The season is over, alas // effective 11/14
Effective Monday, Nov. 14, the club rowing season is closed. This means that club boats may not be rowed. Those of you with private boats are welcome to row. But please be careful. The water temperature has been 48F or lower recently, and cold weather is in the forecast. We want to see you all hale and hearty when spring springs! Thank you all for running a remarkably collaborative and cooperative club. I know you all cherish our little boutique club, and you make it work, every day. Thank you. Bob

Double is Now Re Rigged.... BUT...!
3
Yankee Rowing Members who row the Fluid Design Double: I repaired the crack at the bow of the Splashguard. You will find silver ink around the area, keep an eye on it and let me know if you see Any cracking or damage developing further. All the wheels on Both seats were bad. Since I don't row the double, I never would have known except a member who helped me put it in the sling today and happened to check the slides. The wheels are a composite material which fit tightly onto a bearing inside. Those wheels and bearing were separated, meaning that years of wear had them wobbling back and forth on the track. One slide had developed a razor sharp edge towards it's outside. I rounded that over with emory cloth so it is safe now. It's hard to imagine someone didn't notice this before but to reiterate: If you see anything wrong, or feel anything out of the ordinary, please let me know ASAP. In addition, please keep to our singles routine even with the double. Wash it, dry it, and WIPE out the Tracks with a small rag, and check the running gear to make sure nothing is jamming or out of alignment. You won't have to worry about the cover for the rest of the season. The zipper head is broken and we are having it repaired. So for now, you don't have to worry about the cover. Please use some kind of cloth between the hull and the cam levers on the yellow straps, so you don't scratch the hull when strapping it down. One last item. We have a "no fault" policy at YRC which has worked very well. If you break something, or you see that something needs fixing, let me or Ernie, Bob Sproul, or someone on the BOD know so that it can be fixed promptly. Most of our equipment is in pretty decent shape, which saves us from having to replace boats frequently. This means we can spend on money on boats and oars, and not repairs. Yours, Craig Schiff

Update on Full Moon Row--long email
6
Hi, everyone, So far it looks like we have 7 people who responded YES to the full moon row and 3 who responded MAYBE. Yay! Jenn has written to me with very important recommendations from her experience doing the full moon row. They are so sound that I'm suggesting we do exactly what she recommends: Up river will take longer to get to the viewing point which is around Boy Scout Island. Which also means it takes longer to get back, and we would definitely be getting back in total darkness, which is a concern, especially with more debris in the water from the rain lately. The first time I did this, we went down river and, while we didn¡¯t have to travel far, we had a nice view of the moon coming up over the Holyoke range, and we didn¡¯t have to come back in total darkness. As our goal is more to have an enjoyable time on the water rather than a work out per se, I think we should go the conservative route and go down River. Even though the moon is scheduled to rise at 6:27 PM, it takes a good 15 to 20 minutes past that for the moon to actually rise above the Holyoke range. So really, if we launch around 615, that should be good. So, to summarize what the plan currently is for Sunday: 1. We will launch at 6:15. Please arrive with more than enough time to get you and your boat to the dock to launch. We will travel as a pack so it would be good not to need to wait for anyone who might be really late. 2. We will row downstream to view the full moon over the Holyoke Range. Float for a spell to take it all in. 3. Then we return--hearts full of glorious moonshine(!)...that is, light from the moon...and return safely to our dock. I've heard from a few people who didn't respond to the email but who MIGHT be able to join us. Please just let me know--via the text number below--if you' find you're able to come. LIGHTS: Craig kindly has gotten 6 club lights in good working order for us to use. If everyone participates--including all the MAYBES--we are 10. I have my own bow and stern lights. Does anyone else have their own lights? WEATHER: Currently, there continues to be a nice forecast--sunny, around 55 degrees--with the wind dropping quickly from 7mph to 4mph. If that changes and becomes nasty, the row is off. I will email around mid-afternoon on Sunday confirming if the weather holds, and canceling if it turns bad. I'm beyond excited. I have wanted to do this for years, but it's only since moving to this wonderful area and joining all of you kind and generous scullers at Yankee that it has become possible. Fingers and toes crossed for good weather. Nancy 978-430-6467

YRC If you plan on rowing in the Moonlight, only one of the six lights fixed is now working. You might want to bring a small flashlight, batteries or whatever to light your boat. C

Full Moon Row
21
Hi, fellow scullers, There will be a full moon this weekend--the Hunter's Moon--and I'm writing to see if there's any interest in coming together for a full moon row on Sunday evening. At the moment the weather does not look too bad--55 degrees and 7-4 mph wind. The sky will be "partly cloudy/mostly sunny." Moon rise is 6:27pm so maybe we meet at the boathouse at 5pm to launch around 5:30-5:45. I have never done this before, so those times will probably be adjusted when I consult those who are experienced in full moon rowing. Just so you don't think I'm going rogue with this idea, I did consult the board and they suggested I reach out to the membership to see what kind of interest there is in doing this. And, of course, if the weather gets nasty the plan will have to be canceled. For now, I'm just interested in hearing from those who want to do this and can do this if it happens. with thanks, Nancy (Diessner)

Yankee Rowing Boathousekeeping Tips
2
Yankee Rowers, If you use one of the NK speed coaches, please return it to the black shelf in the back of the boathouse between the two bathrooms, and please plug it in so that it recharges. If you take a shower in the boathouse bathroom, please use one of the rugs on the floor by the shower and dry up any excess water on the bathroom floor. Water that doesn't get dried up ends up forming a puddle around the toilet. Also, after using one of the rugs, please hang it back up on the towel rack so that it dries out. Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Boats, Docks, buoys etc
Members: It looks like all the buoys have been pulled including the No Wake buoys in front of our docks. The motor boats are going away from the main docks, and might all be gone as of today. The finger docks and main outward dock will follow soon. There is only one large Red buoy North of us- in front of the small motor boats docked on the Hadley side of the river. Watch for the log which is still on the Elwell's Island side a bit north of this Red buoy. The white marker is gone from the log now. FYI The Green Mt Head race is this Sunday up in Vermont. In the boathouse, there are a few clothes left hanging up. J&L rowing shorts ( small ), two sleeveless Under-armour Shirts, one small Patagonia long sleeve. Pick them up if they are yours, please. The Club has Two GPS orange NKs. If you use one, try to remember to put it back on to charge. If you can't find one of the YRC NKs, it might still be attached to one of Peinert 25s. Yours, Craig

Care of the reservations spreadsheet
I maintain this, and it's a bit delicate. I try to update it so only the next 1-2 weeks of reservations show. But if I forget, you may not find the dates you want displayed. I'm happy to let the whole season show, but then you have to navigate more. IF YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY WITH THE SPREADSHEET, PLEASE SEND ME EMAIL (rfsproull@...) and I will fix it as soon as I can. PLEASE DO NOT FREELANCE TRYING TO REPAIR THE SPREADSHEET. Thanks Bob

Peinert 25s now have NK mounts.
2
YRC Members: I installed mounts for the GPS NKs on all the Peinert 25s. The YRC chargers and NKs are in the back. We have 2 of them; I believe they are orange. Others (private Nks ) may be charging in back also. Please use only the YRC club ones. If you have never used one ask for help. They provide very helpful data like: Strokes per minute, meters per stroke, 500 meter split times, distance and a lot more. Craig

Abandoned gear available
Yankee Rowers, There is a blue plastic box in the boathouse on the floor by the bench near the bathrooms. It has some abandoned gear in it (e.g., sunglasses, mirrors, water shoes, a bicycle pump, rowing togs, some shirts, several caps, etc.) Between now and this coming Friday, feel free to take anything in there that you can use. Best, Ernie

The YRC NK GPS units have moved
YRC Members: The club has two NK GPS units. They have been moved from the knee-wall in front, to the shelves on the back wall, between the bathrooms. This should be better than trying to grab them from under wet towels and a stack of boats. The two car-top racks ,which were on the floor in back, are now hung up on the wall behind the first stack of shells. They are the two on the lowest hooks. craig

YRC Boathousekeeping (Is this container yours?)
There is a blue plastic container in the boathouse located on top of the short wall between the two rooms of the boathouse. It's about 1' x 1' x 1.5' and has various kinds of gear in it--hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, rags, etc. (There are two other boxes alongside it on the wall, a cardboard box and another blue plastic box, that have club records in them.) Craig and I don't know who the container belongs to. We're trying to tidy things up a bit--if this is your container, please remove it from the boathouse. Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Caution: Split plank on the YRC Boathouse ramp
The lowermost plank on the ramp from the main boathouse door to the blacktop is split --towards the end of the plank, near the center of the ramp, along the blacktop. If you step on the plank there, it gives way a bit and you can catch your foot or twist your ankle. The plank needs to be replaced. In the meantime, please be careful and avoid stepping on that spot of the ramp. --Ernie

Young Parents Regatta
3
Many thanks to all the Yankee Rowers who helped out in a variety of ways at yesterday¡¯s Young Parents Regatta in Holyoke. It was a blast! This was the 22nd year that The Care Center has hosted this event and it continues to be a great way to celebrate the work of these young women novice rowers. A good time was had by all. ¨CAnne Teschner

Yankee Rowing: New roller for the boathouse door
3
From Craig: YRC Members: Thanks to the generosity of Barry Nigrosh we have a heavy-duty roller for our hose now. It is simple to coil up the hose with this device. There is a cam "brake" which has just enough tension when you pull out the hose, so it doesn't go running off the spoil wildly. When you coil up the hose with the handle, take the cam "brake" off so it can run free. The hand that is not cranking the handle can neatly guide the hose into an even pattern. Then lock the brake when you are finished. The "brake" is labeled. So, when pulling Out the hose- brake is ON. When Re-coiling the brake is OFF. So far, it seems as though you can bleed the hose either before or after coiling it back up with no difference. Thanks again to Barry. -- Craig
