Re: Dilemma

["do I cut out the solder joints, remake new flex track and make modified joiners that will line up the tops of the rails where the two different codes meet?"]

In my opinion this solution is better and BTW, it is the one recommended in every modelrailroad building tips book..?Emoji

Re: Dilemma

Edited

Mike,
Thank you very much for your Post.
===

I have had to begin all over again....Several Times.
I'm Shocked !

to find that Gauge is not to Scale.

And at age 68, one might believe I have begun to stop learning....

Code 40 vs Code 55.
What difference does it make to your Layout's Observers?

Last Night ...
Or is it all about the money?
>> I ordered MORE TRAIN STUFF !
Yes, the Code LASTCHANCE played with my mind and a shot at 10% less or near free shipping did me in.
I tend to spend to the point of shipping cost is offset by a 10% overall discount, and then begin to spend a bit more; just cause I am cheap.
Or Stupid?
Too stupid, not to pass up a deal.?
Even to the point of being further dumb in order to make my own deals?

Is 8 inches enough?
I have a 8 inch tall Coolant Tower next to me, which is part of a larger Power Plant Scenario, dating back in separated/interchangeable modules to the 19th Century.
So back to the Twin Cooling Towers circa 1978 and again in 2021, as Nuclear Power is set for a Comeback; with additional safety protocols.

To What Scale are they ?
Shall they be lighted?
Why does the steam have a Orange/Yellow Glow?
> Should I add twin Just Plug lights to the interior of each tower in Yellow and Orange ?
Do they need brass detailing such as Brass Walks and Brass Caged Ladders ?
How to modify their plastic to sustain the actual use of Steam Rising from Twin Tea Kettles below.
Ah?
When should I begin to stop spending money on these damn things?

How to model at a Distance of say 45 feet diagonally, as a First Observer's Sight is to be drawn across the expanse of the layout.
Or should I be using the term ...
MY LAYOUT ?!
Cause no Club would have me as a Member - Groucho Marx.

They need to stand next to each other....along with Shrubbery and Tall Electrical Towers.
To Scale ?
Good Luck with that !

Thank You for Your Service!

I am no longer an N Scaler...I am a Née Gauger from Code 40 Rail on up.

This in itself is a Dilemma, as so much is riding on the use of Code 55, as a base for all model railroading.

Yet?
I want the two level effect, as did the Knights who formerly said Née.

But does anybody really care?
Does anybody even notice the detail and work one must attribute to the Hobby, when deciding to embrace Code 40?

As a Project Manager....
How does one explain an additional $130 just for the additional lighting for the Twin Towers, to the Head Office?
Just cause there was a Discount Code...and there won't be another till at least January .
===
===
Got a Test ?
So here is how I am gonna do it.
Juxtaposition

I am equipping each Coolant Tower with More Money.
They will change heights to each other.

I mean wye should I have all the fun?

By equipping each with an ESU Servo Motor and an ESU Switch Pilot.

I can change their heights by nearly an inch in either direction.

Will anybody notice ?
Does anybody else really care what Code of Rail I use for My Layout?

My Theory is....
Do the same for Sillt City.
(Conglomeration model of the SF Bay based a bit on Quinntopia)
TransAmerica Building versus SalesForce Mega Structure, both constructed on Silt and Landfill.
Which is Taller?
On My Layout, they will change their height levels.....
But it's Trick Question.

They are both sinking.

Gives a different meaning to the words...Stand by Me.

When the night comes and the land is dark....and the moon is the only light we'll see.
(My Grandmother survived the 1906 SF Fire and Earthquake)

Will you notice the detail on my Twin Coolant Towers ? and their many lights.

Down to two figures standing on top, flying a Drone.

Cause Nobody cares.

Well, except one of my Cats; named YoNa (Little Bear in Cherokee)

The cat sniffs and closely examines every bit of progress to my layout.
>> She notices even subtle height differences.

Probably too small for even Z.

Yet the Twin Towers of the Heljan/Con Cor Nuclear Power Plant in HO or N Scale are the same height.
WRONG at 4 inches....
And yet it was all allowed to go further on to market.
I am probably wrong too at 8 inches.
(Prototype Height per Rancho Seco Tower at 420 feet is closer to 31.5 inches,)
====
Wouldn't this be a hoot....
I complete an N Scale Layout with N Scale Kits and such...Only to discover, the entire layout is actually closer to Z Scale.
Should I add a third rail to my hand laid Code 40 and call it Nn3/Dual Gauge or has it been Z Scale all along?

:)) Mark

Dilemma

Doing up a 2x4 layout, I decided to hand lay my own turnouts. After making the six turnouts that I needed, I put it together with the MTL flex track that I had and was planning on using for the rest of the straight and curved track... well the turnouts looked clunky next to the MTL. Though they both were close to code 55, the hand laid rails were wider and just didn't look right.

So off I went and made up 6 code 40 turnouts... they look much better together... ahhhh but wait, the turnouts are now code 40 and the flex track is code 55 (sort of)... and they don't level out. Their tops don't line up. And of course I didn't notice until AFTER I had soldered a few of the joints.

So here is the dilemma. Do I just grind down the higher rail on the MTL code 55 as a transition and move on or do I cut out the solder joints, remake new flex track and make modified joiners that will line up the tops of the rails where the two different codes meet?

So after all this, I think I've answered my own question.? I'm going to go the route of cutting out the bad solder joints. Being a past Project manager I know the fallout from this poor planning effort, there is going to be a lot of explaining to do at the head office, not to mention the delay to the wife's Christmas display.

Née Scaler > I found a use for my HO Scale Baden Baden Train Station.

A funny think happened on my way to create an Z Scale Layout.
I just happened to take a Twice Look at my N Scale Baden Baden Train Station with the concept of my circa 1931, propeller driven Z Scale locomotive in front of it.

(I had rejected it previously as being far too small, so opted for the HO Scale Version which measures out to a scale of 1:130 but on the short side as to foot print.)

Then I began to consider Shrubbery.

but there is one small problem....
Slightly higher than the previously purchased shrubbery....or to another scale.
I am now a Née Scaler, or former Scaler who is first considering the Code of the Rail, the locomotive sits upon.
As well as the Shrubbery which surrounds the rail.

Oops~!
I had thought to seek a respite from Code 40 for my N Gauge Layout; I am now considering it for my not so simple Z Scale Wannabe Layout in my Coffee Table.
Code 30? Please tell me know.
:<)) Mark

Okay...You guys have me convinced...I's got to know.

I bought a Z Scale Locomotive with the Propeller on one end, a couple of years ago.
Soon after I purchased these Twin Train Rooms.

Not sure my motivation.
Well, I understand the Twin Train Rooms, I wanted such a space from 1959, when I had a HO Layout up the street and around the corner in a nearby basement at 6 years old.
I had some issues in must learning to place a Model Railroad on a 5x9 Table.

But I also own a Coffee Table with a Glass top which has three drawers in it.
The top drawer could be a used for a simple circle and perhaps one turnout.
It pulls out and would be simply to model in.
==
Honestly, I hope my modeling of Z Scale becomes limited to just the coffee table... for that is how I began N Scale in 1969,
Even at those days while in College; I still had the intention of a larger layout.

Viewing such spectacular Z Scale Layouts has shook up my Reality a Bit.
It's difficult to find such layouts in N Scale.

I am in a effort now to hand lay Code 40 in N Gauge, ...but I also need a break from such tedious work.
Hence, as soon as I measure the inside perimeter of the Coffee Table I am purchasing Z Scale Micro Train MTL Track for my new foray into model railroading.

I hope I don't enjoy Z Scale too much.
:)) Mark

Re: Largest Z Scale Layout of record at 16x10 feet ?

For those of a European bent, there’s a free e-magazine called Trainini which is a worthwhile read and is published in German with an English version coming out some weeks later.

Re: Largest Z Scale Layout of record at 16x10 feet ? I risk failing in Z Scale.

Klan,
Your reply first made me smile as I read it....and then the end.

Oh...get ready to open your pocketbook.?

Made me burst with laughter, nearly scared my cats.
===
===
I am already a Quasi Marklin Follower, having spent 7 years in School in an attempt to learn German.
Tell me, do these Z Clubs in France and Italy have any women members?

Okay, I'll?do it.

And ?
I run an ESU ECoS...AFTER I had tried everything else: MRC, NCE, Digitrax and even an ESU/Bachmann Dyn-a-missed.

>>?
Oh...get ready to open your pocketbook.?

Oh Please Don't Tempt Me!?
For some weird Covid Reason, the prices of N?Scale have gone to as high as 5 times my original cost.
Should I sell my plethora of Brass N Scale too ? and Go Z Scale?

>>> To do what you see on Z scale layouts and to add so much realism is nothing but spectacular. ?<<<
So Please....Tell me it ain't so...That the Z Scale SP Cabforwards can actually run.

Cause?despite what you may read in the funny papers, the only N?Gauge Cabforwards which does actually operate is the Nakamura one from 1984.

The rest are just for derailing, glitching and cursing at.
Don't expect them to run.

I got an IM Model for $75, the previous owner bought one to impress his Father IN Law.
He takes it fresh out of the box...and it doesn't go a foot when it stops and glitches.
Then falls over.
His Father in Law, said Putz and then left the Tran Room.
He nearly threw the model at me.
Here's $75...Want to impress your Father N Law....Pay for Dinner!

Then two more were basically thrown at me (Cheap), Yet?
I don't seem to learn no better neither.
But I read the brochure....!

Today, you can read nearly anything you want abut anything....Doesn't make it true however.

Duh? You'd think we could learn.
Reading Comprehension, seems to be a thing of the past.

The Loco-Yokos at the now closed Train Store were often after me to sell all my N Scale and go O Scale or even HO.
You are getting older and as your eyes go and hands, you should consider a larger scale.

Maybe it's time you begin to think about O Scale ?

So I threw myself out of the Train Store.

Tempted me though, as I have begun a Run for both HO and O around the perimeter of my Train Room up on a sort of 8 inch wide shelf.
(I am too cheap and too stupid not to pass up great deals in HO and O Gauge too.)
But I may dabble in Z Scale, just to be able to say....

Those who do Z Scale are better modelers than I.

>>>
To do what you see on Z scale layouts and to add so much realism is nothing but spectacular. <<<
Where I might be a very good N Gauge modeler, I risk failing in Z Scale.
I ain't that brave; but I am cheap.

Before the Grace of God !
Please Great Spirit...
Do NOT allow a Z Scale Cabforwards to pass before me, on the?cheap; as you have so done with Nakamura?Cabforwards, so many times: for as?low as $300.

I's know nothing about birthing no Z Scale, and I don't want to be slapped. Well, except maybe by a French Woman.
Ever been slapped by a French Woman? It's like a whole other Cultural Phenomenon.
Kind of refreshing actually.
:)) Mark

I am considering Joining Z Scale Clubs, just so I can steal their ideas and watch their skills.
Gives a different meaning to...
I could never join a club which would have me as a member. - Groucho Marx.
Sometimes I am known as Groucho Mark

Re: Largest Z Scale Layout of record at 16x10 feet ?

Hi Mark,

Buckle up. Your scenery skills are about to be challenged. To do what you see on Z scale layouts and to add so much realism is nothing but spectacular.
And this is only in the USA-style layouts and trains. You have the entire European layouts in German, French, Switzerland, UK and, Italy. Pick your poison.
I've met and talked to a number of Z scale hobbyists and come away overwhelmed by the knowledge they have of electronics and creative solutions.
Join the Marklin club and subscribe to Z track magazine. Oh...get ready to open your pocketbook.?

Re: Largest Z Scale Layout of record at 16x10 feet ?

Thank you all,
I am very impressed with these Z Scale Layouts,
They remind me of the reason, I was first attracted to N Scale in 1969, having been an HO modeler for 10 years.
> Mountains, Valleys and Trees; with an occasional river or stream.
These landscaped layouts are spectacular without the need for high costs in structures.
==
I don't mean this as a put down nor even a brief attempt to tell Others what to do with their personal or club layout, but I did purchase upwards of 25 Other People's Layouts between 2012 and 2017.
I have an idea on what creates an operational layout and which often fails, to be left in the original boxes.
Simply putting down track, surrounded by Mountains, Valleys and Trees is often a sure winner.
>>> There are times, when I wish; I would listen to myself; however.
My third order in the past 30 days, arrived from Modeltrainstuff today.
Oops! ...again.
:)) Mark

Yes, I bought the Shirt:

The largest Z scale layout is Rob Allbritton’s. It is massive. Rob is actually expanding it. It has been featured on shows as well as in many magazines. Here are a few links:

The reasons I am asking are many.
There is a pre-disposition in N Scale to think in terms of minimal radius but hence also a maximal radius of 19 inches.
There are some N Scale Locomotives which will not run on a 19 inch radius, even without a train behind it.
They need a minimal of 22 inches to operate at all, and with a train behind them; begin to show some promise at 24 inch radius.
The longer the train, the longer the cars; the more need for wider radius and longer switches.
===
Another reason, I want to see what other Modelers are doing with larger areas for their layout; beyond the proverbial 4x8 in any scale.
> Basically anything larger than 8x16.
Here is an HO Layout I purchased in that size...

and I found it wanting (as did the previous owner) for Cabforwards Operations.
I was to cut it down the middle and hoist it up to my attic above.
Then add at least two feet to the middle, widening the radius all around.
Didn't happen.?
Shortly after all this, the house was robbed and I was attacked.
Prompting me to buy yet another house in a different neighborhood with Twin Train Rooms.
(One was to be HO the other N Scale.)
> The HO Layout above didn't survive the move and began to break into pieces.
Now both rooms are being fitted out to N Scale.
==
Further,?
I now model in modular, despite the large spaces, for easy movement and changes to life.
Most of my modules are 16x24 inches but I am beginning work on one which is based on 48x48 inches.

Re: Rokuhan uncoupler track piece #Track

On the Rokuhan video (), you can see the uncoupler pop up when the Controller acivates. Then the loco passes and leaves the freight.
Does yours pop up?
Does a single cars coupler 'catch' it and get pushed to the side? (activate the uncoupler in the middle of the Loco (or test car).

Re: Rokuhan uncoupler track piece #Track

Yes, I'm OEM on all my track.

I can't for the life of me figure out what is happening. Taking them apart is not for the faint-hearted'. Well, I drop in some new uncoulplers I have and keep tinkering with my NOS pieces. Appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Kian
