Re: Im Excited about this new site!

Thom,

Having the Yahoo Groups archives available would be huge - as you know, there is a lot of great information in our old posts.

Thanks for your service!

Theron,

There was a way to migrate content from the Yahoo groups over to here for a short period of time but that window closed back in December. Yahoo is changing their interfaces and dismantling parts of the old groups so it is now no longer possible to do that from what I can tell. However, we can still post archives of those groups here which is actually something that I'm already working on. It may take me a bit of time but I believe that we could do it in some form they just won't be integrated with the message? board database or anything--they would more likely be in the library as attachments.

Re: Im Excited about this new site!

Thank you for your kind words. Just trying to be of service, aren't we all? There's a really good chance that we're going to have to upgrade to a Premium plan, yes, because we all have so much to share and the free plan is extremely limited. We can probably start a thread discussing it once the dust settles and we get a handle on how best to platform the group conscience here. ??

Thanks for stepping forward on this, Thom! I see that Groups.io have a free plan but if there is any charge involved, please speak up so we can be self supporting.

I don't suppose there is any practical way to roll over the content from the Yahoo Group(s)?

FW: [AAHistoryLovers] Big Book Incongruity, correction

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

?

I have a clarification to make:

AA¡¯s founding is universally agreed as Bill¡¯s enduringly successful outreach to Bob in June 1935 after Bob¡¯s last drinking episode.

It was that meeting on a Sunday afternoon that mattered: the outreach--- even when Bob had his final drunken adventure a few weeks after it. The ¡®seed was planted and it took root¡¯ as it has been repeated millions of times since then.

We still argue about the exact date of that month, too, but our success began with that watershed event.

There is no inaccuracy, and there was no editing. It wasn't necessary.
Bill was a patient at Towns 4 times, the first in 1933, 6 years before the penning of Bill's Story.
If it had been written in 1939, that one "of our number" won the Heisman Trophy in 1931, are you folks REALLY saying that the statement would be inaccurate because the footballer wasn't an AA member in 1931?

The Big Book is dead-on accurate on this.

Books on A.A. History

On the recommendations of this group, I bought?Drunks - An American History by Christopher M. Finan and I'm really enjoying it. Noteworthy among many other things is the mention of Nancy O., the moderator of our first Yahoo Group for many years and probably its founder.

You are definitely spot-on, Bob, dispelling an incongruity with fact!

AA¡¯s founding is universally agreed as Bill¡¯s enduringly successful outreach to Bob in June 1935 after Bob¡¯s last drinking episode.

We still argue about the exact date of that month, too, but our success began with that watershed event.

Hell, even the 4th of July ¡®birth of the US¡± followed the formal and binding July 2 signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Should we celebrate July 2nd? I think I¡¯ll pass on that one¡

As many of you are aware or might not be aware but are about to be because I'm about to tell you LOL, Yahoo is practically stopped supporting their groups entirely. However this particular platform was started by some people who were involved in creating the Yahoo group system in the first place and are carrying it forward. This is a wonderful platform and I think we're going to really enjoy being here. Any concerns or suggestions or anything else at all please feel free to contact me.

2006 PBS' History Detectives on Bill W and Herbert Wallace

In honor of this new message board here's something that may not be widely known.

In 2006 PBS' History Detectives did an episode on a condolence letter Bill W had written on the passing of Herbert Wallace. They interviewed Mel B. and went to Stepping Stones to search for clues. I checked the old AA History Lovers message archive for 2006 at Hindsfoot.org to look for discussion of the show on the group and there were in fact questions asked at the time about the content of the show but apparently they weren't answered.

So here's the of the show and a piece of AA History that may not have been discussed yet anywhere else.

Welcome!

The group has been approved and is now live. Will be working hard to set it up in the next few days. Feel free to start some discussions and we will bring more features online as time goes on.

When Glenn asked me to take this on (and I accepted) I knew that Yahoo groups was not long for this world and that groups.io is an amazing platform. It was an obvious choice to move it to here. I am also starting a Facebook group that will hopefully offer a different angle on sharing AA History. Let's see what happens with both platforms. AAHL now opens a new chapter in its evolution. These are exciting times, indeed! Thank you all who decide to share this experience with me and with each other.
