Re: ubitx easy first radio?
Vince Vielhaber
Soldering iron, heat shrink tubing, hand tools, common sense and a case would help. No reason a newbie shouldn't be able to do it, just pay attention to details and follow the instructions.

ubitx easy first radio?
I'm looking at the ubitx as a first radio kit. Is there any reason a newbie shouldn't be able to get a working radio with it? Is any special equipment needed to build it?
My primary interest is portable ops and digital modes, what is needed to use it for psk31? USB signalink maybe? Cory |
Re: Small question about LCD mounting
Also a company called Microscale makes decal application products. Hobby Lobby used to carry it. Can't get carried away with it. You'll destroy the decal. It does soften it after all.? In modeling you use them to snug down and into panel lines and such. Well if you're a good modeler you do. I mostly just messed them up! LOL! Dan Reynolds -- KB9JLO -- Dan Reynolds -- KB9JLO <>< |
Re: Got Mine in TWO DAYS! - Case Fits!
Ordered on the 9th, delivered on the 14th. Boards are wrapped in bubble wrap, shipped in a semi-transparent plastic box encased in a tight-fitting shipping box. Now I have to wait for the case I ordered. -T ? Sent from Yahoo Mail. Ahhh bummer. I'm in the same boat it seems -- no update to the Paypal with tracking. I guess that means I won't be getting it before Xmas. Was hoping to get it set up over the break, but I'll live. Santa came early
I hadn't realized Santa had traded in his sleigh for a yellow cargo van, but must he must have.? I had ordered a uBitx late Saturday or or was it very early Sunday morning.? Did not expect it to get in until next week, but the door bell rang and there was Santa disguised as a DHL driver.? Along with the uBitx he also delivered a set of circuit boards I designed and ordered Saturday that should allow me to use a 1.8 to 2.8 inch TFT display instead of the standard LCD.? All I have to do is write some software.? But I think that some of the graphic display routines I have done for several other projects should take care of most of that.? I also found that a case I had made out of PCB material will work with just the moving of the front panel support brackets to a new location.? Now I know what I will be doing for the holidays.?

I just loaded a file in the files section titled "Decals.pdf". It is an except from a document describing one of my projects. It completely describes the process I use from printing the decals to applying them. Hope it's useful!

Got Mine in TWO DAYS! - Case Fits!
It was shipped via DHL on the 12th and I got it today the 14th!!!!!!
I did a card stock mockup of a front panel design and I can make it fitl? ?The large black circle on the top right is the outline of a 1.5" knob centered on the encoder (white? rounded rectangle).? The smaller black circle below it is the volume control.? The large white circle in the upper left represents the mounting nut for a 1/4", switching jack for the headphones and the smaller circle below is the 3.5mm TRRS mike jack.? I will install an APLOP board and I have not decided if I will install the key jack (not a CW operator) or where. |
Re: uBITX Display Separation Cable
the picture is for demo only. Notice the arduino board in behind is not connected to anything but the display. I suspect Al is using the default firmware for display purposes only so missing all the software mods. This method is basically plug n play - no soldering or rework. I like easy!?
If you want to melt some solder then flip the LM7805 5V regulator to the back side so a heatsink can be easily added. Runs alot cooler now. |
Re: Decals, Water Slide?
Try Googling "Laser Waterslide decal paper". ?
It sounds like what you were using for labelling instrumentation was more like "Letraset" or something similar. ?Waterslide decals are more typically used for plastic model planes etc.? As Arvo suggests, there are some advantages to using Laser printed decals as the toner is effectively baked-on rather than sprayed with a water-soluble ink (if you have ever gotten an ink-jet page wet after printing you know what I mean). ?With some Laser Waterslide decal paper there is no need to "fix" the printed decals with something Krylon. ? Just be aware the you will need to use a Laser printer specific version of the paper (i.e. something? that specifically says it is for use with Laser printers) otherwise the heat from the printer may damage the decals and possibly your printer.? Re: It's alive!

I would have assumed it was mechanical. Me, too, since most optical encoders would cost at least 10% of the ?BITX's retail price. However, another poster pointed out that you can "convert" a mechanical encoder to a "detentless" encoder by removing the ball inside the encoder. I've never tried that.
