New Member / Time reporter's Contax II / lens ID?
7
Hi, I've joined ZICG a few weeks ago. I found out about it after completing a book about the journalist Melville Jacoby and looking into the camera he used while covering the early stages of World War II in Asia. The camera was a Contax II. Mel was Time's reporter in China in 1941 (he took over from Teddy White), then in Manila at the end of that year. He and his new wife, Annalee Jacoby (previously Annalee Whitmore and later Annalee Fadiman) were on a Japanese blacklist, so they fled Manila when it fell, then went on to report from Bataan and Corregidor until they fled by boat. The couple were also good friends with Carl Mydans and his wife, Shelley Smith Mydans, who stayed behind in Manila and were captured. Without Mydans, Life turned to Mel to shoot the powerful images the magazine featured of the fighting on Bataan in the spring of 1942. After completing the book, which is titled Eve of a Hundred Midnights, I looked a bit more into the camera(s) Mel used. I thought a fun way to get back into film photography would be to find a camera of the same model and shoot with it as I promote the book. Mel also happened to be my grandmother's cousin and I do have his typewriter, but, alas, as far as I know the camera didn't survive the decades. Happily, he did serial numbers of his photography equipment so his mother could keep a record of it on his behalf for insurance purposes. In one letter after a trip he took with Carl and Shelley, he even wrote about how Carl taught him how to better use the camera ¡ª which he acquired the year before in Chongqing, China¡¯s wartime capital ¡ª noting that he had the same setup as Carl. I¡¯ve started exploring the various resources linked to the ZICG home page, but I haven¡¯t seen everything yet. Mel¡¯s camera¡¯s serial number was B19571, putting it about 1936, correct? The only info I have for the lens is the serial number, but not the model. That S/N was 1862706. However, I have a picture of him with the camera here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hpqocdhnlcokhsz/Mel%20with%20Contax.png?dl=0. I know it¡¯s hard to tell from the photo, but any guesses what kind of lens that is? I¡¯m not sure if he ever noted the type of lens, but I¡¯ll look around. I¡¯m also including a Life picture of Mel with the Mydanses, here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4g2k51l6t4n1w20/color%20mel.jpg?dl=0. In it, you¡¯ll note his case. Am I correct that is an ever-ready (his case¡¯s serial number is 178712)? The light meter was S/n 2009. He wrote that, but perhaps he meant model number? Any thoughts? You might also notice that on the book¡¯s cover (linked here: https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062375209/eve-of-a-hundred-midnights), in a photo taken by Carl Mydans, he¡¯s holding a Contax, though it seems to have a somewhat different back than the other Contax II¡¯s I¡¯ve seen. Happily, I did find a nice circa 1940 Contax II on ebay with a Jena Biogon f2.8 and a Jupiter 50mm lens. I'm really enjoying learning about using a rangefinder and shooting with film, which I haven't done for 14 years or so. However, at some point I'd like to make my setup even closer to Mel¡¯s, so I¡¯d like to find a similar case and the right lens. I already went to China and the Philippines for book research, but if I ever get to go back I¡¯d like to try to reshoot some of the places Mel went as they look today. I have all of Mel¡¯s prints and negatives (or access to the latter; many are at my grandmother¡¯s house). Once I figure out the best way to share a few, I will try to do so. He owned other cameras during his travels, so I¡¯ll have to do a bit more research into which shots were taken with the Contax II, but it¡¯s pretty easy to deduce based on his letters. Finally, I know it¡¯s wishful thinking, but on the very off chance the items with those serial numbers ended up in somebody¡¯s possession, I¡¯d love to talk. ¡® Anyhow, nice to meet you all and thanks for any thoughts you have. -Bill

photos from 4.5 x 6 folders
4
I'm tempted by the portability and cute appearance of the Ikonta A and its relatives, and from what I've seen on the web they're capable of taking excellent photos. But compared with the 6 x 6 format, and given the larger number of photos to a roll, I'm wondering if it would not work out fairly expensive in the long run. I would want to make digital scans of the photos. I have a 3-in-one scanner, but that can't scan negatives larger than 35mm, so I would need to have physical photos to scan. I'm thinking that the photos on the contact sheet would perhaps be too small scanned that way (at 1800 dpi or 3600 interpolated) and I'd need to get enlargements, which would be far more expensive than the contact sheet - whereas 6 x 6 photos might be large enough for decent scan results?. So I'm wondering what folks who shoot 4.5 x 6 photos and digitize them do. -Keith

Nettar 515/2

Oops, I see it's actually a Nettar 515/2, this one in fact: ZEISS IKON NETTAR 515/2 FOLDING 120 FILM CAMERA/10.5 CM F4.5 ANASTIGMAT LENS ZEISS IKON NETTAR 515/2 FOLDING 120 FILM CAME... ZEISS IKON NETTAR 515/2 FOLDING 120 FILM CAMERA/10.5 CM F4.5 ANASTIGMAT LENS in Cameras & Photography, Vintage Photography, Vin... View on www.ebay.co.uk Preview by Yahoo I've given it a quick look over and it seems to be in reasonable working order. Only a couple of issues I can see so far. The bellows are a bit saggy but I can't find any leaks (in a dark room with a keyfob light). What can I use to restore their stiffness? Is the 'Vintage camera bellows restoring renovating fluid' on ebay any good? The mechanical link between the shutter button on the body and the release on the lens has disappeared. All that's there is the rod and spring directly connected to the shutter button. Obviously I can just use the lens shutter release, but has anyone found a simple solution to restore the functionality of the shutter button? -Keith

Introducing myself and my folder craze
I'm a freelance translator from England living in the Netherlands and have decided to get back into film photography. Sometimes this digital stuff is just too easy! And I remember how much I used to enjoy the brainwork and 'playing with a mechanical toy' aspect of manual photography. I've become fascinated by the old 120 folding cameras, some of them are so cute, and from what I've seen on the web they can shoot fantastic pictures. In the pre-digital era I used to take slides and got superb results with a series of 35mm cameras including a Rollei 35B/B35, a Zenit and a Praktica SLR. I used to keep part-exchanging cameras for something 'better'. My new-to-me Ikonta 520/2 has just arrived and I'm looking forward to shooting small numbers of 6x9 photos. I have a couple of questions about it, so will put those in a separate post. -Keith
