Re: New Teensy 4.0 to NANO direct plug in adapter #ubitx #v6

The RobotDyn SAMD21 board looks similar, but is not a Nano plug in replacement.

For starters, there are 14 pins on each side vs 15 on the Nano.
The Raduino uses all available Nano pins, so the RobotDyn board will be short two.

The pin functions printed on the silkscreen show no attempt at compatible pin ordering
between the RobotDyn and the Nano.

It is a 3.3v processor vs 5.0v for the Nano.
Not a deal breaker but could require a few adjustments to be made.

Just catching up. ?As I recall the JackAl mod didn¡¯t allow you to select 17 meters from the display (could type in 18.xxx mhz though)... and I remember a post from Jack saying that the uBITx was not designed for 17 meters... but I guess it was since its on the v6 display??? ? That¡¯s not confusing. ?

I built it up using a 3D printed front panel & base I designed using the factory supplied acrylic front panel template for dimensions.

One nice thing about using the Teensy 4 instead of the NANO aside from the display speed is that it eliminates many of the birdies associated with the various oscillators on the NANO board and I can detect NO tuning clicks when the encoder is turned.?

The only drawback is with the 3.3V max input levels for the Teensy 4.0, the Factory's keyer code had to be abandoned, R2 had to be removed and the trace that goes from input pin A6 to the NANO and the "KEYER" pin on the 18 pin right angle connector must be cut to use the adapter with a V6 Raduino.? If this isn't done, +5V gets applied to the A6 input pin on the Teensy and will destroy the ADC in the Teensy.? We tried applying 3.3V to the Vcc side of R2 but the voltage divider outputs weren't read reliably by the Teensy's ADC and the keyer didn't work well at all.? We re-wrote the keyer to use the A6 and A7(spare) inputs with A6 being the DOT input and A7 being the DASH input.? This also requires a separate jack for the paddles but makes the keyer really sing if the mods are done.

TSW also plans our own Raduino Clone for the V6 that will have pluggable jumpers to cover removing the voltages and will operate exactly as a Factory Raduino using a NANO or by setting the jumpers work with the Teensy 4/adapter in place of the nano without cutting any traces or removing R2.? This will be available as soon as the PC boards get here and are tested, possibly next week sometime.? It's dimensions will be such that with the 2.8" ILI9341 TFT display mounted, it will directly replace a Factory Raduino.? It will be offered only as a kit but the kit price will be reasonable.? With the kit, the display and Teensy will not be supplied as they are readily available via PJRC and other suppliers.

Re: [BITxV6] Rcvr audio quality & diagnostic processes

Andy,

I have found that the BFO adjustment will make the uBitx sound terrible, tinny and full of high pops. Adjusted properly, the rigs (I have 3) all sound good.? Not great like my IC-7300, but good.

I would recommend trying the attached procedure, assuming that you have a device with internet and mic capability.? It works well, and will let you know visually that the rig's BFO is adjusted as best it can be.

NOTE: you will need a microphone connected and allow access to it to use the audio spectrum analyzer on the HFSignals web page. It works with my ipads and iphones if you do not have a pc/laptop with mic.

I hadn't seen that setting before. I'm sure that is the same setting that is available in Memory Manager. I will give it a try tonight.? ? I did not understand that there was a separate BFO calibration for SSB and CW.? Can anyone explain why there needs to be a separate BFO calibration for CW?

Re: CW Audio High Pitched and Thin #cw

Hello Dean,

I simply used the settings from the menu on the rig. First enable settings, then return to the menu and extra settings are available like for the ssb bfo adjustment.

I set mine so that I cut as much as possible the higher audio tones. It means that I most likely let some of the low audio frequencies of the opposite side band through, but it is more pleasant than the full ssb bandwidth when listening to cw imo.

Thanks Evan,

I used Memory Manager previously to set the BFO and master calibration for SSB and as far as I can tell they are spot on.? I am comfortable with using it.

There is the CW (L/U) BFO Calibration setting (see below).? I presume this is the one you are referring to.? Can you or anyone explain what this value does and what range of values I should? try?? I believe I read on Ian's site to set it to 700 - but that did not seem to make any difference.

Thanks,

I have a beginning C book I can recommend! Also, I have been asked to do a programming series for Nuts and Volts, which is aimed at the "recreational" programmer. The goal is to point out how to avoid RDC (Really Dumb Code--i.e., code that works, but not well) and move to SDC (Sorta Dumb Code--like most of my code). I have no idea when the series will start, but will put a post here when I find out.

Just adjustment of? the setup bfo freq? are you referring to something else? I haven't got into using arduino edits to this point if there are software settings that can be modified.

Propagation here at my qth is and has been very poor for a long time.

In the documentation it states startup setup menu on power up and adjust

I am unable to get a base ref freq of 10 MHz to start with; mine will
only adjust to 10500. I have set BFO to 11.055.

I am unable to hear strong HF white noise and/or any of the CHU Canada
or WWV time broadcasts but I can obtain a couple of AM broadcast
stations; however the demodulated audio not being in AM mode is Donald
Ducky sounding but partially intelligent albeit rather weak both on
built in speaker and/or on ext powered amplified USB speaker connected
via the SPKR jack.

I am unable to tune through either side of the signal to get to get rid
of the donald duck sounding?? quality audio signal to listen to.

Seems as though audio passband is so narrow or restricted that listening
to a full sideband { 300-3000 Hz} is not possible. Is there a
calibration or software adjustment I can make on an immediate or test
basis using the Arduino immediate editor to adjust this. I am not very
happy with the receive so far.

I have the Arduino IDE installed per online instructions but not experienced
in using it regularly yet. (haven't got enough practical time/experience to sort
out the 17M unselectable fix yet even.

Also I noticed when I set the freq to anything below 1 MHz like 920KHz,
990Khz or 680 KHz and save it the VFO indicator adds an extra zero in
the display so 990AM KHz would appear as 9.9MHz on the display but the
audio signal is the 990 AM audio. If I select 1290 KHz?? AM the VFO
display reads correctly and audio is what I expect to hear (except for
the water barrel or Donald Ducky audio quality).

I have a kiwiSDR registered on sdr.hu under my callsign name and it can
produce reasonable sigs for WWV and CHU yet the BITXv6 doesn't when I
compare it.

Any suggestions? all help/tips gratefully accepted.
