Most of the material is in files, only 204mb in photos. Personally, I like higher resolution photos. I get more info from them. Naturally, YMMV.

resized to, say, 1024 x 768, which usually results in an image

That sounds like the group is getting close to full (i.e., closing in the 1gb storage limit for free groups) and is set to delete attachments to keep itself going.?
