Re: pda

I would say about the main requirement is it needs to operate with the
Windows mobile operating system. I use a HTC Touch Pro. As soon as the
"Quick GPS" program can download good data which seems to be a problem in
the US since the DST change has screwed up the use of the built in GPS; but
that is a discussion for a different forum.

non-APRS tracking software

Just wanted to share a non APRS tracking software link called TRACKME. Have used it once or twice.

Couple of comments after about a month of off and on use

svkaereste

My phone, using the HTC Touch/Sprint unlimited plan CE6.1

Comments about when screen goes dark; does program keep running? On the Touch, the answer is YES. The screen goes dark to save battery but all applications keep running. Push the power switch and screen is back up, everything including GPS is working. I didn't need to change any settings for this on the Touch.

Texting is much faster using my phone, over the Kenwood D710 or similar. Even though I don't have a real key pad on this phone, using the stylus and the on screen typing keyboard is a breeze.

It is taking some time to get the local digi owners to change their settings to the internet to get full duplex with radio based APRSers but they are coming around once I show them this program.

BTW, I love the phone icon. It brings interesting coments from FindU users ;-) Especially since my message is my phone number.

Everyone I've shown this to is WOWed by it!

My only negative comment is that + and - which I guess you asked the group about (before I tried the program) works opposite from any GPS I've owned so I have to stop and think about which way to press. + should be for zooming in for more detail. But don't change it on my account ;-)

This latest version has a couple of neat additions.

Keep up the good work! Thanks again,73

Red dots

Lynn W. Deffenbaugh

Jerome,

The red dot (there should only be one of them) indicates your projected position based on the most recent beacon that APRSISCE transmitted. The red dot isn't scaled to the map, but to the surrounding circle. In the Genius Beacon settings, there's a Forecast Error that defaults to 0.1 miles (1/10 mile). That distance is considered to the be radius of the circle. The red dot will range from the center towards the edge in the direction that your last beaconed heading and speed would place you. When the red dot hits the edge, if the Min Time has elapsed, a new beacon will be issued.

For instance, let's say your last beacon said you were going due East at 5 miles per hour. Right after that beacon, you increased your speed to 7 miles per hour. The red dot will start lagging to the west as you travel faster east than your last beacon would indicate. When the forecast lags by 1/10 mile, the dot will hit the left edge of the circle and a new beacon will be sent and the red dot will jump back to the center to be covered by your own icon.

If you turn slightly left or right, you will see the red dot slow start moving towards the edge as your current path veers away from where an extrapolated position would put you. Again, when it has seen an accumulated error of 1/10 mile (or whatever you have configured for the Forecast Error), a new beacon will be sent.

Hopefully that clarifies the mysterious red dot!

1) is the APRSIS-CE application constantly maintaining a DATA STREAM connectivity to the internet, via my data plan on my phone? In other words, while I am beaconing, do I have a connection via my data plan, that never disconnects?

Yes, for APRS-IS to function correctly by displaying all activity, a
constant TCP connection to the APRS-IS server is necessary. This is
true even if you are NOT beaconing. The incoming connection is
controlled by Enables/APRS-IS Enabled. The transmission of your current
location is a combination of GPS Enabled and Tracking Enabled.
Telemetry can also be independently enabled in the current version.
2) Or does APRSIS-CE make a connection,; send a beacon; and then disconnect?
This would be the equivalent of a transmit-only tracker and is not
supported by APRSISCE. The whole purpose of the client is to provide
visibility to what's around you as well as providing visibility of you
to others. That's why I recommend an unlimited data plan.
3) I assume that I need to have a constant functioning of my GPS circuit in my cellphone, in order for APRSIS-CE to work. Is that correct?
Sort of. In order to transmit your position, yes, you have to keep the
GPS enabled. However, to conserve battery life (the GPS eats more than
the data connection), I routinely disable my GPS (double-click on the
gps fix status box) when going indoors. This allows the client to keep
the current picture up-to-date with respect to others, but saves power
by not running the GPS when you're not significantly moving.

Check Windows Mobile GPS functions - use VisualGPSce

I have a small free tool I use on my Sprint Mogul phone called VisualGPSce that works to display satellites and my gps position, via the built-in phone gps. Some might find it useful to supplement APRSIS-CE and make sure your gps is working.

Re: wake up from battery save mode

understood. turning off the GPS is a application stopper also.

At least it is clear how this all seems to work under WM6. I tried the test again this afternoon. Activated APRDISCE and hit the ScreenOff button. everything kept working smoothly.

something like that.

One correction though. The power button doesn't suspend APRSISCE (at
least on my Tilt). It DOES shut off the GPS. I do this routinely when
I walk inside a building. The APRS-IS incoming stream continues to
operate as I've received APRS-IS messages after turning off the phone.
I know that beaconing stops because the GPS no longer reports a fix.

1) Never, never, never hit the power button on your cellphone to

keep the applications running in the background; instead it puts all
applications in SUSPEND, thus turning off applications. This is no
good for APRSISCE, as it turns it off. Even with the S2U2
application, and APRSISCE loaded as a excepted application to S2U2,
somehow APRSISCE goes into suspend.

2) Instead, to save on battery power, install the applications
"ScreenOff", and map a button to the application. This tool will just
turn the screen off, and do nothing else. Everything else on your WM6
phone will keep working. If you want the screen back on gain hit the
power on button for your phone, and the phone comes back on. Even the
data stream keeps running while the screen is blanked with ScreenOff.

3) Also would like to recommend the WM6 application "LvmTopBat" as it
will keep a thin battery power status bar at the top of every
application. This is great for watching the battery decrease in power
while running APRSISCE.

Just tried this all on my drive to work today. The whole trip was
beaconing and it all recorded and was displayed on a APRS.FI web page.
All while the phone was on battery power only, and the screen was
turned off. No issues for the 1/2 hour drive.

The latest version of S2U2 has an exceptions list. If I put APRSISCE on the exceptions list the S2U2 will never start in, and APRSISCE keeps running regardless of battery power levels.

Of course all battery power saver startup routines are disabled at all times now. Will keep investigating.

Lynn - thanks for a great application. I am looking for some kind of utility that would wake up the phone from battery saver mode, to allow a beacon of my position.

since phones naturally want to go to battery save mode, there must be some application that will bring my data connection up, activate aprsisce and then put the phone back to sleep. maybe once every five, ten or twenty minutes; assuming i am on battery power, and assuming i have a data connection.

alternatively, wondering if the aprs protocol would allow a mobile station to record its position versus time; and then upload the data when a data connection is re-established. does aprs protocol allow that?

I'll add that one to the list. Currently it's very US-centric.
I'm also change path for cached OSM maps to storage card in xml, is it possible to make this directly in menu in next version?
That is already on the list, but I'm glad you found the .XML
configuration file and got it changed. The OSM directory currently
grows and grows without upper bound. A future version will track usage
of the cached tiles and delete ones that have not been referenced for
some configurable time period. I'm also planning to provide some
visibility to how many tiles at the various zoom levels are in the cache
and how much space they occupy.
Also is missing for me possibility for free moving on map (like google maps on wm) without restrictions on aprs station.

That is actually the top of the list, but I really need to manage the
OSM cache before I do this one. When you can drag around the map, you
can really buffer a BUNCH of OSM tiles. My phone currently has over
300MB of cached tiles (yes, mine is on the SD card also).
Aprsisce seems by great plug and play program on wm for novice and lazy nonradio aprs hams like me :) In Slovakia we have problems with only few Radio gate, therefore is only few people on aprs and aprsisce seems to be way for expansion aprs in Slovakia... I play little bit also with aprsce / AGW CE and aprsisce is very easy for setting and using for me.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm striving to keep it simple to use, yet
powerful enough to cover anything most people would want to do.
Sorry for my English, i don't have problem with reading, but with writing something :)

doing that. Thank you for the response and the suggestions!
