Jack's Book: "Software Defined Radio Transceiver: Theory & Construction of the T41-EP....."

Ah the joys of trying to relearn AP courses in order to teach them at a private high school....

For some lighter reading, I perused Jack & Albert's text on their radio -- wonderful illustrations and information -- then dug into Chapter 8 (Receiver) -- what a wonderful resource they have taken the time to compile!? ?Loads and loads of knowledge being poured out here.? ?Writing such a book is a labor of love (been there, done that to some similar degree) -- and Jack even sent me a copy for free!!? ?It will be slowly devoured and greatly appreciated, to be kept forever beside my college days' text on Digital Signal Processing.? ?I suspect this will be a great help to me in understanding the code of the sBitx.....

My 8th graders bombed their last test, and trying to get young minds to dig into TECHNOLOGY -- the discoveries that mapped out the atomic structure -- is so so much work....likewise teaching AP Physics and AP Calc....but this is part of what hams do -- TEACH others to preserve our culture, our social structures.? ?Jack and Albert have put forth a great text that will teach many.? ?None of us has time to do EVERYTHING, so I'm grateful for all the work put forward by Ashhar, Jack and so many others here.? ?They are bringing digital processing right down to our levels with all that they do.

Jack,

I am at home and downloaded the newest file in the groups.io file section, extracted it, and compiled it.? I did not get any errors.? Here is the tools dropdown in the Arduino IDE:

Daylight again schematic questions

Should R51 be connected to TX or 12V? On the schematic it's not connected to anything.

In the PTO the text talks about a 7809 but the schematic shows 7805.

On a happy note, the PTO 3D print worked perfectly for me. It's getting harder to find real brass bolts here but eventually I tracked some down. The nuts fit the holes snugly.

Re: #sbitx Upgrades shipped #sBitx

Thanks Ashhar. Perhaps I should have thought of volunteering to distribute for Australian purchasers earlier but hopefully the postage costs for HF Sigs weren't too high. .?

You are correct. I should have read the email better. I will blame it on grandkids distraction.?

I have not run into the issue you describe. ?I would verify that you have the correct card selected and that you are using the old boot loader.?

Sorry for any confusion I created.?

Thanks for the quick answer Evan,

?

Now I am confused (more). I thought that the Nextion editor construct was a separate issue from the uBITX V6 software compile. I am missing something(s) I guess.

Is the Arduino uploading the Nextion HMI file (or its equivalent) from within this compile??? I was assuming that an HMI file for this Arduino software would be need to compiled and put on an SD Card in the display. Please point me to the resources I am missing here. I am obviously new to the uBITX world.

You may need to use the LTS version of the Nextion editor. Look for it on the Nextion web page. I am away from my qth right now. ?If you can not find it I will post the link when I get home.?

Need help troubleshooting. #sketch-too-big
For those who have successfully installed the latest drop of N8ME_2_VU3GAO_Mods, what Arduino ISP version are you using?

-What are the parameters in the ISP you are using for a "stock" uBITX V6 complete kit? I have noodled with several:?
-Board: Arduino Mini
-Processor: ATmega328P
-Programmer ArdunoISP (and a couple of similar appearing entries)

I am getting the infamous "Sketch too big" error even after playing with several versions of the ISP and following Ashhar's description of compiling and loading the sketch.
part of error message reads: text section exceeds available space in board Sketch used 29214 bytes(101%) of available space. Maximum is 288672 bytes.
I don't mess with Arduino enough to have a clue what to comment out or otherwise eliminate that would allow a good compile. Have read something about eliminating the boot loader from compile, but isn't boot loader required to init the firmware?

Currently have ISP 1.8.12 installed.
Pretty obvious some parameter or other is not right and I am unable to prevent the bloat on compile.
A search of the messages found a lot addressing the issue for other firmware, but little useful for the N8ME/VU3GAO version.

Thanks in advance for any clear text, non jargon laden explanations offered.

I have some updates available for testing here:

This includes the following improvements to the spectrum display (inline picture below):

- Dragging of the displayed bandwidth: grab the spectrum display frequency in the green outlined area
- Dragging of the pitch: grab the pitch line in the purple outlined area
- Dragging of the low and high filter frequencies: grab the low and high frequencies in the yellow outlined areas

You can ¡°grab¡± these areas using your mouse or the touch screen. ?The VFO frequency can still be changed by dragging anywhere else in the spectrum display, and right-click QSY is still supported as well.

Feedback welcome.

Thanks for the kind words.
I not that young and I forgot more than I know.
I was licensed in 1979 ask KA3DFK I took off about 30 years an got back in to it during the Pandemic. That¡¯s how I got the uBITX need a radio . That¡¯s when it all started.
I turned 75 last Sunday. So I have had my share of oops?

Re: #sBitx Sbitx died mid transmission #sBitx

Mark Earnest

This is the one I have been using for a while.?

I also need to swap my IRFZ24 FETs but that was due to a high SWR scenario, the buck converter is still working fine.?

Anyone know if it is safe to run the sbitx as a receiver with the IRFZ24s removed (assuming you don't transmit)?

Some calculations on the IF filter and USB filter

Hello,

When analyzing the programs KD8CEC or Ubitx V4,5,6 I have a little trouble to understand how the different values of First IF, Second USB, Second LSB and int USB are calculated.
In the KD8CEC program, there are different examples, but I¡¯m having a hard time figuring it out.

The best is an example, and it speaks louder:
Let¡¯s imagine (These are examples) that I have a 45 MHZ filter that has a center frequency of 45002200 htz with a bandwidth of 7.5 KHtz on each side of this frequency, and then an SSB filter of 12000800 htz in center frequency with a bandwidth of 2.5Khz on each side?

What are the calculations to make to find these 4 values.
This will allow the most accurate adjustment of the filter configuration.
So:
First IF= ? Calculation formula
Second USB=?? same
Second LSB=?? same
Init USB=?? same
?
Knowing that in all programs seen, VFOA and VFOB still have the same value (7150000 and 14200000)
?
Thank you
?

Re: #sBitx Sbitx died mid transmission #sBitx

Scott,?
Do you have a part number for your buck converter?? I think it's amazing that Ashar is sending replacements out.? However I am hoping to do a POTA activation next Thursday and I'd like to move as quickly as I can with the repair.? Tell me if I'm wrong, but the buck converter will replace the LM338, and I just swap 2 new IRFZ24 FET's onto the heat sink?
Thanks you for your explanation
Scott

Begin by looking at the 5v regulator. It is the 388 or its replacement switching regulator just next to the 12 volt input to the unit.

Re: #sBitx Sbitx died mid transmission #sBitx

Scttmtclf,

What you describe is exactly my experience. ?The root cause is the LM338 failing and you probably lost one or both of the PA transistors as well. ?The overall problem is the heat sink clamp for the differing sizes of the devices. ?The cure, unfortunately, is to replace the PA transistors and the voltage regulator. ?The good news is Ashhar has just shipped replacement devices.

The replacement voltage regulator is a buck design that is extremely efficient and does not require a heat sink. ?The allows the PA transistors to be solidly clamped to the heat sink. ?I¡¯ve not had one problem since I replaced these devices.

I¡¯m not sure if there is a step-by-step instruction guide but it¡¯s a pretty easy replacement. ?The only tricky part is mounting the regulator.

Good luck, Scott

?

Re: #sBitx Sbitx died mid transmission #sBitx

Scttmtclf,

I would verify that the LM338T provides the 5volts to the Raspberry Pi (RPi).? You could verify that the RPi is still working by removing it from the radio, connecting an HDMI display, a USB Mouse, a USB keyboard,? and providing a USB-C voltage supply.? If the regulator has failed, I would wait for the upgrade kit from HFSignals that has the replacement regulator and finals.? If the RPi is the problem, you need to order a replacement.? The RPi 4 is hard to find at a reasonable price.

To reinstall the RPi, follow the assembly manual:

Re: how can download file x sbitx #sBitx

Use IDM Internet Download Manager or IDM Integration Module in your browser.
There is probably another download manager that can resume the interrupted download.

Yes it is getting power. I swapped power supplies, and it still did not turn on. I also used its power supply on another radio, and it worked correctly
