Andrew, thanks VERY MUCH for your replies. YAAC is a very cool piece of software!
I have a couple of follow-up questions, and I appreciate your time in the reply.
1. If digipeaters only *retransmit* the packets, then I don't necessarily need to be repeated for something like a position report to get through. I only need to be heard by an RX i-gate, correct? Digipeated packets only help to broaden the reach of my transmission so that others may hear?
2. So, the reason that my email is not getting through is probably because I am not being heard by an RX iGate that has email capability. But just to make sure I am doing It correctly in YAAC: At the bottom of the YAAC screen, I choose TO = EMAIL-2, VIA = WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1. And in the text field I put in "wd4elg@... Merry Christmas" with no additional colons or spaces. I want to make sure I am not mucking it up, using the software incorrectly. So if it is showing in FINDU then it should go through, right?
3. Why does YAAC transmit like a mind of it's own? What is it sending, if I have BEACON disabled and RF-->IS and IS--RF disabled? I restarted the program again today and right after trying to send an email, the program continued to transmit. (Maybe because smart-beaconing was still enabled?)
4. What is smart beaconing?
5. I did not realize that APRS was multi-cast. So it's like UDP protocol on the internet....maybe it gets through or maybe not. Except with APRS, we don't have these robust routers on the backbone...we have limited coverage and sometimes RX-only iGates.
