Thanks!? Will do.

Re: info on the V4 board mods please

Mark - N7EKU

Hi Dey,

This I think would be the starting point (from Allison's post number 53356):

The problem is if the first transistor Q71 is not biased to the half power supply
point the output are both unbalanced and the bias is wrong.? IF Q71 collector
is not at about 6V (for 12V supply) full stop.? Adjust R72 until it is.? Then adjust
the bias if needed to the complementary pair.?
This would get the first transistor in the audio amp working correctly.? Then, if needed, one could work on the push-pull pair.

Mark.

Re: info on the V4 board mods please

For improving spectrum compliance you want to replace L5 and L7 and replace the relays with axicoms . Those are the more critical IMO?

I once was very much interested in 6m AM/SSB mobile, and I'm presently very much interested in 2m SSB, but there is almost NO activity in central Florida (at least this area) - and my antenna setup isn't the greatest right now.? (I used to have two 2m SSB mobile rigs plus one for parts, but they were destroyed in a fire.)

I'd always wanted to build a 6m mobile AM rig (using simple circuits and AM chip), but no interest whatsoever from any others in the area.? If I can ever finish my degree, I hope to escape this area - and maybe even find a place where the amateur interest is in homebrew, vhf/uhf (not repeaters - although they're useful) and ragchewing (NO politics or religion).

That's a good tip about the exhaust pipe.? I remember reading about that some time ago, although I've checked the other grounds (all good from a RF standpoint, except for the doghouse which is fixed).? I may also throw a nice big ground strap on the tailpipe as well!

That site has more info for the mobile ham than several others combined.

I've been mobile on 6&2M SSB for near 20 years.? Simple fixes works
best but grounding the tail pipe is easy and often keeps the RF under
the hood (also grounded).? Location of the antenna counts too!

There are a number of V4 board mods, I have a late model V4 board (December last year).? Which of the mods that are out there are ¡°critical¡±, for example the audio amp would be one since little audio from the board.

Thanks!

Re: Difference between 2N2222A and PN2222A #ubitx40help #ubitx-help

Last time I purchased them it was 1.98$ ea for quantity more than 10.
I buy for project stock so rare is it than I buy one or two, last order it was 25!

We had a lot fo discussion last year and it comes down to this...? ?I know what
worked and wrote about it. also what was tried and a serious disappointment.

FYI testing for highest gain is not helpful as thats at DC, it is better if all the
devices had the SAME even if low gain.? Why?? You will not get more than
Ft/f at more than 10mhz.

So it comes down to do what you want and if it doesn't get the result, well, its your fault.
There is not such thing as a free lunch (TINSTAFL), in RF power that never more true.

Removing the antenna connection gets rid of the noise.? That led me astray in the beginning... I thought I was picking up radiated signals.? Later work showed that to not be the source.

One thing DID make a difference that I didn't mention - the grounding to the "dog house" (cover to the engine, inside the body of the van) was... inadequate to put it mildly.? They grounded it through the wiring harness, running back through the wires to a connection near the fuse block.? Proper grounding to the frame cut the ignition noise by at least 20db (didn't eliminate it, however - and it was still over S9 in strength - estimated).? The direct wiring did eliminate almost all of it, until I changed the audio out jack.

It may be coming in through the grounding.? A faraday shield could help eliminate that possibility.? I could also try a second direct ground strap (having multiple ground connections to the frame of the van - very low impedance setup).

I received 300 of those inductors this week and am willing to send anyone 10 of them for a buck.? Just send me an addressed envelope with the dollar bill.? I'll provide the stamp.? My address is good at QRZ.? Pic is one of the 300 I received.

Re: Difference between 2N2222A and PN2222A #ubitx40help #ubitx-help

Perhaps Allison who suggested 2N2222 metal case ,did not mean against PN2222.
Sarma,

The metal can version has better thermal capabilities and higher peak current.

That and in every case where I've replace 2n2222A with PN2222 i never got the
same performance even at very low power (10mW) levels.? One is not the other in plastic.

FYI the 2n2219 is the same die as the 2n2222 in a TO5 can with improved thermal?
capabilities so its not onle better it shares the desirable characteristics to the higher
power level.

Generally I find that the PN2222 is a slight improvement over 2n3904 but not enough
to warrant stocking them in the lab here.

Really not an option.? I don't have the resources to consider replacing the radio, except maybe (if I ever get any free time) fixing my 'good' hf rig and moving that to the van - removing it from my shack (yeah, it doesn't work right now but that's life).? The Bitx40 is also the ideal radio for mobile use IMO - a radio just like I'd wanted but could never afford to buy (40 m SSB QRP).

Interesting problem.

Maybe start by putting rig, battery, and speaker all in a Faraday cage, verify that runs quiet.?
Then make adjustments to that configuration step by step.

I suspect the problem lies somewhere between the demodulator and the NPN audio pre-amp.
Perhaps some serious attention to keeping noise out of those sections will fix it.

Most rigs have more RF gain, less audio gain.
So could add an additional stage of IF gain between the 12mhz filter and the demodulator.
But that's a major redesign, and I could be wrong in assuming this will fix it.

Could punt.
Donate that Bitx40 to some young aspiring ham,?go get a used commercial HF transceiver.

Try other vehicles.??
Could be this one has trouble with the spark plug wires or alternator brushes.
Or something.

Anybody have a Tesla or other fully electric vehicle?
No plug wires or brushes, but lots of electrical power going somewhere.
Does a *Bitx* work better in such a vehicle?
I just might have one, once I can piece it together from junkyard parts for $5k,
And being able to go 150mph, there should be lots of junkyard parts available soon enough.

I'd thought about one of those variable voltage in/constant voltage out circuits, but tried running the radio on a separate battery while in the van to try to isolate the source.? It didn't make any difference.? I suspected it was inadequately grounded, but found that the noise was also coming in through the dc line.? If the radio was on, any connection to the vehicle had noise.

I thought the problem was coming in through the antenna (didn't try a dummy load), but further tests eliminated that idea - definitely coming in through another path.? Going to the direct feed with filtering eliminated the problem, until I changed the audio out jack, and now I've got this whole new mess combined with the old.

I don't know what the answer is, but it's one that needs solving - I'm not even sure what's causing it.? (I may try lining the back of the radio with metal tape - see if it's a shielding problem.)

Hello Guys

I changed the NT7S library - only one line - the minimum PLL frequency from 600MHz to 400MHz...now it is ok from 3.2 to 110MHz ..

in the link you can see the sketch and a link to the new library.
