Moving forward from losses 2
I haven't made a lot with my 109.20630 in the last 20 years other than some few repair parts for my printing presses. Care-giving took me away in 2010, and then squatters looted the shop. Recently I've regained access, found the swine had stolen the Bison 3-jaw chuck I got from Home Shop Supply, and the ER-32 collet chuck set from joelr7052 on eBay in 2020. Now I'm looking for replacements. The Bison is 640+ now (135 when I got it) but the ER-32 isn't much more today. Any favorite suppliers now that Home Shop Supply is gone? I am browsing Discount Machine Shop and BM Parts Tech (formerly My Machine Shop). --Eric H

New Member - Metric Gears 4
Just joined and recently finished rebuilding a 109 that is in good shape and quite complete. Added an armature chuck set to it, a new non-independent 4 jaw chuck, and an Aloris-like tool holder. Have a couple of spindle adapters I want to make yet to accommodate other chucks that I have. Was lookin for a metric gear chart that I saw referenced but could not find it. Can someone direct me please? Also I am missing the 48 tooth gear from the gear set if anyone has an extra one to sell. Could also use a photo of the original knurled nut on the backgear housing that locks the housing to the spyder. I made one as a replacement, but would like to see what the original looks like. Of all the photos I have seen of the lathe and of just the backgear itself, i have never seen this nut pictured. Thanks.

Back gears
I don’t see in the manual how many of each gear came with the lathe. I know I am missing some and would like to complete the set so could someone please tell me. Thanks! Ralph

109 serial number 8
Hello, I am a new member today. I was given a Sears 109.20630 lathe. It is not complete. First of my questions is: where can I find the serial number? I will come back for more questions later. Thank you in advance Dave

109 lathe 3/4"-16TPI faceplate? 3
I have a 109.0703 with a 3/4"-16TPI spindle, a lathe dog, and no faceplate. Anyone know the casting number for the 3/4"-16TPI faceplate? I know B3518 is the 1/2"-20TPI faceplate. I think 218 is the 1/2"-24TPI faceplate. Unfortunately the 109.0703 manuals I can find all are shared with the shorter bed models. So maybe they ignored this faceplate, or, maybe a previous owner replaced the spindle with a custom part.

What is that on the 109? 6
A friend who was cleaning out his warehouse gave me a box of parts, about half of a Craftsman 101 and about some Craftsman 109 bed, a 109 head stock. An attachment was mounted on the bed that I can't identify. It has 3302 stamped on the side. It has groves that perfectly match up to the to the Vs on the 109's bed so I think it was made for that bed. There was a pulley on the shaft and it has a number, AX25 I was hoping someone in this group would know something about the attachment. The bed is in decent shape, there is a carriage and lead screw (no half nut?). Sadly, the base of head stock must have busted. There are no V's left to mount the headstock on the bed. The bearings and pulley seem OK. I would appreciate any thoughts about this 'gift'. Doug Wilson New member heath bed.

Rebuilding a 109 and need some info 3
I picked up a basket case 109 on ebay as a nostalgia project. Model 20630. my first lathe was a 109 and i sold it when i bought my Logan. i suddenly got a notion that i wanted one again after watching Hand Tool Rescue rebuild on on youtube. This pile of parts was rusty and the previous owner gave up on the rebuild, but i am going to get it done. i already have broken down the 3 jaw chuck and spindle that were really stuck together. Now i am working on the tailstock. The tailstock ram is wedged in very tightly by the spindle keyway screw and, probably, some rust. i gave up on trying to get the spindle keyway screw out nondestructively after soaking in penetrant, heat, and easy out failed to get it unstuck. I basically put it on my mill and routed most of main body of the screw and am now easing some smaller drill bits down to get the pin out. i am hoping to save the original threads in the tailstock body but my back out plan is to drill it out larger and thread for a larger screw. But my question is: Can anyone post the original dimensions of this screw for me? Thread pitch, length, and how long the pin is and its diameter. It would be part number A3456 in the manual. I would appreciate it.

Can you guys give me some idea of what this 109is worth 3
I believe that it is an AA-109 Sears lathe made by Dunlop. I paid $300 for one (Too much in retrospect) as even in new shape they have many faults. Otoh they do cut metal albeit slowly. Do not overload the back gearing and be careful of digging in the toolbit as you can bend the spindle! Perhaps a good cheap starter? Bill in Boulder CO USA Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Can you guys give me some idea of what this 109 is worth 4
Hey guys got this as a gift from a relative, I will not be using it and would like to get a rough idea of what to ask for it, I was told it didn't get much use. Thanks for any info.

Metric Threading?
Has anyone used the metric threading chart in the files section? I am trying to set my lathe up for 1.75mm pitch and can't quite figure it out. I think that I need to put an idler gear in there, but I'm having trouble figuring it out. I know that there has got to be a simple solution, but my little brain can't seem to get it. Thank you!

More Questions 7
First, thank you Penn and Wishbone. Penn stuck with me until I realized the error of my thinking about how the gears and drive worked. It doesn't appear that my shaft is bent, a good thing, nor do the bushings appear to be worn. My next question is, the info keeps mentioning a face plate. I don't seem to have one. I have 2 chucks, a 3-jaw and a 4-jaw and both just screw onto the shaft. Do I need a face plate? Then one more question--what is the smallest diameter of the step pulley that came with these? The only one I have starts out pretty big, compared to the ones I see in photos. Oh, and I'm still looking for a maintenance/repair manual. I've looked through all the files shown and find lots of good information but no real manual for assembly, maintenance and repair. Was one ever made?

New old guy with a 109 AA lathe 3
Hi guys, I'll give this a try and see if it goes anywhere. I have a Craftsman 109.2127 I bought several years ago. Don't know much about lathes, just now getting up my nerve to take a whack at this. I don't have any information about maintenance or repair, if any such exist I'd sure like to know about it. My immediate question is, as I understand it, you loosen the socket head screw on the back of the "drum" that houses the planetary back gearset, and if you move it outward it disengages the drum from the gears. If you move the screw and its "nut" toward the center, it engages the plate to which the planetary gears are attached and that's high-speed. But then as far as I can tell, the only thing connecting the step pully to the mainsaft, once disconnected as stated in the first case above, is the setscrew in the step pulley--is that true? Since there's no flat on the shaft, that cupped screw will then just have to dig into the shaft, is what I'm seeing--and then that will not go through the bushings should you need to disassemble without damaging them. Help!

New member looking for info
Hello, I am a woodworker with a fairly complete shop and wood lathe. I was given this 109 lathe, as is and I found a users manual. I know I am missing the gear cover from the machine. There is a broken piece as well the seems to be a tool post wedge. I also can not clamp the tail stock down to the bed so missing a few parts there. I found part numbers for those in the manual. Would I be right to assume all the different years parts are comparable with this machine, or were there many changes/differences throughout those years? I am also hoping to narrow down what year it may have been made and if I am missing any other things? maybe a few gears. I am not overly familiar with working in metals so any info you can share about the machine itself or a better manual. perhaps even some basic operational videos out there as well.

Advice for buying a 109 6
Hi all. I make bamboo fly rods, and at some point, you need to get a metal lathe to do some of the work. I've done a lot of research, and while the Chinese mini lathes are affordable, I'd really rather not go down that road. I like the old iron. My favorite tools were my dad's, some of which he made himself in trade school in the 40s. I know the 101s / 618s were better built, but the ones I could afford are basket cases (literally, in pieces, in baskets), and shipping costs are prohibitive. I know the 109s have limitations and are primarily hobby lathes, but that's what I'm looking for anyways. I'll be turning down the ends of the rod sections to fit the ferrules, turning reel seat inserts, and turning cork grips, all operations not requiring machinist precision. And I'm hoping to learn the basics of machining and repairing and maintaining old iron lathes so I could eventually get into a larger one down the road. I've been looking for a couple months, got outbid on some auctions, and shied away from some truly abused lathes. I know it takes a while to find the right lathe and you should be patient, but is there a reason why there aren't many out there? I live in the Chicago area and while there are some big machines for great prices out here, there are rarely any 109s or 101s. Given that Chicago was Sears headquarters, that's surprising to me. So here's an idea I have. I'm thinking of buying the pieces on eBay hoping that the shipping would be more reasonable and then put it together. Is there a chance that it could end up being a disaster like that Johnny Cash song where he builds a Cadiilac by stealing pieces over 20 years? Anyways, thanks for reading. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Jim

Lathe Drive Pulley -mount to Spindle Shaft- ? 2
Recently pick-up this 6in AA-109 , and I find that the 'Drive Pulley' is certainly missing SOMETHING ! The Reduction (Back Gear Unit) connects to Spindle with the 1/16 Woodruff Key. But what about the primary Drive Pulley ? I have a 1/4-20 set screw 3/8 long (that does NOT contact the Spindle.) The HOLE is only threaded for a short portion , and my Spindle Shaft , shows no appreciable 'Contact Marks' , for anything that would have ever engaged with it !! HELP PLEASE !!
