Singer Touch N Sew needle threader part 3
I have two replacement needle threader parts for the Singer Touch N Sew that I owned a long time ago. I found them when I was reorganizing my sewing things. Does anyone want them before I toss them? Also, still looking for someone who will be a backup admin. Someone I know on another forum passed away suddenly so this seems more urgent tot me now. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Backup admins 4
Yes, the more the merrier. Life happens. My father could fall ill. I could fall ill. I might need/want/have to relocate. In such cases, if someone needs something - like a change of email address. it is good to have someone else be able to do it. The main thing is to login into groups.io and go to the Admin section on the left nav bar. There you can invite members - this is where you would invite someone's new email address. Once they have accepted, you can go to the Members list and check and remove the old email address. This was urgent in Lise's case but it could also be urgent if someone's email is hacked. I have made jacqui, erica and diane moderators. They have all the moderator privileges - most of which are irrelevant to us. But they will see emails if someone changes their address (new member added, member removed). Other than that, there really is no other work. And.I expect to be able to do this for a long time but it is the same reason I have written down my password to my devices and also the master password to my password manager and made DH write down his. I show the kids where the stuff is every time they come. I should probably write it down and put it in some other place too but they need to be protected so I won't email or text it to them. I have to figure out some other safe way to do it. Thank you -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Allavsoft Downloads Help! 9
I've gotten the playlist loaded and downloaded a class, but it didn't load to to external HD on Drive E. It was saved somewhere in drive C on the laptop. Can anyone help me with what the problem may be? I'll attach photos. Tech savvy help needed. I've emailed Allavsoft, but it's 1AM there, so there won't be much help for awhile. Mary

Link from Allavsoft. You still have to buy a one month sub for $20. Since I had already bought it, I couldn't test to see if it would work on the free trial. Allavsoft Fail 2
Yesterday, I attempted to download one course, first to the external drive and then to the Allavsoft folder on drive C. In each case the bits and pieces of classes were downloaded: maybe the first full lesson and then parts and bits of some of the rest, maybe a random photograph of a project (wasn't expecting that), I never downloaded an entire course. While I may have straightened out the settings, I now think that the internet connection in Southport is unstable enough to caused interruptions in service that the software can't handle. This morning, when I made the same attempt, the software show it's downloading, but it clearly isn't doing it. 25 minutes after beginning the download, it is still showing 0% progress. I don't think it's the software, although I could uninstall and reinstall, just to be sure. I think it's Southport's connectivity. I think I'm out of luck here, at least for awhile. A little frustrated, but I don't think there's much I can do at this point. Mary.

New Ravelry look 23
So I have to ask… what do you think about the new look for Ravelry? I have to say that I’m really surprised by the choice to completely rebrand away from colors and logo, but more than that, I’m shocked by how clunky the interface now looks. It might function better, I’m not sure, but it’s causing me so much trouble with my eyes and headache that I’m not entirely certain I’ll ever find out. I did post in the feedback thread, but at the moment I’m not sure how well I’ll be able to keep up in the groups I moderate in, much less with other groups that I was active in or things I was following or doing on Ravelry. Pretty sad about this today. Melisande

Those Bums!
Was busy (thanks to all the special people who've helped me) downloading classes from Bluprint/Craftsy and as I was setting up another download, I got a big warning that the site has let their security certification expire. I suppose I just need to go ahead and keep downloading? They are complete and utter bums. Mary.

Bluprint/Craftsy 2
I just got charged for a new year of subscription service. Sigh. Auto pmts aren’t handy in a case like this. I can’t believe they haven’t turned off their Auto billing system. In the process of canceling the subscription, I asked the robo help bot about my classes just to see what it would say...... Connie

Need help calculating how much to spin 5
Many of you do more stranded projects than I do so maybe you have some advice. I am trying to calculate how many yards of two colors I need to spin for a sweater. I've done sample skeins, swatched, measured pre- and post-wash gauges. So far so good. The motifs are from EZ's Shaded Aspen Leaf sweater from Knitting Workshop. I am only using the motifs. The shape of the sweater isn't attractive to me. There is a gray MC and a cream CC. Per Sweater Wizard, I need 1125 yds for the entire sweater at that gauge. It is 5 spi and slightly under 5 rpi but I've calculated at 5 spi and 5 rpi. Now, assuming there I need 20% less CC due to the bands and picking up and possibly having some. plain areas where I am shaping. Do I need 1125 yds in total and how do I divide 500 yds of CC and 625 yds of MC is a 80/100 split Or do I need 1125 yds of MC and 900 yds of CC? - This just seems wrong to me but I don't know. There aren't too many projects on Ravelry that have been completed and have yarn quantities listed for this pattern. But the 80/100 split looks about right - that project used 5 skeins of the MC and 4 of the CC in a DK weight yarn which is what I'm getting. Another project has double the amount of yarn but she's made a tunic. She also doesn't split out the quantity between the colors. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/shaded-aspen-leaf-sweater-wg13-so23 - pattern I looked up Janine's book but since she is talking about FI with multiple colors, she is giving different options for calculating yardage of each color so it is more work than it is worth for a single color. In my swatch, which had garter st borders in the MC only, I used 1/3 the CC but I think that is too low for an all-over stranded pattern. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Best Fabrics for Summer Masks? 21
Summer is here, and my current mask stock is getting stuffy. I found this YouTube video that reviews testing done on various fabrics while I searched for options for lighter weight masks. This woman has concluded that 90% poly and 10% lycra stretch chiffon is a viable alternative. I'm not sure what I think. 67% effectiveness with one layer, 83% with two layers. Here's the video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS5LAUdLRwA Mary

Masks (again) 14
Ezra’s school has put out a detailed plan for bringing students back to campus in September (for which I am exceedingly grateful for a number of reasons). Baird’s school hasn’t given us details yet (they don’t have the same options to put students in hotels due to location, but I sure hope they prioritize seniors at school because I don’t think he’s going to be able to write his comps effectively otherwise), but they have said that they’re working on a plan to get most students back on campus. New Jersey is intending that students go back to school in the fall too. All of which mean that I’m going to need to make more masks. I’m not as concerned about Arielle because I have more ability to launder of otherwise take care of things quickly for her (bigger concern is that we still haven’t found one that really fits well enough to wear for an extended period of time, but I have some ideas), but I want to make sure I send the boys with enough masks (though Mac has explicitly said that they’ll make them available). How many masks do you think I should plan to send with each kid? Taking opinions about that, and reasons for opinions are good too. Slightly related, I saw a write-up of a paper that was recently published about the most effective mask materials. I haven’t read the paper and don’t know if they looked at anything like a Filti layer, but the researchers concluded that 2 layers of quilting cotton did the best job of protecting other people (nothing included in the article I read about whether they looked at how well the mask protected the “wearer” dummy). Woohoo!! 3
Craftsy is back!!! They are changing the name back! I hated the name Bluprint. I disliked it so much that I sent a customer service emIl saying so. It reminds me of architecture, not crafting. Can’t understand why a company that had built an idenity would change it. They were the first in the game. They owned it!! So glad they listened to me. If only they’d have asked my advice beforehand! ? Connie

Not masks! 39
Yesterday I finally opened up the plastic bin where I'd tucked away most of my handknits in the aftermath of the February 2019 flood. I've had only those few (well, 8-10) things that I actually wear and use frequently accessible since then. I put them away in the glass-fronted china cabinet where I store most of my knits - they almost all fit there on four shelves, so it's not like I have *that* many. I was looking forward to doing this - but the feeling I got was, not enjoyment at seeing and handling things again, but "lord, I have way too many shawls, hats, and sweaters." And it bummed me out. Anybody else been there? I'm feeling really saddled with too many finished items, as well as WAY too much nice yarn. Saddest of all, it makes me realize that continuing to knit a lot is kind of ridiculous. Shawls? I've got 20+. Sweaters? Don't really need any. Socks are ok, they wear out fast. Yes, I do enjoy knitting for other people (socks, hats, the occasional sweater) but there are only so many people in my life who really appreciate those gifts. Not sure there's an answer for this psychic dilemma, but thanks for listening :-) --Therese Thérèse Shere Freelance indexing & digital information design http://www.shere-indexing.com

PSA for those with bad eyes 3
I have been struggling for quite a few years now with fine work. As my presbyopia has become worse, the combination of that + my lifelong myopia and astigmatism have resulted in a very narrow band of clear vision for close work. It was actually easier for me to remove my glasses and do anything fine like hemstitching or hand sewing. But this had the problem that if I needed to look up and do anything - like find a pin I dropped.or the thread to get a new length - I had to first find my glasses! I’ve discussed a lot of things with the eye doctor over the years. Then, Janet Pray, in one of her Craftsy videos recommended an Optivisor. It seemed awfully bulky for something I’d use once in a while. But the same company (so good optical lenses) makes this magnifier that fits over one’s glasses. I bought the lowest magnification and have been using it. I just ordered the highest magnification. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EM74RG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It doesn’t fit on my regular glasses because the lenses are too thick to accommodate their clip. But my computer distance glasses are perfect. Single focal length the whole lens is usable, and the magnifiers just flip out of the way and are very adjustable to the angle you need so you are looking through them. I can see very well to hemstitch normal threads but I’m not sure that it will work for much finer threads. Hence the higher magnifier. Plus it stays put unlike the ones around one’s next which move and flip. It is right in your line of sight. I am so thrilled! -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Upholstery fabric 11
I need to make a couple of small covers to cover the sofa cushions where they shrank on washing. I have a 100 or 110 needle and plan to use a walking foot - which I got after all my placemat hemming in Jan. I assume I increase the stitch size? I have some strong Coats thread that I used to sew the casing on the carpet that I hung on the wall. I’m planning to use that. It is thicker than regular sewing machine thread. Any other tips?-- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Monger Books 10
For the mystery lovers: I've started a book, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (such an uplifting title!). It won the Nobel in Literature and so far, I'm loving it. Set in Poland and written by Olga Tokarczuk. I'm enjoying the different locale, the different season (winter) and fresh characters who are so eccentric and interesting. An excellent escape. Finished Mexican Gothic. Was so disappointed. It came out of the gate with a bang, like a DuMaurier thriller and devolved into a not so great knock off of a Stephen King horror fantasy. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief long enough to make it work for me. Mary.

lawn mowing 5
So, it’s probably being recorded as the hottest day so far in 2020. Our lawn guy (who is close to our age) showed up at 11 this morning. Okay, nothing out of the ordinary. Depending on weather we get mowed Fri, Sat, Sun, most weeks. He started weed whacking. And he whacked everything to within an inch of its life, including the 2 bank/slope areas that he usually mows. Then he moved next door (he does hers also, usually on the same schedule). Finally, he ran the mower on both lawns. Hottest. Day. This Year. He just left (2:45). Mark and I figure that his wife (who usually splits the jobs with him) refused to go out in this heat. (Like we care. If he gets to it eventually and we don’t have to do it ourselves. . .) So, to spite her, and nearly kill himself. I have no words. Was going to check with the lawyer son, but felt he’d probably just say “drag the body into the neighbor’s yard and call 911.” Ann in PA
