Weather Report Content 3
Hi all, Just thought I'd mention that I've been doing pretty regular posts on my Weather Report website (about once a month or so), which you may not be aware of and my find intersting. The most recent one remembers Weather Report's 1972 tour with the rock group Santana. You can sign up to receive emails when new posts are made if you wish. Anyway, here's the website url: https://www.weatherreportdiscography.org/weather-reports-one-and-only-tour-with-santana/ Cheers, Curt

Zawinul Syndicate - One People - Live Remastered 26
...hi Zawinul Fans -hope there are still a few out there who are still listening ! One People - Live Remastered I have just found this on iTunes - it is an air shot of the Zawinul Syndicate at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town North London UK, from around 1990, I still have a cassette recording of the original FM broadcast. The gig happened in the summer, but wasn't broadcast until either xmas eve or new years eve...i just checked the cassette and unusual for me, I didn't write the date on it...I haven't listened to the whole iTunes download recording yet, I will get back to you on that. I traded many copies of my cassettes in the 80's and 90's and a few of them turned up on sugar-megs...which disappointed me as I traded in good faith and didn't expect people to print CD's from them and sell them...more fool me... ...anyway, I am wondering if this is a remastered copy of my cassette...I wont know until i listen and see if the tape break is on it match my recording -tape breaks because I had to flip the cassette...from memory the show was 60 mins... On the plus side - it was a good gig, worth the ?6 download...and there were a couple of guest players if i remember rightly...Hossam Ramzy on Dumbeck, a very well regarded percussionist in the UK... ...has this been formerly released before?? speak soon best Steve

OMG - another one - well new to me anyway...
...hi guys, ...the story so far, I was reminded a couple of days ago, by my google calendar, that it was the anniversary of Joe Zawinul's funeral, 25th Sept 2007, so I decided to do a quick search to see if there had been any new releases from the Zawinul Foundation etc and I found a release of the Zawinul Syndicate on an obscure label, of a gig I have on cassette from 1990, One People, see previous post for details. Well that generated a few comments, so I had a second look and found another 'new to me' release on iTunes, it is a Weather Report gig listed as 'Live in Georgia 1980' by 'We Weather Report'...this is an audience recording but worthy of a purchase...see another previous post for those details... AND - third time lucky, I found another, but some of you guys might have already seen or heard of this this? Again on iTunes...Weather Report - Inception '71...the cover pic is from the the gig they did in Germany or Austria back in 1971, when they were joined by John Surman and a couple of other European horn players...they did Dr Honouris Causa etc...this release / recording is a live gig from that period, it doesn't include the extra players, but it is a professional live mix, I think a bit more reverb has been added recently ( gives it a bit of an ECM sound ), but that in my opinion doesn't do any harm? It is the Zawinul / Shorter / Vitous version with Eric Gravat and Dom Um Romau, there's no info, but I have many recordings official and otherwise from those days but I don't have this one -well not to this mix quality anyway...I think I remember a discussion after 'Elegant People' the book came out about a gig with tracks listed as 'Firefish' and 'Early Minor' -someone questioned the titles? apart from those two, everything else here are titles that appeared on the first album, Waterfall, Morning Lake, Umbrellas, Orange Lady and Eurydice...but they are recordings I don't think I have...the clarity of the recordings here are exceptional...again -for me, another ?7.99 well spent ;-) ...if any one has any specific info about this release I'd love to hear it...to these ears it's not Live in Tokyo, Ossaich or etc, let the discussion begin ;-) best wishes Steve

...another one ! 2
...hi guys, ...we have a saying in the UK about 'buses' "...you can wait ( by a bus-stop ) all day ( for bus ) and then two come along at the same time ! ...well, some of you saw my post about a Zawinul Syndicate download on iTunes called One People, today I thought I would check to see if there was anything else I missed, and I found this - released June 2022 on iTunes 'Live in Georgia 1980' by We Weather Report - it's not a typo - We Weather Report...its an audience recording but the gig is good...it is Joe & Wayne with Peter Erskine, Jaco and Bobby Thomas Jnr...I don't have any other info and I haven't followed it up -it's ?7.99 for 8 tracks but this starts with 8.30 with Jaco on drums, it melts into Sightseeing which isn't listed but you can hear the change as Peter Erskine takes over, if you were at any of the gigs on this tour you will remember they started the show that way that tour...the quality of the recording s not great, sounds like a single point stereo mike on a Sony Walkman Recorder to me -definitely is an audience recording, it sounds like its been through a bit or compression but the high frequencies are a bit of a strain on the ears -however, i don't have this one in my collection so that's ?8 i'm happy to give it to iTunes...obviously if you have Apple Music you will be able to stream it...the only downside is that Joe & Wayne would have played a duet -sadly that has not been included, but there's lots of great ensemble playing...enjoy if you've a mind to... best wishes Steve

Birdland again, now back to 1972!
Hi all, The following comment is based on this release: https://www.discogs.com/release/7936589-Weather-Report-The-Agora-Columbus-Ohio-October-17th-1972 Still having in mind that Joe had in fact already way before 1977 some riffs that would end in Birdland, I came to hear another one, pushing this time the puzzle back to 1972! I know, it's short but when you hear it, you're not in doubt; it's on track 2-4 (for those who have another version, the impro following Dr. Honoris Causa) at 4:20 ..... sharpen your ears and feel free to comment, cheers! Birdland 2
Hi guys, Hope ya'all goin' fine and healthy! Wintertime and cold temperatures, slower business activity, finally gave me plenty of time to read Curt's book, an excellent reading filled with a lot of pleasure and - faithful to WR's tradition - experimentation. I got in mind to read the book while playing at the same time the records associated to the chapters I was reading; if it went too fast, I would either supplement with live stuff from that same period and ... this was a lot of fun, having me to in fact listen back to all the band's official output! And while I was doing this, I crossed something I wanted to share with you. I hadn't been aware of it before or even thinking of it but I found out that premises of Weather's hit Birdland already can be heard back to 1975! It happened while I was listening to the Live and Unreleased double CD. Listen to CD2's last track and at around 6:15, you clearly hear Joe playing what would become the tune's intro riff, later characterized by Jaco's harmonic's trade mark. Joe repeats it a few times before the tune moves on back to the Dr. Honoris Causa / Directions motive. Maybe it's already known since long but I had never conscienceously thought of it before. I had also stumbled upon another live ocurrence of it (can't remember which) and finally today fell upon by pure chance on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjLITRTqNTo (already at 0:30) so it has certainly been in the can many times, as a programmed part in the playing, not just a one-off improvisation. Closing with a little comment on Curt's book. After having been accustomed to the track by track analysis and listing of players following, I was somehow wondering why - on the Black Market chapter - exception was made and tracks were dissecated as usual but without no mention of Jaco's name until quite late on the chapter (this for non afficionados). Curt, was there a specific reason behind? In any case many many thanks for the great passionate job and helping me to go through winter :-) Cheers everyone, Pierre

My New Weather Report Book 17
Hi all, I wanted to let you know that my new book, Elegant People: A History of the Band Weather Report, is now available for pre-order, with a June 15 publication date. This book has been years in the making, and its publication is timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Weather Report's debut album. In the process of writing it, I interviewed or corresponded with over eighty individuals connected with the band, including nearly all of the musicians who performed with Weather Report either live or on record. Some of them spoke about their time with Weather Report for first time. More details are at my Weather Report website here: https://www.weatherreportdiscography.org/elegant-people-a-history-of-the-band-weather-report/ You all are among the first to know. :-) Best, Curt

Weather Report Live Performance Database 2
Greetings Zawinul fans. It's good to see this list revived on groups.io. I wanted to let you know that I have added a live performance database to my Weather Report site. Here's the link to the post I made describing the database: https://www.weatherreportdiscography.org/introducing-the-weather-report-live-performance-database/ Of course, I am happy to include additions or corrections, or supporting documentation. European performances are particularly difficult for me to document, so any help in that regard would be appreciated. Cheers, Curt
