My machine is not working. The needle thread is getting caught in the race (the part below the needle plate) and then is breaking. It makes a horrible noise when this happens and then I get a giant tangle.
In case you think this is because I cleaned it, it isn’t. I’ve sewn 6 masks today and was on the seventh one when this happened.?
I’ve opened up the works again and cleaned it (per the troubleshooting manual), inserted the needle, replaced the needle, replace the bobbin, and it is still happening. I also reduced the needle thread tension. Nothing is helping.
When I try to pull up the bobbin thread, the needle thread is getting caught in there. I can’t see anything out of whack but what do I know?
it is a Janome.? -- Jaya

Oh and it makes a clunking noise when this happens. I’ve only run it for an inch or so after each attempt at fixing. It starts off ok, then clunks and I stop and there is a tangle of thread under the machine.?
Somehow the needle thread is getting caught so the first few sts are OK and then it all gets tangles up.

With help from Ravelry I changed out the top thread, and reinserted the needle (a new one) and retreaded the whole machine and it is working now

So far I’ve had none of that but my last machine used to do it all the time. This one struggles over the small bits that has 6 or so layers. And remember, my outer layer is a bit heavier than usual although I am balancing that by using thinner material for the pocket.?
I seem to remember some sort of stick that I used to use to make it easier for thicker parts to glide over the feed dogs. I should go see what that was.

Jaya,? Glad you figured it out. ?My advice would have been to:
?1) rethread both top and bobbin then try it.? 2) change needle. ?(If the needle gets bent even slightly, it causes horrible alignment issues. Crunch crunch) Make sure the flat side is going into the machine in the right direction. Then try it.? 3) wind a new bobbin. ?Sometimes the bobbin thread can get really messed up when the machine jams. Thread gets pulled down into lower thread layers, etc.? 4)clean the bobbin area looking for caught threads. Clean around feed dogs, oil bobbin case (if your machine requires it). Then try it.? 5) still no luck? ?Take a break. ?Get a snack. ?Watch TV for a bit. ? 6) Deep breath and try again. ?If still nothing works, go begging for help on the internet!!! ? ?. Watch YouTube videos, read chat groups, etc. ?when you finally get it, celebrate!!!
FYI, if you’ve been sewing along fine, tension is rarely the problem. ?Once in a while, the thread can jump out of the correct threading or the tension discs, but once your tension settings are good, they typically don’t ?change on their own. ? Maybe this will help someone else who might run into trouble. ? Connie

I think Connie’s Troubleshooting Directions are exactly correct. Step 5 is crucial – walk the heck away when you’re that frustrated, before you find a way to make it worse.
I confidently expect that when all this is behind us, I will be sewing better than I have in ages; my machine and I will be good friends, ?and I will finally complete the project or two that have been hanging around and laughing at me.
