addendum:
it's not the software that changes the chances of failure, but the current-limiting power supply, a well-matched antenna and a well-functioning silent fan that is attached to the heatsink. The rest of my modifications were my own attempts.
I note that my antenna is sized for 7MHz (43.8m wire length) and I can use it on three bands without a tuner.
