Re: West Baltimore Group website

I am working on this. Let's see if I can do something about this. No promises but I'm going to give it a shot.

Mr. G

On page 177 of Alcoholics Anonymous comes of age, Bert the man you used his tailor shop as collateral for a loan, references a "Mr.G" as the man he contacted for the money. ?Anyone know who Mr.G might be? ?I'm assuming he was in AA because there's no last name given

I'll be speaking in a couple of hours if anyone's interested. Again you're all invited to use this particular topic to let us know when you're sharing so that we can have more of a sense of community by supporting each other in our attempts to carry the message. It doesn't have to be a history talk but of course that would be a bonus. Sometimes just getting to know you as a person is a good thing too. :)

For me, it marks a time when I must shift from activity to reflection and meditation and to the task of acting as your scribbler, to record the experience of these marvelous years just past. ?

We are standing on the threshold of maturity, although no one can say in truth that we are really mature yet. This process of maturing will of course go on as long as we last.?Bill W Talk on 1953 Conference

?

Each Conference has its own distinct personality and achievement. More than any other, this Conference, I believe, had confidence. More than any other, it envisioned its responsibility now and for all time to come. Confidence and responsibility have become the keynotes.?Bill W Talk on 1954 Conference

?

Please believe that I shall not be at all affected if you happen to disagree. Above all, you must act on experience and on the facts; and never because you think I want a change. Since St. Louis, the future of A.A. belongs to you!?Bill W Talk on 1956 Conference

?

The Second Tradition is the source of all of the authority which, as you know, lies in the group conscience of which this Conference is the articulate voice worldwide.?Bill W Talk on 1957 Conference

?

As for your expressions of confidence in me, I treasure them greatly because I know you have not made them to applaud me, to confirm my infallibility that I have but rather to recognize that I am like you, that I, too, am fallible. You haven¡¯t made these expressions for the reasons they are so often made. I deem it you have made them because you love me and because you love each other.?Bill W Talk on 1958 Conference

?

Our problems of the future won¡¯t be the problems of re¡ªcreating Alcoholics Anonymous, or taking those great long chances or heavy risks. Our problem will be primarily the presentation of¡ªthe preservation of, the protection and the slow perfecting of what we have. And leadership, too, in all levels may have to face some day this society¡¯s bout with crisis.?Bill W Talk on 1959 Conference

?

We reference the past and its lessons for so long as those teachings work. When they don¡¯t, we re-adapt and we re-shift. That has been our history.?Bill W Talk on 1960 Conference

?

You will remember that at St. Louis a huge transference took place. We old¡ªtimers realizing that we couldn¡¯t last forever, also realized that a linkage had to be made between you and this vital beacon of service right here. We realized that this Conference had to be established firmly and that you had to be given the opportunity to look after your own affairs worldwide. We had to apply Tradition Two to ourselves, formally passing the ultimate authority and responsibility over to you and to the generations that will follow you. This powerful experiment had to be tried. One of the most glorious moments in my whole A.A. career was the day when I first realized that in spite of my weakness and your weakness, we are going to do this¡ªand that it would succeed. But there is more that has to be transferred than past authority and responsibility. And that this transfer has been going on a long time, I speak to you of the transfer of service leadership.?Bill W Talk on 1961 Conference

?

Our season of rejoicing, reflection, action and love in close intimacy is drawing to its close and it will presently belong to the past. But the impressions and benefits left upon us which we trust will be carried to others, shall be, I think, imperishable.?Bill W Talk on 1963 Conference

?

¡°My mind goes back to the early days of A.A. and I think how valuable to us is the sense of history. But, like all things of value, it can be misused. Let us not suppose that we have all the requisites, else the past will lay a dead hand on us.¡±?Bill W Talk on 1964 Conference

?

¡°We should very seriously ask ourselves how many alcoholics have gone on drinking because we have failed to cooperate in good spirit with these many agencies ¨C whether they be good, bad or indifferent,¡± the co-founder remarked. ¡°No alcoholic should go mad or die merely because he did not come straight to A.A. at the beginning.¡±?Bill W Talk on 1965 Conference

Ana

I have had good luck getting PDF copies of old AA literature from the GSO Archives. In NY.? Just tell them exactly what you are going to do with what you request and a promise not to publish or reproduce the material. They may make you sign a form, but thats normal.
Good luck

A.A. PAMPHLETS

Hi,
Hoping someone can help.??I'm doing research on pamphlets where language and definitions in their original versions were perhaps clearer, than current versions.??Unfortunately I have been unable to locate the below two pamphlets.? Does anyone have an electronic copy (or extra hard copy) they'd be willing to share?

--1965 A.A. Group pamphlet
--1986 (maybe 1985?) Native North American pamphlet?

Thank you in advance.

Re: American Atheist Society

This story appeared on the AAHL FB site, or one very similar, a year or so ago.? It was claimed in the ensuing discussion that Bill W made? up the story and the American Atheist Society never existed.? Bill Schaberg demonstrates that Bill W was prone to this in his "Writing the Big Book."

Has anyone ever heard of this American Atheist Society?? I found one online reference to American Atheists, started by Madelyn Murray O'Hair, in 1963. Another reference to the AAI, Atheist Alliance International, started in 1991. Also the Atheist Alliance of America (AAA) started in 1991.? There is mention online of The Secular Coalition For America, which includes other Humanist organizations.? But no mention of The American Atheist Society, and no mention of any Atheist organization dating from the early to mid 20th century.? Was this the case of Bill spinning a yarn to make a point or does anyone have any evidence of the existence of this society?

This topic is a spinoff of the White Paper mentioned in another post.? It quotes the above line.? I found it interesting and rejuvenating reading.? Motivation to make sure I am carrying THE message of recovery as it is mapped out in the Big Book.

Re: American Atheist Society

Hi Brian,
10 years ago I had a sposee named George who wrote the news letter for the American Atheist Society.? He confirmed everything that you see in the Wikipedia page.? George drank until he was more than 40 pounds under weight. and finaly died of alcohol poisoning.? He drank himself to death.
He was a confirmed atheist and refused to believe anything in the Big Book.??
He was an interesting man; masters degree in journalism and Navy officer.? My AA group buried him in the National Memorial Cemetary near Phoenix.? The AA group were the only people who attended.

I just realized the Youtube link above is for the Jackie B presentation so NVM on that question.? I'd still like to see the "white paper" that was printed.? Thanks.

Re: The White Paper - ON THE MATTER OF A.A. ATHEIST/AGNOSTIC GROUPS

Could someone provide the link to the "white paper" that "Akron Intergroup ran in three consecutive editions" ???? I could not find it on aaagnostica.com .? Thanks.? ?I wish I had seen Jackie B's presentation on AA Orthodoxy mentioned by Joe H in the first post.? Is audio of that available somewhere???

So when you do find something of interest, let me know so that I can either get it from you and put it in our file library so that all can have it in perpetuity or do something else with it. We're trying to be a resource of accessible archives that aren't behind lock and key or travel restrictions, if you know what I mean ;-) In fact, that's been the whole point of AAHL from the very beginning. -Thom R.]

Yes, he did but he wanted the discussion to be about the points he made in the "paper", not him. Having been a friend of his I shall always honor that request.
I believe Akron Intergroup ran it in three consecutive editions. Also, as Joe H. mentioned, the aaagnostica ran it also.
