Kitchen Decor help?

Hey guys!
Happy New year to one and all. We’ve been so busy trying to get stuff done at the new house that I’ve not had time to even think.

Anybody here good at decorating? I have a huge kitchen full of honey oak cabinets that are in excellent condition and too costly to replace. It needs help to look updated.

We are getting new counter tops for sure, but I can’t decide what color to paint the walls that will help minimize all that honey color. I’m not thrilled with the black appliances, but they’re staying for now. Too much else to pay for—carpet, paint, etc.

Here’s the pics from the real estate listing. It’s currently lavender and plum at the bottom below the chair rail. Does nothing for the room. The border with grapes is already outta there!

The tile is in good shape but hate the black grout lines so we are having the grout redone.

This is the countertop color I’m thinking of.

And ideas are greatly appreciated!
Connie

Connie,
Have you looked through Houzz? The other place you might check is a site called Apartment Therapy which?has a lot of makeovers of rental or small kitchens where they often paint the cabinets instead of replacing them.

Lastly, we hired a decorator to just give us advice. It was about an hour of her time so it was not very expensive. We've done it twice. In both cases she gave us excellent advice about dealing with a problem in the room as well as picking out colors for us to match our existing cabinets. She picked out wall and countertop colors. In the family room she told us how to put in a fireplace we wanted that I had been struggling with. In the master bath she told us how to disguise the door leading to the attic. For the bath, she charged us for 30 mins and for the family room where she did more like picking out the colors, she charged us for an hour.

Hi Connie,

What a great space (from the land of small urban houses ?). I agree with Jaya’s suggestion as it’s hard to choose paint online.

A few thoughts. If you’re keeping the black appliances (which will look good with the counter) and the sink is black, perhaps updating the tap and cabinet handles in black will help unify the look. The handles are pretty dated and it’ll make it look more contemporary. Also, have you considered having the cabinets refaced? I’m looking into this for my kitchen - they take the doors and paint them and then come in and do all the boxed and trim. It’s apparently an economical solution and then you could coordinate the cabinet colour with the walls etc.

Boy. I thought I had a lot of honey oak in my kitchen! Our original hardware when we installed was small ceramic knobs with chamomile flowers. Several years in, we replaced the sink hardware and the knobs with brushed steel. I know new appliances aren't currently in the works, but back in my designer days (fresh out of college, lots of new construction), we always recommended white appliances (this was the days of avocado and harvest gold). White is timeless. (Tip for when you are ready to replace. Feel free to ignore).

Our walls (with similar cabinets) are a yellow-y cream color. They need repainting and I will probably go with something similar because we aren't in a position to replace countertops (flooring will have to come first). It's amazing what 20+ years can do to finishes.

I'll probably think of more as soon as I hit send!

Jacqui
My physical therapist mentioned that he had hired a decorator when I was having treatments. So I asked him who he had hired and he gave me her name. She does mostly commercial properties, very few homes. But she was willing to both give us ideas via consultation and do the entire thing - including replacing all our furniture and re-doing the kitchen. Which we didn't want to do so we just had her give us ideas. We then went back to her a year or two later for the master bath when we remodeled that. She didn't give us any ideas on color and stuff there, just discussed layout with us and gave us the idea about hiding the door.?

I think you have to ask around. My son and DIL have just hired a decorator to help them with their master bath and I think they asked around for recommendations. You could also check Yelp I guess.?

Jacqui, furniture stores sometimes have a designer/decorator on staff (or might have a referral list). That was my first career out of college back in the 70s. Sometimes it's fee-based, sometimes it's value added with purchase.

I worked with builders of vacation homes on placement of things like outlets and baseboard heat units, paneling color, and with clients on furniture selection and placement. The last couple years before Brendan was born, I specialized in high end window treatments. All based in a furniture store in the Poconos. I was salaried, so no incentive to up sell.

Hi Connie
no decorating guru here but, if possible, I’d get rid of the fan & lights. Looks a bit old fashioned! Lots of down lights in the ceiling would work I think.
What a huge kitchen, could fit 3 of mine in there!?

Beryl

Connie - what a great space! That's the size of an NYC apartment. FWIW - decide on whether you like super modern, country, outdoor natural, etc style to start. Then you can look at drawer pulls to match that style. Look at mags online that you like, whether it's Architectural Digest, Veranda, Better Homes, whatever. Even the Ikea catalog, or Restoration Hardware. They all have websites with ideas. Houzz and AT as Jaya mentioned are also good for inspiration. Spotlights, downlights will all modernize the space. Color theory: if you want to minimize the yellow-orange of the cabinets, stay away from purple and blue shades for the walls. Think about whether staining the cabinets something like a deeper?shade of mahogany or walnut might?be?worth doing if you want to keep the look of the wood. Or whitewashing them or staining a light grey if you want to go lighter. Think about whether something like subway tile for the walls might be good, even if it's down the line. I think?on AT they also show these stickon?wallpaper options people use for backsplashes that are reasonable and really change the look of a space. Also, plants. They'll liven up the space too.?
Mostly, congratulations!
Nilda

You could also check Yelp I guess.?

how did you go about finding a decorator? I would desperately love to hire someone to come in and tell me where our things should go!

Happy New year to one and all.? We’ve been so busy trying to get stuff done at the new house that I’ve not had time to even think.?

Anybody here good at decorating?? I have a huge kitchen full of honey oak cabinets that are in excellent condition and too costly to replace.? It needs help to look updated.?

We are getting new counter tops for sure, but I can’t decide what color to paint the walls that will help minimize all that honey color.? I’m not thrilled with the black appliances, but they’re staying for now.? Too much else to pay for—carpet, paint, etc.?

Here’s the pics from the real estate listing.? It’s currently lavender and plum at the bottom below the chair rail.? Does nothing for the room. The border with grapes is already outta there!

The tile is in good shape but hate the black grout lines so we are having the grout redone.?

This is the countertop color I’m thinking of.

And ideas are greatly appreciated!

Yes, it is much harder in covid times. I had to get a new hair stylist right after the pandemic started because my long-time stylist moved away to be closer to her children in No VA. I asked a friend and started going to her stylist but spacing it out more so I'm not exposing myself so often. Then the new stylist told me that she doesn't plan on getting vaccinated so I started looking for a new one. I used a Whatsapp group that we set up at the start of the pandemic among our Indian friends but I only got one lead and it was a salon, which I was trying to avoid due to interaction with others. My old stylist and the one I've been using both cut in their houses so there aren't other people around. Anyway I posted on a forum I've been on for a while - a spin-off from the old WeightWatchers boards. And someone relatively local has given me her stylist's name. The woman rents a suite in a local salon so there is no one else there and she's fully vaccinated.?

I wear my mask when my hair is being washed and cut - clamping it to my nose but the stylist's mask is always slipping so I'm not happy with going there if she's unvaccinated. My dad is now 94 and I don't want him in the hospital with COVID-19. We've been very careful since 2020. I spend 30-45 mins with her and so it is not a short interaction.

So asking around via email or text or even phone calls, I guess, works in getting recommendations.
