The spray nozzle is broken 3
YRC members: Our good nozzle to the heavy-duty hose has a broken handle. I thought we had another in the boathouse; no such luck. Some "One" please volunteer to buy a decent nozzle and the club will reimburse you. You might want to write back to the Yankee Group so we know it has been taken care of, otherwise we might wind up with a few more nozzles than we need. In the meantime, I have an inexpensive one here and I'll bring it in late Monday. Incredibly, the rebuilt ramp is already back in place. Fastest turn around I've ever seen there. Yours, Craig

Yankee Rowing -- dock ramp is being repaired -- please use the other dock
The wooden ramp that goes down to our dock has been removed and is being repaired. Please use the dock downstream to launch your boat for now. Please be careful launching off the downstream end of that dock -- to avoid rowing into the motorboats in the boat slips just after the end of the dock. --Ernie

Filippi Elite Wing Rigger for sale HW 5
YRC members. If anyone is interested in a Filippi shell, get back to me. I have a lead on a really nice Wing Rigger, Filippi in the Elite category which would make a great private boat. No issues, rarely rowed, and close by in Western Mass. This is a good deal for someone. Craig

Moving the boats on the outside rack.. For the Early rowers. 3
To any Early Birds going out Wednesday: I'm going to rig the repaired white club Maas tomorrow , Wednesday if I can. If you are down there early, could you do me a favor and re-arrange three boats for me on the outside rack 1. The white repaired Maas can go on a pair of PVC slings over the grass. Use the yellow tie downs just for safety, around the slings. 2 The Little River which is on top of the Double Fluid can go down to the bottom rack where the YRC repaired Maas was. Use it's own tie downs. 3There is a Kaschper on the outside just above the RecRacer; it can be put where the Little River was: on the highest rack above the Fluid Design Double. Face it bow or stern to make it easiest for the Double and Anita's single Fluid. It should have it own tie downs too. Thanks if you can help out. Craig

Fw: Safely Storing Oars at Yankee Rowing Club
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: zooey Schiff <zzooey@...> To: zooey Schiff <zzooey@...> Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2022, 09:26:50 PM EDT Subject: Safely Storing Oars at Yankee Rowing Club Because YRC spacing is so tight, oars have to be stored all aligned with the same method. The racks were designed for slimmer Macon blades and the Hatchet blades being larger are too close.. If they are not store properly, they can catch the oars above or below, fall on you, pull off other oars, or hit the ground. Modern blades are expensive and delicate. Please treat them that way. Boat owners and most past members are aware of how to store the oars. Here is the YRC protocol for those who don't know: 1. Place oars face to face ( Convex to Convex surface ) not like spoons in which the concave surfaces rest inside each other. 2. Put the Pair of Blades on alternating sides, so only one pair of Blades is on the left or right. 3. The Top edge when rowing, IS the Top Edge in the rack; please don't put them Upside down. 4 Offset the Collars on the sleeves, so the Collars do not push the oars off the dowels. 5. Try to stay as far away from the boat hulls as possible when you re-rack, so you do not bang into the expensive shells around you. There are many ways to store oars, but this method has worked well for YRC. We expect to rebuild the racks for more vertical room and horizontal distance. In the meantime, if you see someone who doesn't know, or puts the oars away wrong, please tell them and show them the YRC way. Just one set of oars placed incorrectly can cause a cascade of falling oars. Thank You, Craig

Update from Andy Fisk on CT River fish 3
I was in touch with Andy on another matter this week and asked him about the fish in the river this year, specifically shad. Here is his reply: The shad run was not so great this year. It was only 190K this year, which is about 140K off the long term average. Last year wasn¡¯t so hot either, but that may have been due to wet weather, turbidity and cold temps so most of the shad stayed below Holyoke. The little silver fish we see are likely the juvenile shad getting ready to head out to the ocean in October. Christina Petersen Christina.petersen@... 413-563-7900

Exhibition Announcement 3
Fellow scullers, I wanted to share this exhibition announcement with all of you. The work I have in the show began with images from sculling on the river, and two large sculptural pieces were cast from the hull of an old retired single. Note that the show runs until the end of October (coinciding with the expected end of our rowing season!). I hope you can find time to head up to NH and see it--there are beautiful hiking trails around the St. Gaudens estate--it is a National Park. All the best, Nancy (orange VanDusen) One River, Many Views Nancy Diessner, Brenda Garand, and Janet Pritchard July 23 - October 30, 2022 Exhibition opening Saturday, July 23, 4:30 PM Picture Gallery, Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park 139 Saint-Gaudens Road, Cornish, NH 03745 Reception at the Farragut Monument followed by talks by two of the artists One River, Many Views features three artists exploring the theme of the Connecticut River and responding to its beauty, power, and history. These artists work in a variety of media, including photography, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, at times using the river water, its soil, and its flora in the creative process. Additionally, this exhibition presents reflections written by ten residents of the Upper Valley who live, work, and engage with the Connecticut River. They include creative writers, scholars, and residents, including those from the Abenaki, agricultural, recreational, and other communities for whom the river is an important part of their daily lives. Yankee Rowing -- Club Boat Care
Yankee Rowers who use club boats, We¡¯ve had some problems regarding some of the club boats and ask for your help in avoiding them: The seat screws on the Fluidesign single (the ¡°Andy Larkin,¡± the green mid-weight shell) came loose from the seat frame, making the seat unusable. (It¡¯s been repaired and should be ok now.) We think this may be due to rowers hitting the bumpers on the end of the tracks at either the catch or the finish. This can be avoided by adjusting the tracks before rowing so that you have sufficient room in your stroke so that you avoid hitting the bumpers. (The track position can be adjusted by loosening each of the two wingnuts under each track: there is one wingnut for each track that is accessible by opening the round deck hatch, and there is another wingnut for each track toward the stern end of the track, just under the deck. After adjusting the tracks, please be sure to re-tighten the wingnuts, so the tracks don¡¯t move. But don¡¯t tighten the wingnuts or the deck hatch too much--just make them ¡°finger-tight¡± so the tracks and hatch don¡¯t move. If you can¡¯t figure out how to adjust the tracks, please ask me or Craig, or another club member who has a Fluidesign shell.) The hulls on some of the club recreational boats (e.g., the Maas boats, or the Dreher RecRacer) have been getting scratched/ scraped up a bit, usually on the bow end of the hull. If you use wheels to transport one of these shells to and from the dock, please be extra careful when transporting the boat and when maneuvering it between the dock and the water in order to avoid the bow (or other parts of the hull) scraping the hardtop, the ramp, or the dock. If you need to put the bow down on the dock when getting it in or out of the water, please put a piece of foam or a cushion under the bow to avoid scraping it on the dock. If you have questions or need help regarding any of this, please let me know. Thanks very much, Ernie

To Those all those Who Use the Double Fluid Design
To all who use the Double Fluid Design: I have put on the name "Tom and May Carhart ~Yankee Rowing Club #1" on our Fluid Double. I left the bow cover unzipped and just strapped down just for today and have removed the hatch cover in this heat. For those who don't know our YRC procedure this is how we do it: 1-Take the double to the slings on the grass. 2-Undo the cover there and if wet allow to dry opened up on slings. 3-When finished with rowing, please wash the algae and duck-weed off the hull with the solution of soap and water from under the desk. (There are small cloths to the left of the towels and on the knee wall.) 4-Clean Out the Tracks; this leaves no grease or gunk for sand and dirt to ruin the tracks. (Small rags, left of the towels.) 5-You can throw the track rags away, and please don't use full towels for the tracks. This only makes a mess of a towel. 6-Put the cover on while the boat is on the slings over the grass. Try to avoid any dirt etc from getting in the cover. Better over grass than the asphalt which picks up too much grit. 7-In this hot weather, pull off the hatch cover and store it in one shoe. 8-Strap it down gently on the gunnels, the flat part of the stern and bow; firm, but not so much it will crack. It's not going anywhere. Thanks craig
