sBitx --> Transverter for 2m/70cm SSB/CW 33
Finally took the plunge and bought one of those Ukranian 2m/70cm Transverters -- with the fancy MOSFET so it is supposed to do 10W on 2m. Eventual goal is to learn something about the linear translation satellites. Got it all connected up this afternoon. The attenuator inside the unit is way off from what they said it would be -- I have the sBitx at about 19% power level to avoid overdriving the transverter. I can't find my "normal" sBitx mic so having to use a CB amplified mic and a rube-goldberg set of connections.... but it works!! Made first 2m SSB and CW contact EVER in my life to friend who has a superb VHF / UHF setup about 11 miles away -- this with a homebrew 3 element beam made years ago from welding wire, laying between bannister and chair. The sBitx worked perfectly. The transverter only has "vox" and wouldn't stay "in" during SSB voice -- but others have added a ptt connection before and I should be able to also, since I already have a "send" output on my sBitx. The eventual goal is to try SATELLITES. But I have to crawl before I walk..... Gordon KX4Z??

Another issue with cosmetic version 2
When I revert to the original firmware on the ubitx v6 it works correctly. I forgot to mention that the button for USB was not a choice. It cycles between LSB and CW only. I have put it back to stock and will check on the versions mentioned. Thanks John N4HNO

West Central Florida TECHCON
The West Central Florida Section of the ARRL hold a tiny ("cozy") technology conference every year for about the last ten. I'm supposed to be there today, and one of my talks is on the "maturing sBitx." Except I have partially torn a calf muscle (lateral head of the gastrocnemius to be exact) and can only make it a few steps on crutches!! Impressively painful injury and boy! does it reduce your productivity when it is a huge obstacle merely to move across the room! For the next few weeks, I doubt I can even make it back to my soldering iron (upstairs). Nevertheless they have arranged a private zoom channel and there is hope I'll be able to give the updated talk, later today. https://arrlwcf.org/wcf-special-events/wcftechconference/ Hope this works!! I was VERY SURPRISED to find that the talk that I gave last year appears to be one of the most popular of that conference, with 2,900 views!! I hope I haven't said, and don't say, anything TOO dumb!! Yes, the sBitx is not an "icom" -- it is something much, much more for people like us! 73 Gordon KX4Z

DX range and bearings 3
DX-ATLAS is an atlas program that runs under Windows. Since we cannot use it under Linux on the sBit or zBit, I developed a flat-file PDF database of just over 375 places in the world that might be useful on these systems. Is there any interest in how users can develop their own customized version? If so, I will write up the details and make them available. Gerry Sherman Sent by the Windows 11 Thunderbird

ZBITX - Some questions 3
Hi, I was looking at the ZBITX schematic and had the following questions, so I thought I'd ask. 1. If there is no IQ approach, does this qualify as an SDR? 2. Can the stages be replaced with 2 NE612s? 3. Is this only doing audio IF processing after a single conversation stage? What about selectivity? 4. Could this be done as a dual conversion? 5. And drop the crystals to 110592kHz? Just curious that's all. So thought I'd ask. Happy to stand corrected. Best 73 Ravi/M0RVI

sBitx was working, now multiple issues 5 #sBITX_v3 #sBitx
I have an sBitx v3 that was purchased assembled. It worked fine until yesterday - when I turned it on and attempted to tune my antenna, there was no output. I rebooted the Pi, same issue. I also noticed a constant "clicking" noise, at maybe 3 or 4 Hz on most bands. Finally, when I attempt to tune - it tunes only 50 KHz and then it stops. It worked fine the day before. The only thing possibly different is this - when I shut it down daily, I will close the software and then shut the Pi down via Raspbian. Then I shut off the sBitx. However I forgot to do the latter - the sBitx had power to it all night without the Pi running. That's the only thing that I can possibly connect to the fact that I now have an sBitx that is not working as it should. I'm quite disappointed, as I was really enjoying operating ft8 with it. Ideas??? Thank you in advance, John N2LCX

Sleep/Power Off Display 10
I’m planning on leaving the sBitx powered up but with the app closed. I’ve got VNC and VPN setup to remotely launch the application for when I want to remotely use the software. while it’s hooked up and not in use, I’d like for the display to be turned off. I’ve tried using xset, setterm, and tvservice but none of those will get the display to either sleep or power down. I’ve not used the Raspberry Pi screen before so am I missing something obvious?

6.1 you mentioned works
I tried the one labelled 6.1 master and it works. It looks like the original screen. I really liked the larger font on the cosmetic version but I noticed it said 0.1 alpha so I guess it was a work in progress. Thanks all John N4HNO

N8ME cosmetic mods 5
I had a used v6 with a bad encoder. I replaced it and tuning improved. I tried the N8ME Cosmetic mods hex file. I like it but couldn’t get it to calibrate. The rx frequency was always off by 2 kHz. Any suggestions? 73s John

New uBitx 8
I just purchased and received my first uBitx, and I have a question. Does it take regular paddle input on one of the 3.5mm jacks? I changed the CW type from paddle to either iambic A or B, and nothing changes, it only acts like one side is working, primarily dit. I have three paddles I use on my other radios, and all work as expected on those, but not on the uBitx. I get the same reaction from the radio if I plug in the microphone supplied to the left hand 3.5mm jack, and use its PTT key in CW mode. -- -- J R Parrick (K0TBS) Si vis pacem, para bellum! Raduino desired 3
If anyone has a Raduino module (v3-v5) available, I could use one. I've a spare board but my spare rads are too stressed at this point and have gone to pasture. It doesn't have to have a Nano - that, I have. Let me know your terms, etc. Thanks. Ted K3RTA

No sbitx power to pi 18
I just received my sbitx v3 board only kit. After wiring up and powering on, I realized that the board wasn't powering the pi 4. Is this supposed to be, that the pi needs its own power source? If I use a proper power supply to the usb-c jack on the pi, all works fine. Any ideas as to what I need to look at? K8MCB -- Mike - K8MCB

Rtl-sdr auxiliary 2
So I believe that I purchased the last of the sBitx v3 boards! I have been considering what I would like to incorporate into the custom build. First, I intend to build a atu-100 ext into the unit, fairly straightforward. I was also thinking about adding an rtl-sdr v4 as an independent receiver for use as a panadapter, in order to view the entire band. My question is, can I, and if so, where would I tap the sbitx IF to feed a signal to the dongle? Also, I would like to have an option to have the rtl-sdr track the sbitx frequency, or operate independently. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions! -- Mike - K8MCB

How to fine tune the set frequency 5
uBitX 6 unit is a bit off frequency after I assembled it and transmitted with it first time. I set frequency to 7,255 Mhz (ECARS) on the display but had to move the frequency on the display a bit lower to 7.254.60 to center the band setting. Can i adjust it easily? Regards, WA4TPE

Question about GitHub drexjj/sbitx 4
I plan to buy a sBitx, which I would use with the 64Bit project. I guess when I have loaded the (current) p064.img file I find in the Raspberry SD card the Kernel, the Touch Display Support, the Applications. I suppose I will find files like "default_hw_settings_V3.ini" and "default_settings.ini" which I will be able to edit according to my own needs? This question may look silly but my knowledge of Raspberry is still quite basic. 73 - Pierre - FK8IH

A uBitx CW SideTone Volume Fix 5
We all seem to agree that the CW sidetone volume on the uBitx is way too loud. Here is what I did to address the issue. Looking at the uBitx v6 schematic, the CW sidetone passes through a series of 3 Resistor/Capacitor low pass filters to help smooth out the square wave signal from the synthesizer before injecting it into the audio stream. These filters can modified to reduce the level of the sidetone signal. I increased the values of resistors R251 and R252 from 1K to 4.7K (because that was the values I had on hand), this lowers the low pass filter frequency below the sidetone frequency which is around 700 Hz. With the 1K resistors, these two filters have a 3dB cutoff of about 1600 Hz, meaning that they are not attenuating the sidetone at all, just smoothing it. Swapping R251 and R252 out for 4.7K resistors lowers the 3dB cutoff to 340 Hz. This attenuates the signal in addition to smoothing it out. I estimate that this dropped the sidetone volume by about 6dB (1/4 of previous volume). It is still a bit louder than I would like, but it is a huge improvement. -- 73, Steve - KA0SM

Please help. I blew up my sBITX. I am fixing it, little by little but I am stuck now. 12
Hello all. I bought a sBITX v3 new at beginning of December. I used it a few times. I had an accident where power cable became spliced by sharp metal on a rental car while I was setting up to activate a POTA park. In a hurry to get back on the air, I accidentally reversed the power wires after repairing them and thus blew up my then 3 week old sBITX. It had no power, no PI display. No anything. 10A Fues inline did not blow, but reversed polarity "fried" the radio. I am not an electronics or RF expert, and am fairly new to HAM radio. I did read through the other messages here in the group and did find two other people that have reversed polarity their systems and I read the suggestions to fix their boards. Unfortunately both seem to have stopped reporting progress and/or have abandoned fixing the sBITx. I have it now partially working! What I have fixed so far: 5V flag was not 0v. I replaced the 5V supply with the new “recommended" version (setting the voltage properly before putting it in the sBITX). I also tried the RC/Drone 5v “BLOCK” that was also recommended. Both work the same. Replaced the diode right under the 5V supply board. It had blown, probably doing its job and partially saving the system. I now get proper 5v flag and the system boots. I have visually looked at most parts, there does not seem to be any visable damage, nothing seems to be running “hot” at idle. Voltages look correct in the places I that I can measure them with my volt meter. RTC did not work properly from factory, and the system time was always incorrect at boot. I think the RTC board may have been shorting out on the toroid below it, they were touching. I remove the board and put electrical tape under it and replaced the RTC board back in position. Now the PI keeps time between power cycles. Problems still to solve: 7mhz band works great. I can FT8 all over the world. Waterfall is clean, audio is clean. Frequency seems to be off a few 100hz but it seemed that way from new but I now have to operate in RIT. The BIG issue is now relating to operating above the 7mhz band. There is horrible RX noise everywhere. I am not able to receive anything on those bands. I have not tried TX above the 7mhz band. Noise is present with both 5V regulators. I do not know what to do. I assume I have a damaged resistor or cap but I do not understand the band processing or why 40M works great and everything else is full of noise. Below is a link to a video of what it sounds/looks like. You will see the noise is not dependent on mode filters or RX gain and vol: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0edz9o3Q8U2fpqyXVDtmg8gXg I am limited in my knowledge and tools… but I think I am close to getting it fully running again. It has been a great learning experience on what is inside a radio. Replacement boards are out of stock, so that is not an option at the moment. Does anyone out there have suggestions on what I should look at next? What would be causing noise above 7mhz on the receive side? Your help is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you to all in this community! -Jerry
