Good morning all,
Just joined the group. I am considering purchasing a sBITX V2 but was wondering if the radio has the full WSJT-X and FLDigi applications installed and whether I could run them from the Linux 'home' page with this transceiver.? (I am a rank Linux rookie, but i have poked around at the entry level of a Raspberry Pi 3 with the HamPi suite of apps.)?
I mostly operate FT8 these days and I see that is well integrated in the sBITX. But I really also?like to run WSPR and also use the frequency calibration/analysis features in WSJT-X and FLDigi,
Thanks in advance . .?

FT8 works flawlessly from the basic SDR display. I don't use FT8 but it worked so well I made 3 contacts without intending to! Fldigi is present but I've not figured out how to get it working. There's so much help in this group that I expect to have it going soon.

Greg,
I have the v2 version.? I use WJST-X? with Ft8 For? Grid Tracker I just down the package and after a normal setup it Works great.
WJST-X is already installed, just have to look in the menu area.
The only bit of work is setting up the cat control, audio and PTT for the digital modes.
Used this info from Scott,

Strange, I checked all these settings, and they were all the defaults already except for the Capture level so there was nothing to change but that, unless I missed something.
The end result was rig control worked (wsjtx can change bands/modes) but I didn't see anything on the wsjtx waterfall.
I just double-checked.
So, is there a step missing in the above instructions?
Thanks!

What I am noticing is that for the 15 seconds where stations transmit the wsjtx spectograph display goes full scale across the board, and for the gap between the transmissions the signal falls to zero.? It's as if it's being heavily over-driven.
|
I always have to unload fldigi before loading WSJT.? Have you trid that?
|
Dave,
I have had that problem a couple if times.
Two possible causes I came across.
1. Accidentally run 2 sbitx.
2. The capture level on the output , was almost zero.. Don't know how it changes.? But for me this fixed the no rx audio

Dave,
The audio problems with WSJT-X most times seem to pop out of no where
Until a few days ago, it ran very well. Then a day later the rx audio disappeared. One time it was me , having clicked sbit twice. The others, unknown was the cause was. The solution for me is Shutdown. Run sbitx app then check output capture. Put it max.. Then I run WSJT-X and audio usually fine. Sometimes it appears lower on the scale but still ok. I then usually check the output capture level and many times it's only half way. So I crank it up while watching the rx audio? Level, and watch it go up as I move it up.
The odd times settings look ok but still no audio.
If so I do a clean reboot. and check it again..
I usually close fildigi before loading WSJT-X.? I have not seen where it made a difference but, less load on system.
Still a mystery why? Will keep plugging at it until I find a cure or a method to fix it ... I believe it's audio sharing, or some software issue, since the audio works perfect with the? sbitx app.
It's to bad sbitx does not have a a mode which allows other apps to use its audio directly if user has selected digital mode.? Or gives the app priority I presume it's currently doing a virtual share ??

Hello,
I dont own the SBITX, but have had software and audio problems with wsjtx many times. sometimes the audio drops out, or give a screen lockup issue,or it puts my ports where the mic is accessible by whistling but not thru my radios. I usually have to reboot with wsjtx.
My problem solver? JTDX. it loads, it runs and it works.Ive had the problems described with wsjx with windows, linux and MAC. course i dont run Windows anymore its been years, but the linux and MAC versions i have had similar issues.
Sometimes after installing wsjtx will come up with a warning window saying sound device not detected, . Sometimes i get "lost Audio" situation. Ive configured, ive eleted and reloaded, etc. thats why i dont do wstjx. i believe its really buggy with my equipment and computers.I have lenovo t430 thinkpad running ubuntu with 250mb harddrive and 8gigs of ram even.
?I can run SDRTRUNK, Airspy software, and some Powersoftware from ke9ns. it all works, most other digital software works on my laptop too.I believe its the wsjtx software on the PI. I had problems with wsjtx with my 4gb ram PI loading and running. deleted it and installed dragon OS raspberry PI version on the SD Card.Dragon OS has a boatload of Ham software preloaded.

David? Thanks for info.
I have run? jtdx on my Windows stuff and like it for reliability and it's Many extra features.
Unfortunately I have not found a good load for the buster 10 version which is running on our Sbitx radios. I guess a jtdx build and a Hamlib build would be needed.

Joe,
wsjtx has always been buggy to me . I run linux, MAC and raspberry PI 4 with dragon OS, also tried several other OS distributions for PI and never had any problems with JTDX.
The PI on ur SBITX should have ethernet connection. use the file manager to search and download jtdx . if Buster allows it. I was using Bullseye until i moved to other distributions for the PI. once i get it installed, i just went to the package manager and downloaded jtdx.. Dragon OS has this built in for the PI. and to configure the Sbitx software, shouldnt be too much of a problem.
SD cards are cheap. load them with various PI distros and experiment with them. With dragon OS i use rtl-sdrs plus sdrtrunk thru the PI to listen to p25 police traffic. I do this on My Saguaro from DZKITS.
I ported the main software onto the SD card with the different PI distro? even the pre installed wsjtx messes up. so its the wsjtx software.Might have to get into the config file and alter some of the setting? maybe go back to earlier versions? On my PI 400 wsjtx messes up quite a bit, but i also have jtdx installed on that SD Card and jtdx of course never has locked up or messed up.I use the older versions which have had some distance on working
just my take of all your software problems.
I used BalanEtcher to flash my SD cards but you can probably use the raspberry PI imager? on the raspberry PI website

You can also reduce the attenuation of the audio to the loopback. Change in sbitx_sound.c:
#define LOOPBACK_LEVEL_DIVISOR 8
to something like 4 or 2.

David? Thanks for the info.
I just received some 64 gig mics to experiment?with.? I will need to stick with the buster 10 distro which is on the sbitx radio.
I think I will need to download the hamlib which us modified for jtdx. My concern is the modified hamlib won't work with the sbitx app.
Maybe I should download the jtdx hamlib first. And I guess download and compile ? the jtdx pgm for Debian Buter 10. Would be nice if there was a compiled version.
Would have been great if they had included the install on the sbitx card.
The sbitx radio has an ethernet and wifi connections. I use a pi4 4gig inside the rig
I use BalanEtcher or rufus for image stuff

Joe,
Sounds good.
I just got rid of wsjtx .my own preference, and run jtdx. it seems to be easier to configure. might be a line of code describing the interaction of the digi software in a config file somewhere. replacing the the words wsjtx with jtdx or something. BUT, i would do it only after making a copy of your original SD card with software that came with the SBITX.
That way you can hack until the cows come home and dont have to worry about messing up your SBITX settings and such. All this talk about the SBITX, im going to have to pull the trigger and get one later.
I have 6 of the 64gb SD cards with various software loaded with different ham stuff like fldigi, jtdx, logger programs, and such.Dragon OS, Kali linux OS, Bullseye OS,Ubuntu,Fedora, and retroPI. ubuntu is the easiest to get ham distros downloaded from repositories ,unless you use Dragon OS. Dragon OS has a buttload of software for logging, digital modes like fldigi, wsjtx, jtdx, qsstv, and many more already written into the distribution.
I use my PI 400 with all the above software, but particularly like ubuntu, and dragon distros. I run digital modes on my PI 400 with Dragon OS .2 cables from the PI to my Ubitx. Then when tired of hamming and want to Shortwave listen or use a scanner for police calls, i insert the rtl-sdr along with my SDRPLAY receiver and use sdrtrunk, or some of the other many sdr receiver programs built in with Dragon OS.
I also know its not super accurate, like a spectrum analyzer, but i use my PI 400 with the SDRPLAY to analyze my transmitted signal off my QRP and higher powered rigs, using attenuators on the SDRPLAY input. then check for harmonics levels. just old time math to find the harmonics 2nd,3rd,4th and so on harmonics, and look for a signal where it shouldnt be.
?I know, everyone ,its not a spectrum analyzer but my stupid setup seems to work for me. And i have fun learning about filters and such.
Anyway, everyone, enjoy the software.Remember there is plenty of choices for base PI OSes. Im assuming the PI ,with software ,controls the parameters of the SBITX.
Anyway Joe,
Good luck on the SBITX with digimodes and maybe we can work each other. I like to work the warc bands since traditionally there is no contests on them. Just wide open spaces.30 meters,17 meters is my favorites, and non warc bands 80,15,10 meters.

I am a little reluctant to ask this: when you launch the full WSJTX software on the sBITX v2 and go to the settings screen, how to I lock in any changes I made(Like my call sign and Grid Locator)? The settings window seems slightly too long for the 7 inch screen and I suspect that there is an "OK" button at the bottom which I am not able see or click. I have run into this issue with a VNC version of the FT8 software and was never able to resolve the problem. I have tried moving the window around but still no view of the bottom of the settings screen. Every time I close out of the settings screen, I lose the updates. John Stockman, KC2THY

I always have to unload fldigi before loading WSJT.? Have you trid that?
Yes, that was what I called the 'step missing' in the instructions.?
It's now apparent that fldigi is capturing the audio output device so you have to terminate it before you can use wsjtx in the stand-alone way.??
The steps I followed after a clean reboot:
- Start the sBitx program using the icon on the desktop
- When Chromium starts, use the 'X' in its window title bar to close it
- Now you should be left with the 'Qt' interface of the sbitx program on the screen
- Hold Alt and Space together then pick 'Iconify' from the menu to put sBitx onto the system toolbar
- The 'sBitx' program is iconified but still running
- Open the copy of fldigi by clicking on its icon in the system toolbar
- Use the 'X' in its window title bar to close it
- Click on the Raspberry at the top left, open 'Sound and Video', click on 'wsjtx'
After doing this, the 'wsjtx' app is running in the traditional way.

Don't be reluctant to ask.? Chances are there are others on the list who don't know the answer and want to know as well.? In fact I am one of those people!
The document that comes with the radio says that this is the radio for tinkerers, so let's tinker!

I've been doing some googling.
Right here in this forum Ashhar wrote:
The big challenge is the screen real-estate. Neither wsjtx, flidigi nor js8call work on smaller screens. I just dont understand why this was not considered in the screen layout. This is why sbitx had to skip the wsjtx suite and implement ft8 on its own.
The js8call is a particularly bad offender. It needs four large text windows at once.
At the end of the day, all the digital text protocols need one place to type your own text and one area to see the incoming text. Remember the chat on irc?
Source:?/g/BITX20/message/94173?
Of course, he's taking about using the built-in screen.? If you want to add a screen with more resolution via HDMI, the situation is different.
This issue has been confirmed elsewhere.? The standard raspberry pi seven inch touchscreen has 800x480 resolution.? It's not a lot of pixels to work with by modern standards, and many of the standard programs for ham radio do not work in this size.?
So Ashhar and team have written the software based on understanding the standard programs don't work with the small screen size.
Personally I have been going down this path just out of curiosity.? I don't really need the standard wsjtx program to work.? I was just curious to see if I could make it work and what I would learn by trying to make it work.? I learned among other things that the wsjtx designers didn't make accommodations for small screen sizes.
I found other threads discussing this issue that have all kinds of workarounds involving various approaches of various levels of technical complexity:
I've only had the sBitx a week or so.? I'm mostly just trying to figure out what it can and cannot do by poking at it, the "f-around, find out" method.? I think the software it comes with is quite good.? Now I've learned a big reason why they don't use the standard wsjtx program, and why they put fldigi in the background: the standard programs just don't work with the standard raspberry pi 7 inch touch screen.

Are you saying you tried to do what is suggested in?/g/RaspberryPi-4-HamRadio/message/12696?and this did not work for you?
Just curious (as always!)
