Re: 109 lathe 3/4"-16TPI faceplate?
My name is Brian.
Thank you for a thorough answer. The 2 faceplate numbers I gave in my first post were actually cast into the faceplates at manufacture.? B3518 often appears on auction sites and everyone I've seen is 1/2"-20TPI.? 218 I got from an old manual and had confirmed by a current auction as 1/2"-24TPI.? As you probably know war time castings sometimes have poorly marked numbers in the casting because they did not have the correct punches or were in a hurry before the pours. I am positive that my 109.0703 is a hollow 3/4"-16TPI spindle and it's surface wear is near to the finish of the unit so it has been there for some years.? I know there is an active seller named 'largevise' of a solid 3/4"-16TPI custom 109 lathe spindle on eBay made from 4140 steel.? I'm pretty sure he is not making these spindles on another 109 lathe.? I found a video of a person that fit a 14mm shaft with a heated collar to also make a spindle for a 109 series lathe: I'm sure due to the scarcity of the spindle and the probability of damaging them there were quite a few people that resorted to making their own 109 lathe spindles.? I don't think 'Home Shop Supply' is in business any more selling aftermarket 109 lathe spindles. I find the 3/4"-16TPI spindle thread quite advantageous because I own a MaxNC CNC lathe (MaxNC is out of business again) that uses Taig threaded chucks that are also 3/4"-16TPI.? I already have a collection of chucks and spindle fixtures for that MaxNC lathe. Now that I know I will not likely find an original faceplate or driveplate for the 109 lathe dog with a 3/4"-16TPI spindle thread, I guess I will make what I need because most of the auctions are for larger faceplates from other lathes with that 3/4"-16TPI thread.? I have a suitable portable bandsaw that cuts up to 4" round stock between 100-450FPM.? I can get short lengths of 4" round solid rod made from cast iron (40 or G2) and 12L14.? The older 4 jaw 3" scroll chuck's threaded plate looks to be about 1/4" in some auction pictures I found, it does reach into the chuck about 1" in the center threaded projection.? I should be able to slice off a disc from the stock, locate and drill a center hole, tap that to 3/4"-16TPI or 1/2"-24TPI as I like.? Mount it on the intended 109 lathe and face both the surfaces and then repeat this to make a jam nut.? Then I can mill slots in that, mill a lathe dog grove, face a registration for a 3, 4 or 6 jaw chuck or just put holes in that as I like.? Either all that or grab a 1/2" threaded faceplate and open the hole up to be 3/4"-16TPI threaded and label it well so as to not confuse others.? I could also use the cast iron faceplates from the 12" Craftsman wood lathe which I know work because I own one 149.23871 with a 3/4"-16TPI faceplate (unfortunately it has no groove for a lathe dog, but I could mill that then balance it). I'm happy to hang around the group and not disappear.? I will share pictures of my lathes, but my time lately is very limited so my progress in delivering pictures may be quite slow. |
Re: 109 lathe 3/4"-16TPI faceplate?
开云体育?? (Please sign all posts with some sort of name) ? The 109.0702 and 109.0703 were made for Sears by AA from 1941 through 1943.? They originally came with a 1/2” diameter spindle with 1/2”-24 threads.? The 109.20630 was made in 1947 and 1948 and the 109.21270 was made from 1949 until 1961.? The spindle threads on both of them were 1/2”-20.? If your lathe started out as a 109.0703 but has a 3/4” diameter spindle, someone went to a lot of trouble to rebuild the headstock for a 3/4” spindle.? On Hobby-Machinist.com, we have over the past decade had two reports of a 109.21280 with a cast iron headstock and 3/4”-16 spindle nose threads.? However, neither owner hung around for very long.? So I don’t have much info on that machine.? It was apparently made in 1967 according to one of the owners.? But that is all that we know about it.? It does not appear to have ever made it into the Sears Power Tools catalog. ? Best thing for you to do first is to submit photos of your machine, front and back. ? If you log into groups.io and go to the AA-109 list and then to Files, you will find a little bit of what we have on the AA machines.? I need to upload several files.? But it does not include any of the face plates that you mentioned.? Whose numbers are those? ? The spindle drawing L9-31 is the only 3/4”-16 spindle that we have but it is for the long obsolete Atlas-built 101.07300 lathe which was only made for one year, 1938.? I think that it was uploaded to the wrong address. ? We do have the Sears parts lists 0n all of the AA lathes including the final 109.21280. ? Robert Downs Moderator ? 109 lathe 3/4"-16TPI faceplate?
I have a 109.0703 with a 3/4"-16TPI spindle, a lathe dog, and no faceplate.
Anyone know the casting number for the 3/4"-16TPI faceplate? I know B3518 is the 1/2"-20TPI faceplate. I think 218 is the 1/2"-24TPI faceplate. Unfortunately the 109.0703 manuals I can find all are shared with the shorter bed models.? So maybe they ignored this faceplate, or, maybe a previous owner replaced the spindle with a custom part. |

开云体育Sounds good! I’ll remember our conversation, when I see parts for a 109 I’ll post to our group.?1 have a 1947 109. It’s in really good shape. I know u will b able to get what u need for yours, u will enjoy it! Sooo cool to own this piece of well made history! Merry Christmas Doug! I think you nailed it. I went to E-bay and searched for "Craftsman head stock" and I saw several similar 'head stocks' for the larger lathes. Thanks a lot! ?Higher speed would be for wood or brass - maybe plastic. I have a Chinese mini lathe and a mill and several motors. I think that I can get the 109 doing something useful and over time get replacement parts. At least?I got the chuck cleaned up tonight and I got some oil on the ways.
Again, thanks. ? |
Re: What is that on the 109?
Yes, I agree. Looks like the head for turning wood. It should work for metal, just gonna turn fast.

U have a good start for getting your 109 up & running. I’ve looked on eBay, there r a lot of parts for sale including the head stock casting for a 109. I don’t remember the company, a google search should find it. There’s a co. That specializes in lathe parts. U may even find a 1/2 nut. Hope u can get everything u need! What is that on the 109?
Doug Wilson
A friend who was cleaning out his warehouse gave me a box of parts, about half of a Craftsman 101 and about some Craftsman 109 bed, a 109 head stock. An attachment was mounted on the bed that I can't identify. It has 3302 stamped on the side. It has groves that perfectly match up to the to the Vs ?on the 109's bed so I think it was made for
that bed. There was a pulley on the shaft and it has a number, AX25 I was hoping someone in this group would know something about the attachment. The bed is in decent shape, there is a carriage and lead screw (no half nut?). Sadly, the base of head stock must have busted. There are no V's left to mount the headstock on the bed. The bearings and pulley seem OK. I would appreciate any thoughts about this 'gift'. Doug Wilson New member? heath bed. |
Re: 109 Tai;stock
开云体育Well I bought one complete for $50 and another for $150 and I experimented with using them and found that improvements to the headstock and spindle are necessary to do serious work of the lightest kind. It is far too easy to bend the standard spindle and the upgrade improvement eliminates the Morse taper. Got about half way into reengineering the headstock with a needle bearing front bearing to take lateral loads and a deep row ball bearing at the rear taking the axial loads. Gave up on the project after realizing that I had a mint 618! ? ? ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? From: mike allen
