Hello John
I am sorry to know that the ZHS is finishing its activities but understand very well the reasons of this movements.
I wish you and all members this community a really good future and continuing its interests in all ZEISS matters.
I am gratefull to you and all who contributed to the ZHS and specially to Larry Gubas whose great book on Zeiss and Photography I am still reading and frequently consulting and enjoying.
Thanks also to all the ZHS members and friends.

?

Those of you who are currently members of the ZHS have recently received
a copy of the society's journal (or will soon do so). From this you will
have learned that the ZHS is terminating activities. This issue of the
journal, identified as the Autumn 2016 number, is the last of a run of
38 annual volumes, and the society cannot exist without the journal. I
retired as Editor a couple of years ago when I turned 80 and thought
that15 years in the job was enough; Larry Gubas nobly took over then but
now finds that his rapidly failing health makes it impossible for him to
continue. Repeated calls for volunteers to help run the society have
failed to produce results, so Larry and I decided to call an end to it.

As Treasurer my last job is to somehow eliminate the fairly substantial
bank account in a manner appropriate for a not-for-profit society, when
none of the reserves can accrue to me, to Larry, or anyone else involved
in its management. I have decided to revert these funds in equal shares
to the current members, i.e. those who received a copy of the August
2016 journal. Instructions about how to claim a share were included
therein, and I urge these members to follow instructions and contact me.
I am assuming that several weeks, or even months, will elapse before I
have heard from everybody and can therefore calculate the value of a
share and send out checks.

This is my first post as a new member. Thanks to my friend Rolf Eipper in Vancouver BC ?for connecting me to this group. I have been a camera collector for 50 years, with top Zeiss products of the 30's among my favorites. I also have been collecting the "baby" cameras (4.5 X 6 format) that preceded the Zeiss conglomerate. The Contax I has been a special favorite since I first saw one.

I am thrilled with my recent purchase of a 1934 Contax I outfit with 6 lenses (Including the 300mm), viewfinders, accessories, etc. all in the original fitted case. Mint condition. I am curious how rare this might be. I welcome any comments or advice.?

A photo is at the following link.

https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOS-3kOzXWEfSD4IlRq6wjO9QmRnnQLAdX5V1aK

I believe the only piece missing is a diopter holder that attaches to the accessory shoe. There is a narrow slot next to a the angled viewfinder adaptor and that seems to be the only accessory that would fit. If anyone has one or can lead me to one, I would appreciate that. ?

ABOUT Yahoogroups

Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at

If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.

ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.

---
POSTING TO ZICG

The ZICG list was set up for people who want to discuss anything Zeiss. ZICG is a collection of Zeiss authorities and enthusiasts brought together through the medium of email to share knowledge as friends. Anybody can be a member and nobody has ever been banned.

You cannot send attachments. If you want to share a file, put it on a website and post the URL to the list. Remember that .vcf files (vcards) are classified as attachments. As a member, you can upload photos and files to the ZICG archives with Yahoo and then send notification to the list.

Please do not post HTML or specially formatted messages to the list. If you can, turn off these options on your email program. Some ZICG members cannot read your message if you send it in those formats.

Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

OFFICIAL ZICG WEB PAGE
The official ZICG web site is:

It was created by Thomas Myro. It is well out of date but has some archives from 1997 on it. Nobody has used the classified section for some time now. It is a private web page, not a collectively produced one.

Passwords are:
CONTAPROX for the archives.
PROXAR for the classifieds.

Both in uppercase letters.

WARNING: Thomas's web page has out of date subscription details, it still refers to the Coollist mailing list. That mailing list no longer exists. Please only ever refer to the Yahoo! web page for subscription information.

Sometime in the future it would be great to develop a website made up of contributions from all members of ZICG. This may be something that could be developed through Yahoo's service or via a member with web space to donate.

Re: Zeiss Ikon-Dresden Prototype M42 Sonnar Lens

Slightly out of my comfort zone but for a claimed early prototype lens for the Contax S I am surprised the focal length is marked in 'mm' (millimetres) as most early post-War Carl Zeiss lenses continued the practise of having the lens focal length marked in cm (centimetres).

Regards

Simon Worsley

Zeiss Ikon-Dresden Prototype M42 Sonnar Lens

Hello, I am new to the group, and have a small Zeiss collection so far, but am attempting to buy a full setup for the Zeiss Ikon Contax S camera.?

I have purchased a lens which I would appreciate the groups thoughts on.?It is a apparently a prototype M42 mount Sonnar Lens. The Contax S came with the 58mm f2 Biotar, however there are examples of a Sonnar lens.?

Zeiss-Ikon Dresden Sr 000 Sonnar 1 = 2 F = 58 m m ?T (The T is red)?

Made by Carl Zeiss (Dresden?), prototype lens from around 1948 (maybe earlier) for the new Contax S SLR. Another similar lens can be found in the Technische Sammlungen der Stadt Dresden.

A nearly model Contax S was sold with a Sonnar Lens as well

224: Ur-Contax S, No. 303, 1949

Sold For: €3,200 | Estimate: €1,500 - €2,000

https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/9712352?

However, both of these Sonnar lenses appear different to the one I have purchased. I'd appreciate if anyone has any thoughts or history on this lens. By the way it has a brass barrel, and the paint is very worn. This may be because I have read that the black paint actually was produced by the USSR and when the war started supplies dried up.?

Zeiss ?Tenax II

Re: Tenax II vs Robot Royal III

don't forget that the robot royal came in a 24 x 24 format (as well as an 18 x 24 format) version as well. so, maybe instead of an "apples to oranges" comparison, maybe we can call it a "golden delicious to a northern spy"

Re: Tenax II vs Robot Royal III

You may be comparing apples to oranges. The Robot Royals were full-frame, post-war cameras with modern, coated lenses. The Tenax II was 24 X 24 and pre-war. Most of its lenses were uncoated (although I own a coated 4cm Sonnar). Both cameras should be capable of taking excellent pictures.
??? What might be more important to ask is other characteristics. The Robot Royals are built like tanks. They are heavy. Not the sort of camera to slip in your pocket. The Tenax is compact and relatively light-weight. I can carry one around all day without finding it a burden. If you need the built-in, spring-wound motor, the Robot is the obvious way to go. If you don't need a motor, the Tenax II might be the better option.
??? The Robots might be less expensive. They might have more lens options. They might give better image quality due to the larger format, but if I wanted all those characteristics, I would just as soon use a Nikon. I like the Tenax for what it does offer: fast action, easy handling and excellent pictures taking. Hope this helps, WES

Tenax II vs Robot Royal III

Zeiss Ikon ?Tenax II ?and ?Robot Royal ?model III are nice looking camera,

which one has better image quality with their standard lens ?

CZJ Flektogon 20mm/4 image quality

How does ?CZJ ?Flektogon 20mm/4 lens compares with other similar

wide angle lenses ?

Zeiss Ikon Messy naming convention

enax ?was ? a 24x24mm ?subminiature camera

Then they called a ?24x36 ?miniature camera also as Tenax

Contaflex was once a twin lens reflex

Later it became ?SLR.

What a mess.

Re: Book on Tenax II

It will be a printed book¡ªI will probably go through BLURB. I need to determine number of pages and number in a first run. That will determine cost of each copy in the first run. Thanks for your interest. WES

Re: Book on Tenax II

I'd be interested. How will you offer it, as a pdf or as a printed book?

Re: Olympia Sonnar for Contax RF on eB*y

Another example of the direct mount 180 f/2.8 has surfaced on ebay. Sadly with a price tag way out of reach for me. It hasn't stopped me admiring the photos of it though. FYI.
