Subject: Re: Alpha and Beta particle nuclear decay studies. Vacuum pump for sampling
Good points,? and I was wondering about that because I don't want to be breathing oil mist either.? Will check for oil on output but for sure install a catch filter if there isn't one in the bottle on the outlet.?
All of my pumps are oil (except the turbo) types.? My experience with diaphragm types is that they fail...? Aquariums mostly.?

Nick I have a oil type
pump on my vacuum oven and it uses scrubbers on the exhaust as there is quite a
haze without it. Do you get an oil haze out of the exhaust port?? All that is going
back in so use an exhaust filter.? An inlet filter will prevent oil back-streaming
from the pump to the evacuated chamber which is why these are used on alpha spec
systems. I would be wary of using ?that pump for that purpose. Get a diaphragm type
pump there are plenty on Ebay around $100. I also realize that we¡¯re not
dealing with a closed vacuum system but why take chances. At the very least
disconnect the vac line when finished as diffusion rules.

Well I shoved the cord wires in an extension cord and it actually seems
to run okay on 120vac.? Sounds pretty good,? not too loud.?
?If I completely plug the inlet hoses it slows down enough to kick in the
starter again though.?
This model should be rated at 1.1-1.3cfm.
I think I'll install a proper 120 plug on the cord and hook it up to
the SmartCAM and see what airflow it reports.?

Okay so I did bring my little Gast pump to Texas.? ?That's
the good news.? ?The bad news is that the motor is 240vac.? And
I haven't added the additional 240 outlets I need to for range,? tube furnace,?
welder,? etc. next to the door where it's convenient.?
It's a Gast 0211-V87 pump.? So before I can even test it I need to
either do some wiring or temp splice a dryer cord onto it to plug into my
compressor outlet tucked way back in the corner behind the South Bend vertical
mill.?
