reduce stock. Not long ago, they had a sale on D-STAR modules, which I don't see on their site anymore. I have no affiliation with HRO, I just shop there. :) 73, Tom de KC9ONY

IP camera over ID-1?
2
I was looking at a system diagram pic on the ICOM site: https://www.icomamerica.com/en/products/amateur/dstar/dstar/default.aspx Scroll down to: Five Examples of Having Fun with D-STAR or go to: http://www.icomamerica.com/en/products/amateur/dstar/dstar/dstar_large.aspx In the upper right of that diagram, they show an IP camera feeding directly into an ID-1. Has anyone tried that? 73, Tom de KC9ONY
