I bought two styles on Amazon. The double hole is really strong. The piece of fabric I poked through there is NOT coming out until you push the button. Connie

Help! 13
My machine is not working. The needle thread is getting caught in the race (the part below the needle plate) and then is breaking. It makes a horrible noise when this happens and then I get a giant tangle. In case you think this is because I cleaned it, it isn’t. I’ve sewn 6 masks today and was on the seventh one when this happened. I’ve opened up the works again and cleaned it (per the troubleshooting manual), inserted the needle, replaced the needle, replace the bobbin, and it is still happening. I also reduced the needle thread tension. Nothing is helping. When I try to pull up the bobbin thread, the needle thread is getting caught in there. I can’t see anything out of whack but what do I know? it is a Janome. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

What a Thursday! 59
Thursday is our regular shopping day. I avoid the “senior hour” (7 am) because I have heard that it is crowded beyond redemption. I went last week at 8:30, 9 o’clock the week before. Based on those two experiences, I set out at 5 of 9 for the hunt and gather trip. 1 aisle in, I actually said “back the *F* up to and older woman who was shopping with a second person (what?) as she encroached. Hey! I’m waiting patiently for the person in front of me. You can wait for me. (Saw the same person further in totally disregarding the one-way signage!) Managed to get everything I need, but the Instacart folks really act as though they are the only ones in the store. Blocking all the aisles. Not maintaining 6’ of separation. I know that they are working, but . . . I am back home. Counter is disinfected. Floor is next. I am ready to sit and relax for a bit. Last night I did my virgin foray into the e-book options at our regional library network’s website. Yay! New books to read. Downloaded 2 books to my Kindle and have 8 more on wait list. I am using a list from the New York Public Library of the most checked out books of 2019. Rain predicted for today and the wind is picking up. Wishing all of us in the storm’s East Coast path a safe day. Today is Younger Son’s 41st birthday. He got himself a present (photo attached if it comes through). Her name is Roxy. She’s 4 months old. Trip down memory lane and other musings 3
I think I mentioned that I have been going through my mother's sewing stash looking for white thread. I don't know if I said that I found her hankies and used some of them for pockets on the masks. Today I went through her button stash and found buttons for my hemp top. 4 buttons will be visible so they needed to match. The rest will be hidden so don't need to match but need to look nice should I wear it open as a light jacket. Unfortunately, I made the fabric too wide (better than too narrow, I guess). So I have to cut two pieces lengthwise (warpwise) as well as of course, widthwise (weftwise) to make it the right size. It needs to be 23" of fabric total before seaming and I have fabric that is 10" wide. I can go up to about 25" and increase the seam allowance since my fabric is much lighter weight and gauzy than the pattern I'm sort of following. All this means more planning because I think I need 7" width in the center for the neck width. I may end up doing it asymmetric like the original -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

masks and such 8
I am fast running out of fabric! In the Bin Where I Keep Potential Weaving Stuff, I found a pair of scrub bottoms that Mark wore home from the hospital in December. (He was transported via ambulance during a middle of the night—think wearing just the stuff he sleeps in—during an acute asthma episode.) So I washed and pressed, cut around the rips and stains, and am using that fabric to make lovely soft masks. But I am about done. I’ve browsed several fabric sites looking for more fabric, and have decided that I’ve done my part. Will keep a few extras on hand, and rise to the occasion if need be, but I am closing in on 300. Flour - Castle Valley Mill 20
Who was handing out the link to this mill in Doylestown? Was it Lise? Melisande? All I can say is thank you! I ordered both 10 lbs of whole wheat and 10 lbs of bolted whole wheat on Friday and it was on my doorstep on Saturday! Of course Doylestown isn’t far, but still that’s amazing turnaround. It was especially great to support a local business, and get something that was hard to find generally at a really fair price. Now to bake it all up. Anmiryam

Spring walks 21
For anyone not on Facebook (and apologies to those who’ve seen this) we had a good, legal “lockdown walk” in local woods at the weekend and managed to see the bluebells in full bloom. We’ve been blessed with glorious weather for most of the last 7 weeks and DH was home for all that time. First time he’s been home for seven consecutive weeks since 2010! He’s now back in Geneva as his office there has reopened. Very quiet here now, just me, Freddie and Ellie the tabby. Now the weather is better she has resumed her old habit of stealing other people’s silky undies from washing lines. At least I hope she’s not going into their houses to snatch stuff…..on the other hand she seems to have a few new cat-toys now which I certainly did not buy! Jenny

Strange Experience on io and Bread Flour 8
Well this is a potpourri of topics, but here goes. 1. The 开云体育 site was down this morning, just presenting a log in page, but it wouldn't accept my login. I decided to attempt to log in with my gmail account, which I don't use often. Because it's a different email addy from my usual sewgood5 email, it treated me as a applicant for membership. I then went back to my gmail and it was "down for maintenance" which was the message I received on groups.io last night. Went to io. to have them send me a link to log in. Unsuccessful again. Went back to their link to log in and it magically worked. All my groups in place, no problem. So, Jaya, if you see a member request from me with an easley gmail account, just forget it. I think it's all de-bugged at this point. 2. Bread Flour: I found the discussion of shortage of bread flour and sourcing really interesting. I no longer bake bread much, but we certainly do crank out the pizza dough for every Friday night's pizza extravaganza. Out of curiosity, I decided to see if my Lowe's Foods in Southport had bread flour and it is sold out. In fact I almost mistook the entire flour section as the section for disinfectants b/c it was so bare. Today I'm in Raleigh to fulfill some appointments and I thought I'd check Wegman's: No Bread Flour. None. A nationwide shortage of bread flour. I am amazed. Are Americans really baking that much bread? Certainly more brean than the customary 40-50 hour work week plus commute time would allow, but enough to cause a shortage? It's impressive. No shortage of meats in Raleigh, not even the lamb or veals. NC has lots of pork and chicken processors in rural counties and I read today that some of the pork producers have been hit hard with the virus. That's frightening. I'm heading back to Southport tomorrow, but it was like a tonic to lay eyes upon my son and daughter. I've missed them so much. It just felt so good to be able to talk and laugh with them. We humans are not wired to be without live human interaction. This is so shallow in light of the gravity of the times, but I was amazed to find that my son had actually kept all of my plants alive. I wasn't expecting that. Our infection curve is still rising, but flattening out, yet we are slowly opening back up, and I am very nervous about it. I'll be the old fogey staying home. However, it is reassuring that most everyone is wearing masks. The outliers tend to get the "stink eye" from those wearing masks and are given a wide berth as they pass. It makes me think of this funny, simple, but crude way of explaining just why masks work: 1. Two men face each other a few feet apart. Neither is wearing pants. Both pee. Each is peed on by the other. 2. Two men face each other a few feet apart. One is wearing pants and the other is not. Both pee. The man wearing pants is peed on by the other man. 3. Two men face each other a few feet apart. Both are wearing pants. Both pee. Neither is peed on by the other. A very direct analogy indeed. One of my girlfriends lives in Oakwood, a downtown Raleigh neighborhood near the Gov's Mansion. Last week the neighborhood had all of these men in army gear with machine guns (AR 15?) and side arms rolling through their neighborhoods in trucks, shouting and honking horns. My friend said it really put her on edge and was scary. No police anywhere. The same day, one of the OpenNC people led a group to crash through the SW gate of the Gov's Mansion. That's pretty unbelievable. Strange times. Mary Mary.

Learned a lot about my sewing machine today
I finished sewing my hemp top today. When I went to switch to zigzag to stabilize the handwoven fabric before cutting, I suddenly saw that I have a number of straight stitch options. I have one that locks at the beginning and end of the seam and one that does reverse automatically at the beginning and the end. I used the one that reverses and found it works quite well. It solved the problem of trying to reverse while holding down the button and manipulating the fabric. I will try the lock option the next time I sew. While I was reading the manual (something I only did at the beginning and when I was troubleshooting), I realized that there is another presser foot with a button to lock the level to go over fat seams. I tried it on the hem of the top and it works much better to go over the thicker seams. It is called a zigzag foot. The other one that I was using is called the satin foot. I liked the satin foot a little bit more because it is transparent so you can see more of the fabric. But this one works far better for sewing over seams. Who knows what else I'll discover the next time I sew? The top came out great. I now have to finish weaving the trim to sew it on and finish the top. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Playing question 4
I’m almost done spinning singles from a project I started at least 2 years ago. I’m using my matchless with the high speed whorl and high speed bobbins to make a fine yarn. As a two ply it looks like a light fingering/heavy lace weight. When I ply, would I also continue to use the high speed whorl and bobbins? I wondered if it would add too much twist. I only have two high speed bobbins so just planning whether I need to rewind the singles so I can do the plying. Steph

Imagi-knitting and need some advice 4
I’ve been imagi-knitting (aka planning) my version of the Big Swan Bohus design. This has black and brown swan ‘feathers’ around the neck in a yoke and at the cuffs. The original design is a boat neck pullover. Boat necks look awful on me and I have a number of Bohus pullovers already (and some non-Bohus ones). https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-swan---svanen This is one of my favorite designs and I want to make a very classic cardigan that I can wear for years to come. But I don’t want the button band to interrupt the yoke design. Another Bohus knitter has done a version of the Large Lace Collar with a facing that she knit at the same time as the body. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/AsaW/large-lace-collar I think I want to do the same BUT I also don’t want ribbing at the bottom and neck. At first I thought I’d do a hem but the thought of trying to knit buttonholes in both the hem and the facing and the front at the same time (top and bottom would have this problem with a mitred hem/facing) and trying to position it correctly is daunting. I then moved on to doing an icord hem and neckband (I love the effect of the black at the neck) and doing the folded facing with buttonholes in it. This will work if I start with a provisional CO and then do an icord BO where I BO the facing at the same time as the body at the neck and hem. BUT, I suddenly had this brilliant idea. I got it from WeaveKnitWear from the top that I am using as a base for my hemp top. In that book, the author has you knit a strip with buttonholes all the way down (it is essentially a strip of buttonholes) which gets sewn on to the front and you use the closest hole to where you position the button. No planning of buttonholes! It also results in invisible buttons when the tunic is buttoned up because the band is sewn to the underside of the overlapping front. I don’t want to do that on my Bohus but what I thought was that I could put the buttonholes only on the facing so that the buttons are hidden. If I wear it unbuttoned, the buttons will show but if I button it up, they won’t. What do you think? I think this will work and will be less effort overall than a folded over hem at the neck and bottom. I tried to think of all different ways to do a hem where I wouldn’t have the double bulk of the fold and the facing at the top and bottom and the only other choice is to fold over the facing and make the hem at the top and bottom start after the facing width is accounted for. Then the facing would fold over and be stitched down. And the hems would fold over and be sewn to the edge of the facing. But then I wouldn’t have a fold at the facing and that would look different from the rest of the hem - right in the front where it is most visible. Thoughts and other ideas are welcome. I want to start swatching so am trying to get everything down that I need to swatch to do the planning right.-- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

More on masks 18
I dyed 6 masks last night after dinner. So far so good. The water rinsed clear and there are no colored drips on the rag I put under them to dry. I think they look weird because you can see the flowers overdyed with blue - the green leaves are sort of a lime color but not bright. The blue flowers are sort of purple - again you have to look closely at the fabric to tell. But they are blue from a distance. Once i get my next shipment of elastic, I am done with this,. Today i am going to mark, stabilize (sew) and cut my hemp top out and baste the seams so I can try on for adjustment. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Proud as a peahen! 9
Today was supposed to be graduation day for Younger Son (Liam). He has finished his 3 years at Seton Hall Law School and is entitled to add JD to his name and be called Esquire. We had big plans for graduation that have all fallen through. It’s not even happening virtually ?. But he’s a lawyer all the same. Then shortly after we congratulated him, we received word that the Army promotion list is out and Older Son (Brendan) has been promoted to LT COL! Quite a day for our kids and their proud parents! Anyone need a free programmer? 3
My nephew is looking for something to do over the summer. He is in high school and is learning Python and other stuff on his own. He would like to offer his services to someone who wants some coding done and/or some data analysis. If you know of a small to mid-sized business that could use him, let me know and I'll pass his resume along. He is not expecting payment. He just wants to do something that he thinks is fun and learn while he is contributing. He's contacting local businesses but I'm also spreading the word because this can be done for any business anywhere. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/
