Think about whether staining the cabinets something like a deeper?shade of mahogany or walnut might?be?worth doing if you want to keep the look of the wood. Mostly, congratulations! Nilda Hi Connie no decorating guru here but, if possible, I’d get rid of the fan & lights. Looks a bit old fashioned! Lots of down lights in the ceiling would work I think. Hi Regan
Very helpful! The appliances are old except for the microwave. ?I will probably replace with brushed nickel stainless so definitely not wanting to decorate to the black. ?I’ve decided to ignore it. ???

The ceiling fans already have burial plots. ?I want something interesting/unusual ?over the island and the eat-in kitchen area.?
I’ve already requested under cabinet lights. ?We put them in here at our current house when we gutted the kitchen. ?I love them.?
Yes, the floor tile is staying but we’re having the grout redone. Do not like the checkerboard look with the black lines AT ALL.?

To me one big thing is what do you want to do with the kitchen long term and how can you move towards that goal? For example, how old are those appliances? If they’re going to need replacing in the next couple years, would you choose a different color like stainless or white? If they’re going to need replacing and you lock yourself into a design scheme based on black appliances, you might have regrets.?
Color-wise, since you’re not going to be replacing the floor, you probably want to lean into that a bit. Here’s a kitchen with honey oak cabinets where the island and walls are painted a similar color as your floor. They’ve lightened it up with white paint for the doors, trim & ceiling, a stainless sink, and nickel for the pulls & faucet, plus that beautiful oatmeal quartz for the counters. Cool colors for accents, like blue, also help balance out all that honey oak. Swapping out the sink for stainless or white enamel wouldn’t be hugely expensive and you could have it done when you replace the counters (and use the opportunity to get an under-mount sink with a large single bowl—but maybe it’s just me that hates double bowl sinks which are too small to soak a pan and over-mount sinks that are grunge traps.)?
One issue is simply how much honey oak there is because you have so many cabinets. Can any of them be removed or swapped out for something else? You could take out the cabinets over the cooktop and replace with a big stainless vent hood. Or swap out some of the doors for glass fronts. Ditch the appliance garage when you have the countertops replaced. Take out the uppers on either side of window and put in some open shelving to show off some white dishes, glassware or some pretty serving pieces that you have, plus a plant or two.
Finally, I agree with whoever suggested ditching the light fixture. It’s too big, dated and in an awkward location. If the budget will allow, I’d install can lights in the ceiling and maybe some pendants over the island, but you could also just keep it open. Under cabinet lighting is also a nice luxury.
Have fun!

Yes, it is much harder in covid times. I had to get a new hair stylist right after the pandemic started because my long-time stylist moved away to be closer to her children in No VA. I asked a friend and started going to her stylist but spacing it out more so I'm not exposing myself so often. Then the new stylist told me that she doesn't plan on getting vaccinated so I started looking for a new one. I used a Whatsapp group that we set up at the start of the pandemic among our Indian friends but I only got one lead and it was a salon, which I was trying to avoid due to interaction with others. My old stylist and the one I've been using both cut in their houses so there aren't other people around. Anyway I posted on a forum I've been on for a while - a spin-off from the old WeightWatchers boards. And someone relatively local has given me her stylist's name. The woman rents a suite in a local salon so there is no one else there and she's fully vaccinated.?
I wear my mask when my hair is being washed and cut - clamping it to my nose but the stylist's mask is always slipping so I'm not happy with going there if she's unvaccinated. My dad is now 94 and I don't want him in the hospital with COVID-19. We've been very careful since 2020. I spend 30-45 mins with her and so it is not a short interaction.
So asking around via email or text or even phone calls, I guess, works in getting recommendations.

Thanks! I struggle with ‘asking around’ because of how insular our covid-world is. Will try to think more out of the box on people to ask. ?? jacqueline? On Jan 11, 2022, at 9:10 AM, Jaya Srikrishnan <ermabom@...> wrote:

Hey guys!
Happy New year to one and all.? We’ve been so busy trying to get stuff done at the new house that I’ve not had time to even think.?
Anybody here good at decorating?? I have a huge kitchen full of honey oak cabinets that are in excellent condition and too costly to replace.? It needs help to look updated.?
We are getting new counter tops for sure, but I can’t decide what color to paint the walls that will help minimize all that honey color.? I’m not thrilled with the black appliances, but they’re staying for now.? Too much else to pay for—carpet, paint, etc.?
Here’s the pics from the real estate listing.? It’s currently lavender and plum at the bottom below the chair rail.? Does nothing for the room. The border with grapes is already outta there!
The tile is in good shape but hate the black grout lines so we are having the grout redone.?
This is the countertop color I’m thinking of.
And ideas are greatly appreciated!

Connie - what a great space! That's the size of an NYC apartment. FWIW - decide on whether you like super modern, country, outdoor natural, etc style to start. Then you can look at drawer pulls to match that style. Look at mags online that you like, whether it's Architectural Digest, Veranda, Better Homes, whatever. Even the Ikea catalog, or Restoration Hardware. They all have websites with ideas. Houzz and AT as Jaya mentioned are also good for inspiration. Spotlights, downlights will all modernize the space. Color theory: if you want to minimize the yellow-orange of the cabinets, stay away from purple and blue shades for the walls. Think about whether staining the cabinets something like a deeper?shade of mahogany or walnut might?be?worth doing if you want to keep the look of the wood. Or whitewashing them or staining a light grey if you want to go lighter. Think about whether something like subway tile for the walls might be good, even if it's down the line. I think?on AT they also show these stickon?wallpaper options people use for backsplashes that are reasonable and really change the look of a space. Also, plants. They'll liven up the space too.? Mostly, congratulations! Nilda
