DD Mode on G2 Gateway Question
2
We moved one of our DD mode repeater sites from our home made Linux/DNAT/DD-WRT back end to a stock G2 Gateway. Our legacy normal setup allows any to any and one to many on ID-1 as each ID-1 has a unique subnet. On our system, we either use a static IP or have DHCP. On the G2 server in DD Mode, what IP address is assigned to an ID-1? Does the repeater have one? Does it matter if the G2 server is online or offline to the G2 trust server? Our application requires perhaps 4 ID-1s to communicate to one ID-1 at our finish line, all of which are in direct RF range of the repeater site. We can of course use “bent pipe” mode on the repeater, but this would require pairs of radios.

Ham Radio Now Announces Kickstarter Campaign for 2014 ARRL/TAPR DCC (Digital Communications Conference) in Austin, TX
Ham Radio Now Announces Kickstarter Campaign to Attend & Record Videos of 2014 ARRL/TAPR DCC (Digital Communications Conference) in Austin, TX. Gary, KN4AQ of ARVN & Ham Radio Now produced high quality video of the ARRL/TAPR DCCs (Digital Communications Conference) in 2008 and 2009 (released on DVD), and 2011, 2012 and 2013 (released on high-definition streaming video). The videos covered every talk, including the Saturday banquet "keynote" and the Sunday Seminar, usually a four-hour "deep dive" into a single subject. The videos have been an invaluable resource for hams who weren't able to attend the sessions, and even for hams who were there in person and wanted a review. Gary, KN4AQ is based in North Carolina. Last year, he conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to cover both his expenses to travel to the 2013 ARRL/TAPR DCC (Digital Communications Conference) in Seattle and produce & make available on-line video of the entire DCC including all sessions. The year Gary is conducting another Kickstarter campaign this year to cover his expenses to attend the 2014 DCC in Austin, TX and record & produce the entire DCC again. Please help TAPR & Ham Radio Now by contributing to Gary's Kickstarter campaign at the link below: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/860504337/hamradionow-video-of-the-2014-arrl-tapr-dcc/pledge/new More information about the DCC is at: www.tapr.org/dcc Thanks for contribution to the Ham Radio Now DCC Kickstarter campaign and look forward to seeing many of you at the DCC.

Unable to establish connection
15
Perhaps someone here can point me in the correct direction. I have an ID1 and am trying to get it setup for DD, I have setup the static ip with the correct information, the cs settings are correct I believe, I have the wireless connection disabled, and the LAN connection enabled. Everytime I tune the radio to the dedicated DD repeater as soon as I turn the TX INH off the unit starts transmitting and receiving wildly, red and green lights going haywire. I have gotten to try to ping the gateway 10.0.0.1 and what I get back is reply from my static address and destination host is unreachable, packets= 4 sent, 4 received, 0 lost. I have tried almost everything except dynamite, hopefully someone here can show the dummy what is up. It should be noted that this is also a new repeater system also, so I guess I am asking could it be on the repeater end and not in my equipment. Like incomplete or faulty DHCP information? Thanks in advance Al KF5SMH

Unable to establish connection- not easy
In our experience with a dozen systems in real world huge events, DD mode is very frustrating to set up, but has remarkable real world performance. It is a simple Ethernet encapsulated in callsigns. But it is not plug and play. We use dedicated “lab” laptops all stripped down as most security measures will stop the packet flow unless you add these on after it is working J A furious blinking of lights and flashing of callsigns (esp. the repeater call sign) on the ID-1 is a good indication, is it usually indicates you have an RF path. Bad RF hardware (connectors, and those tall consumer grade antennas with the plastic joints) are an extremely common failure mode. Assume they are bad at all times unless actually tested with a SWR bridge. They last 2-3 years on commercial sites max. PC – To start with, strip everything down to basics. Static IP. Same subnet (but not the same address) and mask as the repeater. Check your call signs and RPT1, RPT2 etc. settings. Some of these are case sensitive and character position sensitive. No firewall(s). NO DHCP. Straight piece of wire to the ID-1- no NAT firewalls, routers, hubs, VLANs etc. No 802.1Q. No other traffic on the link or it will saturate. Turn off ALL other interfaces on the PC- Internet, wireless etc. Then reboot the PC to clear the routing tables. I have seen it work with and without a default gateway on the ID-1 interface – but do not have one up to the Internet. Double check your settings on ipconfig. It is interesting when there is a good RF path and the ID-1 can “see” the other end, then and only then does layer 2 come up- all the arps etc. Usually it is better to just ping the radio, vs devices behind it. http://www.14567.org/software.html

National Hurricane Net Test Saturday Morning Using D-STAR & D-RATS
----- Forwarded Message ----- To: ga_dstar@... Sent: Thursday, May 29, 2014 1:13 PM Subject: [ga_dstar] National Hurricane Net test saturday morning Just a reminder that the annual test of the National Hurricane Net will be conducted this Saturday. This is the first year that D-STAR and D-RATS will be a part of the reporting for the test. Our Georgia D-STAR repeaters that are normally linked to REF030B will be linked to REF002A between 10:00a and 12:00 noon on Saturday for the test. Other repeaters around the southeast coast will also be linked to REF002A for the test. Any D-STAR repeaters in Georgia that can be linked manually to REF002A for the test is appreciated. There will be a Net Control Station during the voice net. As we do with the Southeast D-STAR Weather Net on Sunday evenings, we will call for Quick Key check-ins by state. Each station will then be contacted to provide their report. For the test, we are looking for actual local conditions at your location. Please use the reporting format found in the document in the Files section, WX4NHC Reporting Form. For those wishing to submit a report by D-RATS, a special ratflector has been setup for this net, drat.seweather.net. Reports can be submitted in D-RATS via Messaging addressed to Net Control as the Destination Callsign using a special form, NHC_surfacewx. To use this form, copy the two files, nhcsurfacewx.xml and nhc_surfacewx.xsl into the Forms folder in your D-RATS application on your computer. Alternately, you can import the xml file as a new message template. The files are also found in Files section of this group. We appreciate all stations who participate in this net test to demonstrate the value and flexibility of D-STAR. Thanks, John WB4QDX

Video over DD- Not full duplex
Two way LAN type streaming video conferencing won’t work well this is a 90 kbps half duplex link with some extra overhead. We did a test with the free MS app- the link saturates quickly. But you can crank the data rate way down and use it for a remote camera. You could possibly find an app that works say over satellite and is compressed and rate limited. If you need voice- the radio has a lovely voice mode J Erik NY9D www.14567.org

During the last prototype layout of the UDR, it occurred to me that there are over 2 million Raspberry Pis, so if we used the same connector as the Pi, it would have the following advantages. Pi users would have access to AMBE Software development would be in parallel with UDR development Other cards made for the Pi could potentially be used on the UDR Jonathan Naylor, G4KLX, has adapted his Dummy Repeater to work with the DV3000 on the Pi. This let's hams talk over the D-STAR network using their computer instead of a radio. He also built several wav / AMBE conversion utilities for testing and comparison of different vocoders. Jonathan joined us at Hamvention for the release of the DV3000, where we sold over 30 units. The AMBE3000 Chip supports vocoding for: D-STAR - Supported NOW by G4KLX DMR and dPMR Yaesu Fusion P25 Phase 2 Check out the DV3000DS http://nwdigitalradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/DV3000DS.pdf or go to the PRODUCTS http://nwdigitalradio.com/products page to buy online.
