Re: I am learning but still so lost.

Drew

The connection between controller and computer is parallel or preinter cable, same going from control box to machine.? I got a photocopied booklet english mixed with chinese.? Very difficult to follow.? Sorry, I live in Texas near Lubbock.? I would be up for a phone call , if you would be interested.

Thanks for your reply

My machine is a chinese 30/60 , I think.? The motots will lock up when I plug in the parrallel cable.? I am useing linuxcnc and have bnot gotten the correcet setting put into the software.? Woulod you be avaliable for a phone call maybe I could explain better.? Thanks for answering back.

I am trying to run linuxcnc but have not been able to get the correct settings.? Do you recommend adifferent software?? Thanks for your reply.? Would you care to talk on the phone if I called?

Re: I am learning but still so lost.

I am overwhelmed by the response.??? I just ordered 3 stepper motor drivers as I had none extra.? I am trying to get something working and then tackle the Chinese machine.? i was also supersized that not as many were not familiar with LINUXCNC.? I think I got a handle4 on it now.
The Chinese machine is connected by serial port.? The one I am building is connected by USB.? I found a utube film about my Chinese
4 Axis USB CNC Controller Board.? I think maybe I got something glimmering in the sunset of knowledge that might help me.? Give me a few days until my driver boards for my motors and let me hook it togather.? Then maybe I can get the software to work for me.? Just curious as to what you guys are using.? I am located in the Panhandle, about 10 miles East of Lubbock,Texas.? I have not been able to Russell up much help around here.? I assure you I definetly need it.? If pictures or screen shots are helpful, I will furnish them on request.? Once again Guys thanks and I look forward to more information.

Re: I am learning but still so lost.

Is it a serial cable or a parallel cable? I don't know of any common serial interfaces to LinuxCNC, How many pins are on the cable? Serial is something like 8 pins and parallel is 25 pins. Do you have any documentation on the interface? How about the URL to where you bought it. Like Andy said, if your close I can stop over to see if we can get it going.

Well, I don't know much about LinuxCNC, but if your motors are locking up that means your drivers are working as they should. I have a 6040 router (among other cnc machines), but I use Mach3.

Are you in Florida, by any chance?

Re: Easy CNC Guides Needed

This will help:

Re: Easy CNC Guides Needed

I have been using Geomagic (3D CAD) for 12 years now and it works just fine. But I'd not recommend it to you for creating models.

I bought a few cheap 3D CAM programs and they all turned out to be cheap in function and shaky in the g-code they produced. And we are talking hours of machine time that a 2D program would run in tens of minutes at the most for an identical part.

I discovered Cut2D desktop. It will do 90% or more of the CNC jobs I have and that includes making model engines that run. Most CNC work is still 2D or 2 1/2D and Cut2D can be used to draw the part or draw out engraving jobs and then generate the G-Code. It has yet to generate bad code. It will accept DXF files which many CAD programs will generate. It costs around $150 for the simpler software and that is plenty good enough for a lot of machine shops.

When my Geomagic finally dies due to 3D Systems ignorance, I'll switch to Fusion 360 while not as easy to use as Geomagic, has a lot more to offer.

I'd find an old Xp (DON'T PUT ON INTERNET) Or win7 32 bit, something we parallel port, ?mach 3 hobby lic runs 150 lines gcode, and if that wont run current stepper driver, buy gecko g540 4 axis.
I have xp, win7 box I'd give for shipping costs.

I have a MaxNC which doesn't work. ?Last time it failed I went to the seller and their repairs cost a lot and did not last. ?Even simply doing precision drilling on some grade 8 bolts for my brother ended in none of the motors working. ?Since factory repair costs too much I've gathered home repair parts to completely replace factory electric hardware and hopefully the software. But I don't know what to do with the software to get it up and running in spite of seeing many YouTube videos that address the subject but not in enough detail.

Does anyone know how to set up and run an Arduino with CNC shield hooked up to 4 wire steppers? ?Is that under Windows or Linux? ?I want to set it up on two computers, a Windows running Fusion 360 (which is free for hobbyists) and generate G-codes. Then transport them to my garage to run on a Raspberry Pi to run the CNC machine. The Fusion 360 works. ?One problem is i don 9;t understand Linux enough. ?So when I saw online instructions saying I need to flash the Arduino, I had to ask what that meant. ?When I found out it was sending an Arduino binary to the Arduino board, I don't know how to ask Linux to do that, or any of the other steps needed to run a file of G-codes.

So, how do I proceed? ?Thank you.?

Re: Restoring a desktop CNC

That is not a Linux task. Use Arduino software, IIRC called Arduino IDE. There is plenty of info on the Arduino site.

Other than using the Raspberry Pi, I have done this, just on an old windows machine. Make sure your drivers match the current requirements of your steppers. The little square plug in drivers on the GRBL shield are likely too small. The hardware and software for 3D printing may be useful to you as well. Look up RAMPS 1.4.

What your trying to do is possible, with the right hardware.

Re: UPDATE - Easy CNC Guide Needed

I'll second that - it's easy to use and effective. I also use DraftSight from Dassault Systemes which I run under Win7 64-bit. It's a professional system with a free version - like it lots.

Try free, "librecad", or it's commercial version QCad. It works
on Linux, Mac, and Winders. I hear you can now get a CAM add
on to their commercial version. No docs come with the free
version, but lots of tutorials on youtube. Simplest, easy to
use CAD package I've seen so far. Before I forget, it's 2.5-D.

Mark,

I have been using CamBam for a few?months on my CNC machine. ?CamBam is an entry level CAD and CAM program.? It costs $149 dollars.?

But, before you buy it you need to install it on your?computer to make sure it works as expected.?? They allow you to use the program 40 times.? The company has good?training videos on their website.

Best regards

Fusion 360 is a no-go then.

I’d suggest SketchUp, but you can’t export files from the free version.

www.tinkercad.com might work for you, they almost shut it down until AutoDesk gave them some cash. It’s geared towards 3D printing, but you can import/export .stl & dxf files that you can then convert to gcode with a CAM package, eg CamBam.
