Re: New member thoughts
Wes, From the 550 records on the Tenax 2 in my database I estimate a total production of 8,500 Tenax 2 in three distinct (by serial number) batches: E.3000 to E.5000 - 2,000 cameras H.74000 to H.77000 ¨C 2,000 cameras J.88000 to J.91500 ¨C 3,500 cameras
I have had a look in my library for a lens diagram for the Sonnar 4/7,5cm lens but so far without success but I will keep looking. Regards, Simon Worsley

New member thoughts
Hi, All:
I am a serious user of the Tenax II and have run more film through my first Tenax in the last two years than all my other cameras combined. I also tend to pick up odds 'n ends for the Contax. I have used Nikons for over 48 years, and I am the author of the book The Nikon Camera in America, 1946-1953 published by McFarland. Does anyone have a diagram of the lens formula for the 7.5cm Sonnar for the Tenax? Would be the same as the model for the Robot. Simon: What is your latest figure on the number of Tenax II produced? I have several blogs on the Tenax, but need to update them as I learn more. Thank you. WES LODER for e-mail responses, please use my regular e-mail address: MWL2@.... |
Contax serial number anomaly.
I recently bought a Contax III that has me rather puzzled. It has the later type front-plate with narrower engraving and a lower cross-bar on the 'T' of Contax. It seems well cared-for and original and does not appear to have been messed about at all, in fact the only visible screws showing slight "signs of use" are those for the film-gate casting. The serial number is in the usual place at the lower left of the body. The puzzle is that the serial number is Y.59823. As we all know, the first Contax IIs were in the 'Z' prefixes, the first Contax IIIs in the 'A's (though IIs could be converted), and 'Y' was not used again until 1952/3, so where did this 'Y' come from?
Another slight anomaly is that all the body serials I have checked so far read correctly with the lens upwards, but this one reads with the lens down. The back serial is not the same, and has been rather neatly obliterated, and there's no number in the accessory shoe. The camera came with a 1.5 Sonnar that dates from 1937 according to the online lists. It may not be the original, but it was on the camera in 1958 according to receipts. All I can think is that the operative that stamped the serial numbers in the factory, just picked up the wrong punch one day! However, if the number 59823 is correct, then, from the serial number ranges in Simon Worsley's Production Figures PDF, 59823 would only fit in with the 'B' or 'D' serials (early type front-plate) or the 'K's (serial in the accessory shoe). Can anyone think of another plausible explanation? Steve Sheppard. |
Re: Restoring Ikonta 521/16
Hi, its often a case of what you don't do! If the shutter blades snap open a closed nicely on the 'B' setting then that is a good sign; if they are sluggish and have an oily deposit on them then a deeper clean of the mechanism may be needed. The slow speeds can gum up - again a test can give a good indication of accuracy - if the 1 second sounds right then the other speeds should be pretty close. +/- 20% of the indicated speed is only about 1/5th second in reality.
Rick Oleson has published some information on the Synchro Compur shutter below: A good quality thin sewing machine or watch oil should be used to very sparingly lubricate the pivots/bearings of the moving parts; it is really important not to get oil on the shutter leaves or the iris blades. Generally this will get a sluggish escapement working as it should do. If the grease in the front element focussing helix has dried out, a good quality lithium grease can be used sparingly to get it running smoothly. If the shutter is really badly gummed up, all the lens elements need to be removed, the shutter unit removed and the assembly washed out in lighter fuel or a similar non-destructive solvent. In a way, it is better to avoid a camera with a badly gummed shutter unless you are looking for a project! Lens elements can be cleaned with methylated spirit and lens tissues; collimation is straight forward with a ground glass screen against the film guides and a magnifying glass - set the shutter open on 'B' and get a distant object in focus by turning the front element back/forth in the focussing helix.. If the camera has a Rangefinder, ensure that it is also set to infinity and refit the focussing ring (there is generally a slot in that which engages with the tang on the rangefinder ring gear), tighten the grub screw fully before attempting to turn the focus ring. Cheers, Steve |
Restoring Ikonta 521/16
Hello everybody
I'm new in this specific area of folding MF cameras and very enthusiastic about the whole process of restoring. I found several info about dating and fixing the shutters(dew to many year of none use)but i can't find the whole process..of CLA. Does anyone knows or have some kind of info from what lubricant to use to how to collimate the lens? Thanks people for your attention and your acceptance to this fantastic group |

Need help with Zeiss Jena lens mystery.
Perhaps this some of you will know the answer to this, but I am stumped.?
I own a Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f3.5 in "Zebra" style and M42 thread mount. A common lens to be sure.
But here's what has me baffled: The engraving around the front element says "MC Sonnar." The "MC" engraving is in red.
My understanding has always been that the Zebra lenses were not multicoated. Further, that the Zebra lenses were replaced by the all black style. And that the first all black lenses were still single coated--which would seem to eliminate the possibility that this lens is a hybrid of sorts. ?After a while, the all black lenses were multicoated and marked with the "MC" designation.
So how could a Zebra version be multicoated?
It occurred to me that perhaps someone simply switched the engraved ring.
But here's the next odd thing: the serial number is not one of the 5 digit numbers that I have always seen on the black-style lenses. It is a 6 digit number beginning with "144."
Also, the black paint on the barrel seems to match the darker black of the later "black-style" lenses and the orange-red engraving also seems to more closely match that of the later "black-style" lenses.
Finally, it just looks and feels like a newer lens than any Zebra lens I have seen.
Did Zeiss Jena make a limited run of Zebra MC lenses in the late 1970's or in the 1980's??
I would greatly like to know the background of this lens.
Any and all help would be most appreciated.

I have found two source Zeiss Ikon documents (one a German language February 1938 pamphlet, another a French language booklet dated March 1939 entitled 'Camera d¡¯Enregistrement¡¯), it is a 'Registrier-Camera', normally equipped with a 'Graphikon' lens (?) and C0mpur shutter although also available with a Tessar 2.8/8cm lens.
