Problem powering on
Thanks for accepting me to the group. My FT-920 suddenly exhibited a problem upon applying power.? Initially when the power switch was depressed the display would com on, and then flash on and off at approximately 1 second intervals. Usually (for several years) I could immediately turn off the power and reapply it and all would be well.? Now the last time I tried it, today it had been off for a couple months, and it took me 8 tries to get it to lock up. I double checked the DC power supply, a 35 amp Pyramid and it is set at 13.8 V DC. Any suggestions as to what to look for?? I have never had "the hood" open on this transceiver.? Best of 73 and I await a reply ( or a dozen).??

Re: Problem powering on
Thanks, Derek, I may have discovered the problem.? When I finally got it on this afternoon, I left it on for 3 hours. When I came back, I turned it off, and could easily turn it back on and the VFO and display would lock on the first try. I suspect it does not like room temp being 60 degrees....in the basement, no heat down here...outside temp 57 for the day's high. Will pursue?my suggestions and also yours.? Thanks a bunch.? 73 Bernie in ND WD0GMD On Sun, May 23, 2021 at 6:50 PM Derrick Cox <gi4ohh@...> wrote:

Transmitter audio distortion. Looking for troubleshooting tips.
Mark W2OR
I am helping an older friend who has had FT-920 transmitter distortion, and so we're looking for initial troubleshooting ideas from those who have experienced this trait in the past.? All suggestions will be welcome.? ?My friend, Kerry, is not on the www and not computer savvy, and so I'm the intermediary for the time being. We have no real test equipment.? My guess is, we'll end up sending the rig to someone, wherever, who can do a complete checkup, cleaning and repair.? But first, we'll see what we can come up with on our own.? Please see below.??
The owner is the original owner of the 920 in question.? His shack, unfortunately, is located in a humid and somewhat distasteful garage environment here in Florida.? Not a good place for anything electronic.? My concern is that, like some other brands of amateur equipment, the 920 has finally fallen victim to the initial stages of corrosion of the contacts, etc. Perhaps someone here has had experience in this regard. Distortion is present in the audio during voice peaks, running barefoot.? Yes, we've examined closely the operating instructions regarding settings, et al.?? That's it for now.? And Thanks. |

Hello, Eric.? And congrats on acquiring a very fine rig - - the FT-920.? And more to the point, we wish you good luck in taking the Tech Exam and in getting your ticket.? Do let us know how it all goes for you.??
You asked for suggestions about getting acquainted with the 920.? As a former owner of the 920 and other Yaesu rigs, may I suggest that you read and re-read the owners manual for this gem.? ?You'll have more questions.? It'd be good to write 'em down.? ? If you need a copy of the manual, let us know.? We'll get a copy to send your way.? There are on-line versions of the manual; just be careful in the site you go to for the download. The manufacturer's web site, at Yaesu.com has some articles on the 920, found here: ?? Antennas for the 920:? ?Since you will be doing all listening on the 920 until you get your ticket, put some thought into your options for a simple wire antenna.? You'll have dozens of questions re that.? If you need help, just ask.? There are hundreds of ideas on the web.? A simple dipole is a good starting point.? For temporary use in reception only, a simple stretch of wire will do.? The 920's manual has some ideas re antennas.? I assume you already know what frequencies to listen to, to find SSB voice signals. There's probably a local radio club in your area, yes ??? ?The guys and gals there all have ideas for newbies.? ?Most are willing to provide help.? When the time comes to ask for help, ask the president of the club, and request an "Elmer".? OK.? That's it for now.? Others here on this thread will have better ideas than mine.? Let us know how it all goes.? ? ?73 de Mark? ?..w2or..? ? |
FT920 & RM BLA350 Amplifier
开云体育On the Amplifier I have two RCA connectors named PTT and ALC. I have tried to connect the PTT of the Amplifier to the TX GND of the FT-920 and The PTT of the Amplifier to the EXT ALC of the Radio. Is it correct? I do not know if I need to make any settings in the Radio menu. When I go to TX in CW I see the radio goes in TX and RX continually during the CW transmissions. Is it normal???? FT-920 CAT control issues
Hello all,
Wondering if anyone here has experience with programs being able to use CAT control of an FT-920?? I recently acquired one and want to use it for digital modes (among others) and while I can get it to transmit and receive properly (using a Signalink) I cannot get WSJTX or N1MM to talk with it.? I don't ever see the CAT icon on the display (flashing or otherwise) and the programs time out waiting for a response.? I've tried with a couple different usb to serial adapters with different chipsets (FTDI and Prolific) as well as different operating systems (linux and windows) but haven't been able to get anything to connect.? I have also reset the 920 a couple of different ways per the manual but that didn't seem to help either. Any help troubleshooting is appreciated! -Paul AE6MQ |

The old FT920 here had worked well with the?DXLabSuites set of applications, including their CAT app, labeled DXCommander (aka) Commander.? ? Pls see below comments.
? DXLab likewise has a 开云体育 list-serve where there are many qualified participants to lend you expert advice, as well as other advice that's not so expert.? Please see:??/g/DXLab/topics? .? That? Groups,io web page has a SEARCH function, and if you enter FT920 in the search field, you'll be pleased to see lots of Q&A commentary, some related to CAT control. That's about all the advice I can pass along to you, Paul.? Good luck.? //Mark? ? ..w2or.. |
Re: FT-920 CAT control issues
Thanks for that recommendation.? I haven't had time to try out the software, but most of the commentary on the groups link provided seems to be about setting up the serial port configurations which I've spent lots of time fiddling with in other software.? -Paul AE6MQ On Sat, Nov 13, 2021 at 2:29 AM Mark W2OR via <reston2010mm-orders=[email protected]> wrote: The old FT920 here had worked well with the?DXLabSuites set of applications, including their CAT app, labeled DXCommander (aka) Commander.? ? Re: power on ft-920 problem
Francesco, and the group -? I also have a strange action when I turn on my FT-920.? More times than not, the frequency display will just flash on and off. But I have also had it come on normally with no audio out. Upon doing a mid-level reset (losing all memories?stored) it will respond normally. However, I have used both the standard Yaesu mic and a Heil GM-5 and have gotten reports of distorted audio?with both, that comes and goes.? Any ideas for Francesco or me...please?? Thanks all...and thanks to the group controllers. Strange Behaviour
开云体育Hello Folks, I hope in an help. I am using the FT-920 with a KAM Kantronics TNC from a while for digital signals. Today I have noticed a strange behaviour, when the KAM goes in TX the radio Normally goes in TX but when it has finished TXing I see that the KAM going in RX but the radio Remains in TX until I do not or pull out the cable from the KAM, or pull out the cable from The FT-920 or just move a little bit the VFO. I have tried the to change the radio with a Kenwood TS-2000 and have noticed that I do not Get the problem. I have also noticed that if I put the RF GAIN to the minimum, the problem does not appear but As I try to increase the RF GAIN, even just a little bit. The problem appears. Please anybody can tell me what could it be and what to check. Thanks in advance for any help that will be really appreciated. ? ? 73 de Enzo IK8OZV ????? *?? GSM? +39 328 7110193? * ????? ???? Stupid Question
开云体育Hi All, Please apologize for the stupid question. I own a Yaesu FT-920 and an Amplifier RM BLA-350. On the back of the Amplifier I have two RCA connectors named ALC and PTT I would like know which are the correct connections between the Amplifier and the radio. I have connected the PTT from the Amplifier to the TX GND connector of the Radio and The ALC from the Amplifier to the EXT ALC connector of the Radio. Are these connections right or not? I ask this because I am noticing that when I TX in CW the Amplifier does not stay in TX continually But it goes ON and OFF following the CW note. I have tried the to move the PTT on the back of the radio from the TX GND connector to the PTT connector But nothing changed, So I put it back into the ?TX GND connector of the radio and now the Amplifier won’t go anymore In OPERATE mode. Please any help will be really appreciated. ? ? 73 de Enzo IK8OZV ????? *?? GSM? +39 328 7110193? * ????? ???? SMS? +39 328 7110193 ?? ????? *** ? |
