10 years ago I had a sposee named George who wrote the news letter for the American Atheist Society.? He confirmed everything that you see in the Wikipedia page.? George drank until he was more than 40 pounds under weight. and finaly died of alcohol poisoning.? He drank himself to death.
He was a confirmed atheist and refused to believe anything in the Big Book.??
He was an interesting man; masters degree in journalism and Navy officer.? My AA group buried him in the National Memorial Cemetary near Phoenix.? The AA group were the only people who attended.

From the following quote by Bill Wilson in the 12x12, Step 2, pg 26.?
"Take it easy. The hoop you have to jump through is a lot wider than you think. At least I found it so. So did a friend of mine who was a one-time vice-president of the American Atheist Society, but he got through with room to spare."
Has anyone ever heard of this American Atheist Society?? I found one online reference to American Atheists, started by Madelyn Murray O'Hair, in 1963. Another reference to the AAI, Atheist Alliance International, started in 1991. Also the Atheist Alliance of America (AAA) started in 1991.? There is mention online of The Secular Coalition For America, which includes other Humanist organizations.? But no mention of The American Atheist Society, and no mention of any Atheist organization dating from the early to mid 20th century.? Was this the case of Bill spinning a yarn to make a point or does anyone have any evidence of the existence of this society?
This topic is a spinoff of the White Paper mentioned in another post.? It quotes the above line.? I found it interesting and rejuvenating reading.? Motivation to make sure I am carrying THE message of recovery as it is mapped out in the Big Book.
