Re: 22" travel single axis suggestions

Good questions.

Deviation vertically is the critical direction.?

For expensive, I'll put a $500 budget on it.

Thanks for the suggestion of the supported rail.

Define ‘expensive’, especially in the context of no deviation.

Supported rail is pretty cheap these days:

Bolting a couple of those to something reasonably stiff might work.

Considering creating a special application machine that would require a single axis with 22" of travel. It will not have to carry more than 10 lbs, but needs to have less than .0005" or better .00025" deviation under the spindle through out the entire travel.

Not worried about how to drive it mechanically or electronically. Just looking for ideas on the least expensive way to build physical parts of the stage.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Re: DXF to Centroid AcornCNC

Yes, it is time for all to move from Mach3, but have you tried Mach4 with the PoKeys?? It is very also very easy to setup and it has the conversational programming.

Hi Guys,

I have a Video at this website that may be of interest.

I have been a Mach3 user for many years, but its time to upgrade.

Yes, the Atlas Craftsman lathe group moved a few months ago, and it has been a mostly positive experience. One issue was that groups.io was not able to get all the files and photos content off the Yahoo group, so somebody that had a full backup had to go and cherry pick the missing files.
Many of the ones that didn't come across SEEMED to be there, but the contents of the file were empty.

But, now that we've switched, it is all running much better than with Yahoo. If you read the info on Yahoo, they pretty much declare they are giving minimal (or less) maintenance and support to the groups.

Re: Tech Shop goes out of business

It is true. They ran out of cash to the extent they couldn't even reorganize under Chapter 11; it's doors shut and a trustee to liquidate and pay the final bills.

I know a bit more than what is in the press releases as a small investor since 2008. I had a bit of money at the time, and wanted to encourage their expansion into my neck of the woods (Seattle). My investment was structured as a 10 year loan at 10% interest, with a perk of free lifetime membership at any shop. Ultimately, they never built a shop close to me; and the only time I set foot in one was a tour of the facility in Chandler, AZ one afternoon (I literally drooled when I saw their waterjet). Guess that's all I'll ever get.

It became apparent about a year and a half ago that the writing was on the wall. I was under heavy pressure to convert my loan into an equity position; but I refused because they just never seemed like they could get their act together. Their first CEO came from Kinko's, and he apparently put them in a big hole by having the shops open 24/7. They also spent too much time trying to become a franchiser (the founder always compared them to 24 Hour Fitness). The next guy tried to turn it around, but it was apparently too far gone.

I didn't lose any money on the deal - I just missed out on a couple of payments that would have been interest. I probably made out about as well as if I'd kept the money in a savings account. I'm sure others weren't as fortunate.

It's too bad. I always wanted them to succeed. I was seriously thinking about relocating to Arizona in retirement so I could have access to the Chandler facility. It was clean, well-equipped, and busy when I saw it. I preferred it to the various makerspaces I've seen; but I suppose they are the only alternative now. I have a decently-equipped home shop, but damn! I wish I could have had a turn at that waterjet.

Dave

Tech Shop goes out of business

It seems that Tech Shop has gone out of business nationally.

Thanks for that Sam ... I think I have decided to take the plunge and
get a Linuxcnc box working ASAP. This gives the confidence that I can
probably get away with the simple interface and not worry initially
about coprocessors like the 7I90 board. I've a few ITX boxes with fast
boards in which had XP on and have now been replaced with RaspberryPi's
rather than W7+ :)

Sounds like you have the same distraction from getting jobs done. I've
three grand-kids who are reducing time available for other work :)

My concern with Mach4 is the fact that 'commercial use' is something of
a can of worms. Obvious for commercial shops a full licence for every
machine can be lost in the running costs, but smaller shops doing the
odd paid for job? A bit like waiting for Oracle to come around looking
at your use of MySQL :(

The M16 is a breakout board specially designed to lathes:
An alternate solution, but the pokeys57cnc expanded board is easier to
wire and no import costs. Just been told that it will not work with
existing Mach3 licenses when using for lathe side ... that is not clear
on the website!

Checkout this controller using it:
My package can handle up to 5 drivers
but that 5 channel board is no
longer available hence looking for an alternative :(

Not sure where is the bast place to ask as most of the lists I frequent
for CNC are specific to a single option. I've got an Orac and a Compact8
Lathe both of which are running nicely from the Mach3 Mill computer, but
as yet nothing is hooked up to the encoder and index pulse signals.

I was going down the path of Eding USBCNC, but the current interface
boards are a lot more expensive than the original USB boards. PlanetCNC
offers a similar board to the earlier Eding one and prices look good
even adding the extra bit for the software licence. The Pokeys boards
look nice price wise, but I'm not sold on Mach4 having been using Mach3
on the mill for years. Does any other software take advantage of the
Pokeys hardware? Then we get back to LinuxCNC which I keep downloading
but never getting much further along than that despite having a couple
of other interfaces that are getting good responses about.

Nothing stands out as the ideal solution for a lathe setup like Mach3 is
for the mill, or am I missing something?
Yea - just put an independent CNC control on it and forget Mach.

Plenty of choice for lathe controls on aliexpress.

LinuxCNC definitely does lathes very well. You pretty much
have to have a "controller" rather than just a breakout
board, or you will be limited to low spindle speeds when
threading. Mesa and Pico Systems (that's me) both have
controllers that are suitable.
It is looking like this is the way forward and I do have a 7I90HD I
picked up a couple of years back, but wiring 50 way ribbon cables is a
pain. I'm a RaspberryPi user which while not ideal for LinuxCNC is a
further tangent, so a BeagleBone controller is also an option once I
make the mental move. I've been using Linux on the desktop for over 10
years so that is not a problem, just the 'controller' options.

See for a conversion using my boards.
