Door Opener Works!
3
Hello everyone! We are happy to report that we now have a working remote for the garage door. It can be accessed in the lock box with the combination lock on the right side near the key pad. The combination to the box is 34-12-30. The remote should remind in the box at all times. Just push it to open the door and then lock the box up again. In order to close the door on your way out, you may use the button that is on the side of the door near the sign in desk. It is just slightly above the level of the desk and right along the edge of the opening. (The night side of opening when looking out of the boathouse.) The opener is wrapped in plastic to ensure it does not sustain any water damage in the event that rain gets in the lock box. Please let me know if you have any issues with opening g the door now or if you have any questions. Happy Rowing! Yankee Rowing -- Reminder: Club Boat Reservations
3
Yankee Rowers, Recently we've had some mix-ups regarding club boat reservations. Just a reminder: If you plan to use a club boat during one of the three early morning slots (the slot times change over time with the change in the sunrise; right now, the last slot starts at 9:30 a.m.), before rowing you need to reserve the boat on the Yankee Rowing online reservation sheet at one of the two links below. (Boats used after the listed morning time slots do not need to be reserved.) Please read and follow the reservation sheet instructions, and please make sure that you row in the boat that you've reserved (occasionally people who reserve one of the club boats--usually one of the four small Peinert boats--forget which boat they've reserved and take out another similar boat which someone else has reserved). Here are the reservation sheet links: https://tinyurl.com/yrcserve or https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xMuu9iZtBNKHAEC6Deg_xxiqU3YFr3zO06xX69SS5rg/edit?pli=1&gid=1131034294#gid=1131034294 Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Row for the River event invitation for Yankee Rowers!
Hello YCR Members, I am sending along Northampton Community Rowing's invitiation to join their fun Row for the River on Sept 15th. Please see the detailed description of the event on the attached flier. NCR is inviting folks to row with them in their big boats, quads, doubles or in our own singles. They are asking for a donation of $100 to participate as it is a fundraiser for NCR and CRC as they aim to raise $20,000. But of course, folks could donate and not participate. After the row, YCR members are also invited to join in a celebration and boat dedication for some of NRC’s new singles at NCR. Please feel free to reach out to the President of NCR Board and fellow YCR Member, Sally Linowski, if you have any questions. Also, please join in on wishing for good weather!!! Yankee Rowing: College Crews & HampCrew Returning Soon
Yankee Rowers, The college crews and HampCrew will be returning to the river soon (in the next week or two). At times, things are likely to get busy on or around the docks at the Sports-man's Marina, which we share with the Amherst College and Smith College crews, and the U/Mass women's crew. Please be considerate, patient, and flexible when using the docks. And please be extra careful on the water, keeping an eye out for rowing shells and launches (and buoys) near and behind you. Also, please stay on the appropriate side of the river: going upstream, stay toward the Hadley side of the river; and going down-stream, stay toward the Northampton/Hatfield side of the river. Here are the fall practice schedules for the various local crews: Amherst College: Mon - Fri at 5:30 - 7:30 PM; and Sat at 8:30 - 11:00 AM Smith College: With the full team: Mon - Thurs at 4:30 - 6:40 PM, and some Fridays at 6:00 - 8:00 AM, and Sat at 7:00 - 10:00 AM. And a few small boat sessions with 4-8 athletes in the morning: Mon - Thurs at 7:30 - 8:30 AM. U/Mass Women: Mon - Fri at 6:45 - 9: 00 AM, launching around 7:00 - 7:15 AM and landing around 8:45 AM; and Sat launching around 7:15 - 7:30 AM and landing around 9:30 AM. U/Mass Men (launching from the dock on the Northampton side of the river between the two bridges): Next week, starting Tues, 7/27, they will do double sessions on Tues - Sat at 7:00 - 9:00 AM and at around 1:00 - 4:00 PM. After next week, they will resume normal practice times on Mon - Fri at 6:00 - 9:00 AM; and Sat at 7:00 - 10:00 AM. Northampton Community Rowing/HampCrew (launching from their dock upstream, just before the turn in the river at the Honeypot): Mon - Sat at 5:30 - 7:30 AM; and Mon - Fri at 4:15 - 6:30 PM. Thanks very much to the local coaches and crews for providing information regarding their practice times. Best, Ernie

Club Fluid Design repair for those who use the Mid Weight Flulid
4
To those who row the Fluid Design: The center V strip below the foot-stretcher, into which the foot-stretcher locks down, was peened over, rounded over, so the whole ensemble would slip. I think the problem is fixed. I replaced the old nylon V strip, and replaced the small wing nut and bolt with which you locked down the assembly. 1 Keep the gunnel bolts loose enough to position the stretcher to where it fits you. 2 Then Tighten the lower Cylindrical Nut, and Sliding Track Bolt FIRST. 3 After the lowest bolt is tight, then you can firm up the Gunnel attachments. By replacing the small wing nut with a tall Cylindrical nut, it will be easy to tighten now. Let me know if you have any problems. Too all who don't use the Fluid, this will not make any sense. Craig

2
Just a reminder: Jonathan will be leading us in a self-rescue demonstration and practice session this coming Saturday, August 17, at 7:30 a.m. at the marina dock. Bring a towel. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. It's important to know how to self-rescue in case you fall into the river. Even if you've done a self-rescue drill previously, it's good to do it again now and then. (We used to do this regularly, at least once or twice a season. But we haven't done it in a while. We're hoping to return to doing it on a regular basis.) Best, Ernie

New Friend / New member

Hi all, Spencer is picking up rowing after college 8s at Skidmore and is loving it. His wife Christine gave him some coaching for his birthday, and now all we have to wait for it the water to go down. We have had our introductory sessions and will probably take a fun row or two together as well. Please welcome Spencer! Cheers, J

Yankee Rowing -- Using Club Oars
2
If you use Yankee Rowing Club oars, please don't change/adjust the settings on the oars (for the handles, collars, or oar lengths). As the oar charts in the boathouse note, each pair of club oars has been set to specific measurements--for reasons of safety and so people can use the same oars with the same settings regularly. If you are having problems with the club oars or need advice regarding oars, please contact Craig at zzooey@.... Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

hot water
2
Recently the gas supply for the hot water heater was turned off. I turned it on, and all is ok, but left it turned off. Gary reports that they were doing some repairs next door and it was a precaution. So all is good to go with water heater. I will turn back on when I am next there, or anyone can. Turn the blue valve stem to align vertically with the pipe. No pilot lights , just on off. Small stuff, but all good. Jonathan

Jonathan will be leading us in a self-rescue demonstration and practice session on Saturday, August 17, at 7:30 a.m. at the marina dock. Bring a towel. (In case of bad weather/water/wind, Sunday, August 18 at 7:30 a.m. will be the back-up date.) Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. It's important to know how to self-rescue in case you fall into the river. Even if you've done a self-rescue drill previously, it's good to do it again now and then. We used to do this regularly, at least once or twice a season. But we haven't done it in a while. We're hoping to return to doing it on a regular basis. We look forward to seeing you. Best, Ernie

Paris Olympics
Hey Yankee Rowers, I am watching the Olympic opening ceremony now and am so happy that our love of water and the power of moving through water is being celebrated in Paris at the Olympics. Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet. It transcends rowing. Maybe we need to move to France… -anne

Self Rescue Session
6
Hello Fellow Rowers, Would anyone be interested in learning how to self-rescue? Now would be the time, warm days, warm water. I know I have wanted to learn that to feel more comfortable when I’m out there by myself. If anyone else is interested maybe it could be a group exercise. Otherwise, if someone could coach me individually I would appreciate that. If anyone else is interested I’d be happy to organize a day and time. Thanks! River Flow - Alert
3
Hi Everyone, I trust you all check the water flow before each row, but just wanted to flag for everyone that the water flow is quite high due to excessive rain north of us. The flow is expected to be high for now and not conducive to sculling in a single. Thanks for checking in advance of each row and knowing that club boats should not be used unless the flow is 20 KCFS or lower. Yankee Rowing Boathouse Updates & Reminders
There is now a magnetic door catch on the inside of the "men's" bathroom door so that the door can stay open. After you use the bathroom, please remember to open the door all of the way so that the magnet catches and the bathroom gets aired out and dried out. The spray handle on the boathouse hose broke this morning and will be replaced with a new handle tomorrow/Friday morning. Please be careful using the new handle. Please try to avoid dropping it on the ground or on the boathouse ramp. Please don't leave club towels outside on the slings, grass, or ramp--they get or stay wet out there. Please hang them up on the clothesline inside the boathouse. Thanks very much.
