power on ft-920 problem

hi i have a problem on the ft-920 sometimes when i turn on the radio it is silent without sound then i turn off and on again and everything returns to normal where could be the problem

Hi have a ft 920 since Christmas and have only acquired my foundation license in the last few months wanted to have a look at using Wspr the radio is connected with usb-cat lead which works with n1m but on Wspr it picks up radio but won’t find anything for audio input so I just get an error is there another lead I need to connect for audio any help much appreciated.

Thanks for that recommendation.? I haven't had time to try out the software, but most of the commentary on the groups link provided seems to be about setting up the serial port configurations which I've spent lots of time fiddling with in other software.?

FT-920 CAT control issues

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone here has experience with programs being able to use CAT control of an FT-920?? I recently acquired one and want to use it for digital modes (among others) and while I can get it to transmit and receive properly (using a Signalink) I cannot get WSJTX or N1MM to talk with it.? I don't ever see the CAT icon on the display (flashing or otherwise) and the programs time out waiting for a response.? I've tried with a couple different usb to serial adapters with different chipsets (FTDI and Prolific) as well as different operating systems (linux and windows) but haven't been able to get anything to connect.? I have also reset the 920 a couple of different ways per the manual but that didn't seem to help either.

Any help troubleshooting is appreciated!

On the Amplifier I have two RCA connectors named PTT and ALC.

I have tried to connect the PTT of the Amplifier to the TX GND of the FT-920 and

The PTT of the Amplifier to the EXT ALC of the Radio.

Is it correct?

I do not know if I need to make any settings in the Radio menu.

When I go to TX in CW I see the radio goes in TX and RX continually during the CW transmissions.

Is it normal????

Please any help will be really appreciated

You asked for suggestions about getting acquainted with the 920.? As a former owner of the 920 and other Yaesu rigs, may I suggest that you read and re-read the owners manual for this gem.? ?You'll have more questions.? It'd be good to write 'em down.? ?

If you need a copy of the manual, let us know.? We'll get a copy to send your way.? There are on-line versions of the manual; just be careful in the site you go to for the download.

Antennas for the 920:? ?Since you will be doing all listening on the 920 until you get your ticket, put some thought into your options for a simple wire antenna.? You'll have dozens of questions re that.? If you need help, just ask.? There are hundreds of ideas on the web.? A simple dipole is a good starting point.? For temporary use in reception only, a simple stretch of wire will do.? The 920's manual has some ideas re antennas.? I assume you already know what frequencies to listen to, to find SSB voice signals.

There's probably a local radio club in your area, yes ??? ?The guys and gals there all have ideas for newbies.? ?Most are willing to provide help.? When the time comes to ask for help, ask the president of the club, and request an "Elmer".?

I am taking the test for the Tech ticket soon. I bought a 920 to listen to until legal. Do you have suggestions about first things first with the 920? Eric~

Transmitter audio distortion. Looking for troubleshooting tips.

I am helping an older friend who has had FT-920 transmitter distortion, and so we're looking for initial troubleshooting ideas from those who have experienced this trait in the past.? All suggestions will be welcome.? ?My friend, Kerry, is not on the www and not computer savvy, and so I'm the intermediary for the time being. We have no real test equipment.? My guess is, we'll end up sending the rig to someone, wherever, who can do a complete checkup, cleaning and repair.? But first, we'll see what we can come up with on our own.? Please see below.??

The owner is the original owner of the 920 in question.? His shack, unfortunately, is located in a humid and somewhat distasteful garage environment here in Florida.? Not a good place for anything electronic.? My concern is that, like some other brands of amateur equipment, the 920 has finally fallen victim to the initial stages of corrosion of the contacts, etc. Perhaps someone here has had experience in this regard.

Distortion is present in the audio during voice peaks, running barefoot.? Yes, we've examined closely the operating instructions regarding settings, et al.??

I may have discovered the problem.? When I finally got it on this afternoon, I left it on for 3 hours. When I came back, I turned it off, and could easily turn it back on and the VFO and display would lock on the first try. I suspect it does not like room temp being 60 degrees....in the basement, no heat down here...outside temp 57 for the day's high. Will pursue?my suggestions and also yours.? Thanks a bunch.? 73

Initially when the power switch was depressed the display would com on, and then flash on and off at approximately 1 second intervals. Usually (for several years) I could immediately turn off the power and reapply it and all would be well.? Now the last time I tried it, today it had been off for a couple months, and it took me 8 tries to get it to lock up.
